LANGUAGEARTSACTIVITIES• Writers have always

used animals asmetaphors to tellhuman stories andexpress humanemotions. As a class, create a list of favoriteanimal stories and discussthe main characters andhow they reflect humanqualities. Students can writeand illustrate their own animalstories.

• In THE LION KING, Simba mustdiscover who he is before he cantake his place in the Circle of Life. For a fun character developmentactivity, have students “audition”for a role in the show bydescribing who they are and whythey think they “fit” thatcharacter. Have them describeinfluential moments fromtheir own life thatmade them that wayand the changes theysee in their future.

• Simba’s father says to him,“Mamela,” which meanslisten. When people listen toone another and respectwhat the other person has tosay, they make a connection.Have students form alistening circle and create astory together, one wordat a time. Going aroundthe circle, each studentcontinues the story bysaying only one word. Then have them try it

one sentence at a time.

SCIENCEACTIVITIES

• A key theme ofTHE LION KING isthat everymember of theCircle of Life isinterdependent.Have studentsbrainstorm wayspeople todayhave broken theCircle of Life

around the worldand work in teams

to put together ideason how students can

help fix it.• In THE LION KING, the

land becomes dry and manyanimals are forced to leave. Have

students research the water cycleand draw conclusions as to howinterruptions in this “circle of life”can affect everyone.

influences from around the world, including Balinese puppetry

and African music and mask-making.

SOCIAL STUDIESACTIVITIES• THE LION KING takes place in the

African savanna. Have studentsresearch the plants, animals, andclimates of this region, and thenwork in teams to create dioramas for display.

• The elephants’ graveyard seen inTHE LION KING is a mythical spotwhere elephants go to die whenthey reach old age. In many placestoday, however, elephants are anendangered species. Have studentsfind out how organizations like theSheldrick Wildlife Trust are workingto protect Africa’s wilderness andits animals, then challenge them toput together a plan for their schoolor community to help.

• Have students createa map ofsouthern Africa, including a keyto thetopography. Theymight includetemperature, climate, plantlife, and annual rainfall.

VISUAL ARTSACTIVITIES• Ask students to select an African

animal and list emotions thatanimal might convey. That’s whatJulie Taymor, THE LION KING'sTony Award®-winning director andcostume designer, did. Studentsshould consider how the animal’sface moves and how thatmovement reflects emotions. Thenhave students create a mask thatwould help portray thoseemotions. As an extension, students can research the art ofAfrican masks.

• Many of the large characters in THE LION KING—giraffes, elephants, rhinos—do not speak.Have students select one of thesecharacters and give it a voice and anattitude. What does the creaturesound like? How does it walk? What character traits can it portray?Have students demonstrate theircharacter and ask other students todetermine what is being conveyedby the animal and actor.

• Havestudents

become setdesigners like

THE LION KING’sRichard Hudson and create the

physical world of THE LION KING.Ask students to select a setting andbrainstorm what their versionmight look like. Have studentscreate a diorama of their ideas.

MUSIC AND DANCEACTIVITIES• In musical theatre, songs move

the story forward and tell usabout the characters. Askstudents to select a song fromTHE LION KING and identifymessages and emotions that thesong evokes.

• Garth Fagan, choreographer ofTHE LION KING, wanted tocreate a “movement language” to tell the story, just as the wordsand music do. Ask students to

create a movement language thatevokes the feelings and ideasbehind one of these phrases: “It means no worries for the restof your days!,” “I laugh in theface of danger,” “I just can’t waitto be king!”

• What comes first, the lyrics or themusic? In this activity, play a songfor the class and then ask studentsto write a new set of lyrics.
