Inside this issue:

The word leader-ship often gets bantered about. For Lead-ership Prince George’s, (LPG) the question of What Is Leader-ship has become a central one as the organization

grows and expands its programs, activities and initiatives.

In the early stages, the organization’s primary focus was its ten-month leadership development training for professionals. Programmatically, the focus of LPG has expanded to a full fledged not-for-profit organization that provides not only training but also activities and initiatives centered on personal and professional growth, community outreach, network-ing and, most recently, enrichment for high school and college students, and young professionals.

Operationally, the organization has grown from a board of less than ten to one that has 23 mem-bers, eleven active committees, and multiple ac-tivities each month. I am constantly amazed by the growth, which has occurred with few if any paid staff and which functions on a small budget that is bolstered by bartering and incredible part-ners who, time and time again, support the vision and mission of the organization.

What does this all mean? For me, it is an affirma-tion that community trusteeship is alive and well. It is also a reminder that, individually and collectively, we must continue to affect positive change.

Leadership Prince George’s plays an invaluable role in bringing together stakeholders who are committed to the community and who see the wonderful promise of Prince George’s County and the region. For sure, the BEST IS YET TO COME. STAY TUNED. Marva Jo Camp

Letter from the LPG Chairman

On June 11, 2014, the annual graduation dinner was held at The Sunset Room at National Harbor to rec-ognize Class XXVIII candidates for completing the 2013-2014 ten-month Signature Leadership Program. During the program year, class members received leadership training, discussed current issues, and partic-ipated in activities designed to enhance their understanding of Prince George’s County and the Region. They gained access to valuable networking opportunities with both public and private stakeholders. There were well over 120 individuals in attendance from all sectors – Federal and local government, public and private industries, and nonprofit organizations within Prince George’s County and the surrounding Washington, DC region. Attendees had the opportunity to network and mingle during the reception.

Class XXVIII candidates received their Certificates of Completion from Marva Jo Camp, LPG Chair, and their respective mentor. They were given the LPG oath by Dr. William Welch, Founder of Leadership Prince George’s. Class XXVIII candidates Kelly Vaughn, Korey Neal, and Darin Conforti were nominated by their fellow classmates to present class reflections of the past program year. Each speaker delivered a dynamic message and presented from the heart what LPG meant to them. In addition, Marva Jo presented Manuel (Class XXVI) and Wanda Arrington (Class XXVII) with the Chairman’s Award for their outstanding service and commitment to LPG and the community this past program year. development training and team building exer-cises. A highlight of the retreat occurred during team presentations. One team even inspired as many as 20 participants from other teams to

join in.

The retreat closed with a very inspiring and

symbolic ceremony by Dr. Welch. The class

members had successfully completed the 10

month training program. The class consensus

was they had learned about the history, re-

sources, infrastructure, challenges and oppor-

tunities in Prince George’s County. They had

gained greater insight into Prince George’s

County. They had developed professional net-

works and friendships that would be invaluable

in making the county a preferred location for

raising your family or locating your business.

They were better prepared to assume leader-

ship roles and mentor future leaders.

The Leadership Prince George’s closing re-treat was held from June 4th through June 6th at the picturesque Hyatt Regency Chesa-peake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina in Cambridge, Maryland.

There were 24 members from the Class of XXVIII and 2 members from the Class of XVII that participated in the closing retreat.

CHRISTMAS IN APRIL

The Christmas in April program has been helping disabled and elderly homeowners, and families with children in Prince George’s County since 1989. In April of 2014, Leadership Prince George’s, Inc. once again partnered with Sheriff Melvin C. High and the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office to breathe new life into an estab-lished home on Forest Terrace in the Landover area of Prince George’s County.

The disabled homeowner whose home was re-paired currently serves as a school volunteer in DC but his home had fallen into disrepair, includ-ing being without hot water for more than six months. Volunteers from the Sheriff’s Office and licensed professionals worked for weeks on the residence replacing the hot water heater, stove, refrigerator and microwave, and making improve-ments and repairs to electrical systems, plumbing and the roof. PUBLIC SAFETY cont. from page 3:

The helicopter pilot demonstration and the situational judgment training exer-cise helped every participant gain valuable new perspective of the complexities and interworkings of Public Safety in Prince George’s County.

EDUCATION cont. from page 3: Dr. Gary Bredfeldt, Dr. Jacqueline L. Brown, Dr. Mickey L. Burnim, Dr. Marie Cini, Dr. Charlene M. Dukes, Dr. Sandra Dunnington, Dr. Tyjaun A. Lee, Dr. Bernard Sadusky, Dr. Yvette Snowden, Daryl Williams, Dr. Donna Wiseman, and Dr. Michael Wood.

CHRISTMAS IN APRIL cont. from page 3:

Leadership Prince Georges’ volunteers painted, installed a screen door, raked leaves, and mulched. After spending the day making improvements and fellow-shipping with all of the other workers, there was great pride taken in what had been accomplished. Even the neighbors took note of the excellent work and camaraderie of all of the volunteers. Leadership is demonstrated in many ways—giving of yourself to improve another’s situation is the most rewarding.
