Liquefied Petroleum Gas
LP Gas is a general term for a family ofliquefied gases, which includes propane, and
butane in their liquid forms.

LPG Safety
Property Implication
Heavier than Air (1.5 times) Can Settle in Low lying Areas
Colourless Very Small Leakages may not be visible
OdourlessAdditives (Ethyl mercaptan) dosing required for
detecting its leakage
LPG expands upon release
and 1 litre of liquid will
form approximately 250
litres of vapour.
Small leakage of liquid LPG can form a big volume of
flammable mixture
Air in LPG system can
produce flammable mixture
immediately on leakage
Efforts to be made to avoid presence of Air in LPG
system
Flammability range 1.8% to
9.5%
Low flammability range calls for avoiding and detecting
leakages at very early stages
Icing during vaporization Valve operation may be difficult & leakage will continue
Dangerous features of LPG and its implications
LPG Safety
LPG TT Road Accident at Chala, Kannur, Kerela
LPG Bullet Truck hit a road divider on 27th Aug and toppled.
Leakage of LPG started and subsequent fire from an
unknown ignition source and BLEVE took place.
20 fatalities, 21 injuries
Around 20 nearby houses / shops were damaged.
Cause:
• Over speed in spite of poor road and weather condition.
• Poor lighting at the main junctions on the highway.
• Due to driving restrictions imposed within Kerala State, the
TT drivers are compelled to drive continuously in the night
hours.
Compensation paid: Rs 2.7 Cr

Safety Relief Valve:
• ensures the release of pressure in excess of set pressure.
• Min 2 no.s sized to suit full relieving capacity of the vessel.• To be replaced every ten years or earlier if found defective.• To be tested once in a year by PESO approved party
Excess Flow Check Valve:
• valve shuts off if the flow exceeds the set limit

Transportation of LPG in cylinders
Any vehicle used to transport LPGcylinders should:
Be suitable for the task, of adequatestrength and in good condition.
Be open (preferred) or have adequateventilation.
Store cylinders in an upright positionaway from direct sunlight and ignitionsources
Cylinder valves should be adequately plugged for transportation.
Provide fire protection equipment appropriate to storage
To avoid confusion, store full and empty cylinders separately
Never store a LPG cylinder upside down

Transportation of LPG in cylinders
Unload cylinders as soon as you reach your destination.
Use lift trucks or hoists only with proper lifting equipment.
Never use a sling or electromagnet to hoist a cylinder
Never lift a cylinder by the valve cap.
Never roll a cylinder on its side
Store petrol, flammable liquids or aerosols away from cylinders

LPG Safety
Cylinder Storage Area
Dry, well ventilated, protected from weather
Away from combustibles, heat sources, electrical systems
 No sparks, smoking, open flames
 Oxygen separated from fuels
