Lola—Introducing Anne E Stewart

Planning for Lola is now in the final stages and a program of events will soon be released. Anne E Stewart is now a part of the team and will be facilitating many of the sessions that will be held as a part of the event.

So who is Ann E Stewart?

Anne fell into storytelling in 1977, when she was working as the assistant children’s librarian at Geelong. It was her lot to drive the Jolly Jumbuck storytelling van to various sites around the area, gather the children and tell them a story. She discovered she was good at it.

Completing her Bachelor of Arts/Librarianship at Ballarat CAE (College of Advanced Education), Anne had the great fortune to be encouraged and mentored by Thelma Rungkat, Mem Fox, patron of the South Australian Storytelling Guild, and Dromkeen Medal recipient Patricia Scott.

The turning point in Anne’s career came with her first job as children’s librarian at Darwin Library. That period set her on a quest to find the stories of Australia. For more than 20 years, Anne has worked with indigenous storytellers and others to build her bank of tales about convicts, pastoralists, gold, immigration, local people and local places.

She has plumbed the resources of the Australiana Room at the Central Highlands Regional Library, she regularly tells stories in the Fine Art Gallery, is a producer for ABC Radio Ballarat and has completed several story projects through the ABC’s Regional Production Fund.

Anne has developed stories and programs for the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Museum of Australia and

has spoken at several conferences for the International Museums Theatre Alliance. At the fourth biennial IMTAL Conference in October, 2005, Anne was invited to tell her family’s story of its relationship with East Timor and the death at Balibo in 1975 of her eldest brother, Tony.

In the words of one newspaper reviewer, “with her bubbly, enthusiastic nature, telling stories for a living comes naturally to Anne Stewart. It may be an unusual occupation, but it’s one on which she thrives”.

Linton & District Men’s Shed Update

Yes we have…No we haven’t…maybe…yes we have…??

As I sit down to write this month’s newsletter, I am very conscious that my “good news” to our members and supporters is not yet confirmed. However, yesterday I had a telephone

conversation with our retiring local state MP – Geoff Howard. With great delight he indicated the government was now prepared to ask the CFA to grant a lease on the land behind the current Linton fire station to the Linton and District Men’s Shed. We have been battling with the decision makers in Melbourne for months now and have made contact with eight different MPs, had numerous telephone conversations, meetings and email exchanges. Someone has been on our side and it finally looks as though we have some land on which to build. Through all of this we have had fantastic support and encouragement from both Geoff Howard, Golden Plains Shire.

But our Shed still awaits final confirmation that land will be made available to us in time for to send in our grant application for our building programme. Applications must be in at the beginning of June and we have not yet received the magic piece of paper confirming the lease. I am told that will be arriving early in the week. Until then, hope is sustaining us!

Our current Shed:

As mentioned in our last newsletter, we have been informed that “come spring” the land and shed currently on loan to us will put on the market for sale. We are especially thankful for the generosity with which those assets have been made available to us. What it means is we are going to have to find a short-term alternative location for our shed. There will be an unavoidable time lag between the sale of the

present location and the completion of our new shed (if we get the land!). Once again, we find ourselves seeking some help from our local community in finding a temporary home. We welcome suggestions as to the availability of possible buildings and locations. If anyone has a such a place or knows of one that might be suitable, then please mention it to someone at the Shed (it is open Wednesday and Saturday) or give Bennita or myself a call – 5344 7544 - 0418 572 257. It’s Winter again

One of the major elements of Shed life is the encouragement for members to be aware of matters of both health and wellbeing. Over the last couple of years this has included the provision of a good, healthy lunch (lovingly cooked by Bennita) for members and visitors on the last Wednesday of each month during winter. On cold, wet, winter days, these meals are eagerly welcomed and Bennita ensures that the meals are all easy to cook, cheap to purchase and as healthy as any attractive meal can be (without chocolate). There is always plenty available and often enough for people to take home. This will start up again on the last Wednesday of June. Warning: If Bennita is not home from hospital I will be doing the cooking!

Membership fees:

A final request for members and those wanting to become members, that fees are due. Arrangements can be made for payment to be spread out over a number of months if that helps. This is a great way for people to support the work of the Shed even if you are not interested or ready to be a regular participant in activities. We also a number of ladies sign up as a way of encouraging their “others” and as a way of being involved in the important work the Shed does (phone: 0418572257 for more).

A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde is this month's reading. In the same vein as The Importance of Being Ernest the supposedly genteel and aristocratic are given the 'tongue in cheek' treatment by Wilde and taken not quite seriously.

Winter is taking it's usual toll on attendence, some evenings it's just too difficult to get everything done and venture out again. It's timely therefore to remind members to send an apology, if we don't have enough readers to cover all roles we have a night off.

your local GP can assist you.

The following article was published in the Ballarat Courier on

NOVEMBER 20 2011:

Tony Walker happy to be Linton

Community Cop

About 400 people live in Linton and almost all of them would

know Tony Walker. The town’s only police officer is in his

seventh year in the job and has no plans to go anywhere –

he’s happy to a stay a “community cop” for the rest of his

career.

Leading Senior Constable Walker spent the first eight years of

his working life on the city beat, spending time at Collingwood

and South Melbourne stations, before working in witness

security. In the aftermath of the horrific ambush of two police

constables in Walsh Street South Yarra in 1988, the then

Senior Constable Walker worked protecting the likes of

Wendy Peirce and Jason Ryan – the wife and nephew of chief

suspect Victor Peirce.

But it wasn’t until 1992 when he transferred to the tiny town

of Donald that he found his ideal career path.

“I was in Melbourne for eight years, but it just wasn’t the type

of policing for me,” he said.“I did enjoy being anonymous, but

it was too impersonal.”

While at Donald, Tony attended a tragic accident which drove

home the realities of country policing.

“Just after I got up there I had my first fatal accident that I did

by myself,” he said. “A young bloke who had a fit (while

driving) and went straight into a tree...the old sergeant up

there was retiring within a month, so I copped it.”

The crash had an impact, but the desire for small town

policing remained and Tony’s next move was to Minyip,

where he stayed for more than six years.

“When I left Minyip I counted I was on about 13 committees,”

he said. “I was on the school council, involved with the golf

club, the bowls clubs, the swimming pool and the progress

committee.”

“That’s the thing about community policing – you just get

really involved.”

Eventually a move was made from Minyip to another one-

man station, Linton, where Tony now umpires the local footy,

is tournament secretary of the bowls club and gets involved

with the local school.

In the event of an emergency such as a flood or fire, he

becomes the Municipal Emergency Response Co-ordinator for

the northern part of the Golden Plains shire and has also

notched up 26 years as a CFA volunteer. With no plans for

promotion or transfer, Tony’s not going to leave Linton in a

hurry.

“Why would I leave? I can walk the dog along the rail trail and

not see another person for hours,” he said. “I love it here.”

While the community work appeals to Tony, there’s still

enough police work to keep him busy. A recent raid on a

home growing cannabis using a hydroponics set up proved

small towns still have their secrets.

“That’s a reason why some people do come to the bush,

because they think they’re not going to be seen,” he said.“It’s

not as busy as some of the bigger stations, but I wouldn’t go

back to the city – not now.”

When The Courier spoke with Tony in Linton recently, people

sitting at a cafe heckled him for posing for a photo, passers-by

said hello and drivers gave a friendly wave. He said he gets to

know everyone so they speak to him about the goings-on in

his “patch”, but it’s far more likely he’s just a friendly bloke.

It’s often said the local police officer, in Tony’s words, “holds a

town together”, and that’s precisely what’s happening down

SPORT CARNGHAM LINTON FOOTBALL

The Carngham Linton Football Netball Club has enjoyed a number of very competitive matches during May. Following their win against Clunes in Round 3 and a bye against Smythesdale in Round 4, the senior footballers were defeated by Learmonth and Newlyn in Rounds 5 & 6. However, with Learmonth and Newlyn currently sitting second and third on the ladder respectively, the Saints have produced much more competitive scores against the stronger sides in the competition this year. The reserves footballers have also been much more competitive in 2018, recording three wins in their first six matches. Under the coaching of Tom Sarah, the reserves only sit outside the top eight on percentage and can look forward to a number of competitive matches ahead. The senior netballers registered their second win of the season in Round 6 at Newlyn with a solid win against the Cats, while the B grade team has made a good start to the year and sits sixth on the ladder with three wins. The Under-13 netball team has been Carngham Linton’s strongest performing side, being undefeated after the first six rounds and sitting second on the ladder behind Buninyong on percentage. At the time of writing, Carngham Linton was heading in to its last match of the year at Linton against Daylesford. The Linton football ground and repaired netball court have been excellent surfaces to play on this year, and we look forward to returning to a further upgraded Linton facility in 2019. Congratulations to our senior football coach Matthew Beaston, who was selected as an assistant coach for the Central Highlands Football League inter-league side which played the Riddell District Football League at Buninyong on

May 19th. Carngham Linton’s Beau Ketchen and Luke Parker were also selected in the CHFL senior squad. Congratulations to Dean O’Brien, Brodie Lewis, Brody Benson, Kobe Burns, Hudson Palmer and Riley Deeker-Fradd for their selections in the various CHFL junior football

squads. Congratulations also to Alex Forty for her selection in the Central Highlands Netball League Under-17 team. Carngham Linton will play its first home match at Snake Valley against Gordon on Saturday June 16th, when we will be holding a Past Player’s Day with a finger-food lunch at 1.00pm. Commemorative football jumpers featuring the names of players from the 1978 Reserves, 1998 Senior and 2008 Senior, Reserves & Under-12 premierships sides will be available for purchase or order on the day. Tea will also be available after the day’s play for those who wish to stay on. The club will later be celebrating the 50th year of the Carngham and Linton merger in the final round against

Skipton on August 11th, with various commemorations on the day, followed by a dinner at the Bray Raceway formal dining room in Ballarat.
