Listening & Communicati

ng

• To develop a climate of support, friendship and co-operation in the classroom

• To establish ground rules for discussion

• To explore the skills of communication and understand its importance in healthy relationships

PSHE Basics....• Each of you will be given a PSHE folder

•As PSHE is partly about respecting differences we’d like you to cover your folder before next lesson with photographs, images, text etc that will tell the rest of the class something about you

•A lot of the work that we will do in PSHE will be discussion but you will sometimes do small amounts of written work

• As this is our only record of the work that we do it is very important that these files are maintained and that any written work is put into them at the end of each lesson

Task:•Choose a partner and find out one way that person likes to spend their spare time. Find out as much about this leisure activity as you can

•In turns, we are going to talk for about 20 seconds about what our partner told us....but what will we need to do in order for this to work and for everyone to feel that they are valued?

•LISTEN

•Think about what similarities we have with each other in what we do and how we feel about our leisure activities

Task:•In 3-4s you will be given a card sort which includes many of the topics which may be covered in PSHE

•Rank them in order of how comfortable you would feel talking about them in a large group

•Which things are we less comfortable talking about?

•Why do you think this is?

•Does it depend upon the listener?

•It’s important to realise that having the support of a willing listener can be a great help when we are worried – ‘a trouble shared is a trouble halved’

•Can anyone give an example of this?

Task :•What do we need from others in order to feel we can trust them?

•It is clear that we all have similar needs and feelings

• If we want other people to trust us, we must behave in certain ways

•We would like others to reciprocate so that we can trust them too

•In groups of 5-6, decide together on guidelines for trust within the group. Write these on your posters ....we will be using these rules all year so make sure you all agree on them

Sensitive issues•The issues discussed in PSHE can be sensitive, therefore it is important that we respect other people’s views, even if we don’t agree with them and that we don’t ridicule people during discussion or gossip about class discussion outside the lesson

•Therefore, we should all observe a number of Basic Classroom Rights

BASIC CLASSROOM RIGHTS Teachers have the right to teachStudents have the right to learn

Everybody has the right to safetyEverybody has the right to dignity

Everybody has the responsibility to ensure that we can all enjoy our rights

How can you show people they matter?•The emphasis of many of your PSHE lessons will be group discussion

•We are more likely to take the risk of talking about ourselves if we feel that people appear to understand us and are listening

•We also have to let other people know that we understand them and that we are listening

•On the template on your sheet, add labels (and pictures) that say how you can show people that you are listening, that you understand and that you care about them and what they are talking about

•See the examples on the next slide

DO maintain eye contact

when someone is

talking to you

DON’T fidget

Task :•Before you go we are going to watch a short

clip about a conversation, which goes badly wrong, between the last Prime Minister and a student on work experience

•On your sheet, tick off anything you notice that is wrong with this conversation (according to the rules of good listening that we have come up with today)

•Put your sheet in your folder, before taking it home to cover
