Afterword

In 1997, when Mr. Ren Shinan was the director, Institute ofArchaeology of CASS entrusted Dr. Wang Tao, who was areader in Chinese Archaeology and Cultural Heritage,Institute of Archaeology, University College London, to getthe photocopy of PhD dissertation of Xianai (typed draft, inEnglish) from library of UCL. At that time, we planned totranslate this dissertation into Chinese and publish it togetherwith the English version. Later, due to the personnel changedof London Press, and the difficulty in translation, the publi-cation plan was delayed. In 1995, in order to edit CollectedWorks of Xianai, Wang Shimin, researcher of Institute ofArchaeology of CASS, invited Yan Haiying of HistoryDepartment of Peking University to translate Chapter 1 ofPart 1 of the dissertation—Archaeology Value of AncientEgyptian Beads—and added it into the Collected Works. In

consideration of the difficulty in translating the whole dis-sertation into Chinese, and the English version is sufficientenough for the readers of specialists in Egyptology, wedecided to find a way to publish the English version aloneand gave up the plan of publishing the Chinese version. Inrecent years, with the support of present director of Instituteof Archaeology of CASS, Dr. Wang Wei, researcher WangShimin organized the further editing of Xianai’s works andinvited Prof. Yan Haiying to do the complete editing andreview of Xianai’s dissertation, three of her PhD studentscontributed in the work of retyping the whole dissertationinto computer: Wang Huan, Daixin and Huang Qingjiao.Miss Gongwen from Institute of Archaeology of CASS andyoungest son of Xianai—Xia Zhengyan—also contributed inthe related work.
