Since 1958, Baker music students have had all of the advantages an intimate small-college environment affords plus the performance opportunities of much larger schools. Baker music ensembles enjoy major international concert tours every three years. This ability to offer students a wide range of musical experiences makes Baker’s music program truly unique.

Baker is regarded as the top private college in Kansas. Located in Baldwin City in northeast Kansas, Baker was the first university in the state. It is ranked in the top 50 schools for economic value by The Economist, which is a testament to our excellent return on investment for students. Baker grads go on to earn the highest average salaries in the state compared to other Kansas grads, and Baker University is the highest-ranked private Kansas university by the U.S. News & World Report.

In addition to being an excellent experience, a Baker education is a great value. More than ninety-two percent of Baker students receive significant financial aid in the form of academic and participation scholarships, grants, and loans. All of these combine to make a Baker education affordable!

The National Association of Schools of Music accredits the music department’s Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Music Education degree programs. The Bachelor of Arts degree emphasizes the study of music in a liberal arts context. This program of study is designed for students who want to double major or plan to pursue a career in musicology, composition, arts management, or the music

business. Students may choose to focus in performance, music composition, jazz studies, history & literature or interdisciplinary music theatre performance. The Bachelor of Music Education program leads to preK-12 licensure in instrumental, vocal, or general music. Closely aligned with the Baker University liberal arts philosophy, the BME program prepares exceptional music teachers who are able to involve critical inquiry and interdisciplinary relationships in successful music teaching. Baker also offers a minor in music

for students who wish to take courses in music theory and music history, study in applied

lessons, and participate in ensembles.

The Baker Music Department offers many performance

opportunities in ensembles for students to continue their musical pursuits after high school. All ensembles are open to music majors and nonmusic majors. Baker offers Symphonic Winds, Jazz Band, Wildcat Pride Athletic

Band, Wildcat Pride Drum Line, Orchestra, Concert Choir,

Chamber Singers, Dixieland Band, Percussion Ensemble, Woodwind

Quintet, Brass Ensemble and various other chamber ensembles.

The Baker University bands enjoy a rich history and tradition of excellence. In addition to the Baker Marching Band Festival, our band faculty host a jazz festival every November, a high school honor band in February, a prefestival clinic for bands and a trombone workshop. Our Jazz Band has performed with many world-renown artists such as jazz trombonist Harry Watters and jazz legend and Baker alumnus Kevin Mahogany!

Music scholarships are available and offered to music majors and nonmusic majors for their participation in Baker University music ensembles and activities. Music scholarships are based

on musical ability and potential shown through audition.

Dr. Derrick Crow holds a PhD in Education with a concentration in arts integration and curricular theory. He also holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Eastern Illinois University and a Master of Music from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. His research interests include music medicine, aesthetic education, and arts integration. Through research and pragmatic experiences, he is striving to create educational growth that encourages creative and intellectual exploration. He has had the privilege to work as a music educator at the primary, secondary, and collegiate levels. Dr. Crow has worked as a student teacher supervisor for the Master of Arts in Teaching Program and as an adjunct lecturer at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He practices his skills as an educator and musician by teaching young musicians in Danville School District 118.

TODAY’S JUDGES 18th ANNUAL BAKER UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND FESTIVAL

Gary McCarty has a great love for band music. Having grown up playing in school and college bands, and drum and bugle corps in Illinois, Mr. McCarty attended the University of Kansas and Emporia State University, where he studied music education and percussion. McCarty taught band in public schools in Kansas and Missouri for 31 years. He has served on the state board of the Kansas Music Educators’ Association twice while serving as president of the KMEA North Central and Southeast districts, taught at the Midwestern Music Camp in Lawrence, and is an active adjudicator, consultant, and clinician. Having retired from teaching in 2008, Mr. McCarty worked as the Music Education Representative for Flint Hills Music of Emporia until 2014.

He is now proprietor of McCarty Band Services, where he designs visual programs for Marching Band as well as acting as a clinician and consultant for school band programs. One of McCarty’s great loves is his involvement in city bands. He got started playing in the band in his hometown of Jacksonville, Illinois, organized and directed the Satanta (Kansas) Band, performed in the Hiawatha (Kansas) City Jazz Band, and played in the famed Lawrence City Band, where he was a member on and off for 42 years. Having retired after 23 years as the conductor for the Emporia Municipal Band, McCarty is happy to now be a part of the Bella Vista Community Concert Band.

Eric Stambaugh, director of Buhler High School bands, is in his 17th year of teaching and 13th year directing Buhler Bands. His job duties include Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and fifth-grade bands at Buhler and Plum Creek elementary schools. Under his direction, Buhler Bands have received numerous awards and state recognition. In 2006 and 2009, the Buhler Wind Ensemble was chosen to perform at the State KMEA Convention. In the marching forum, the Buhler Marching Band has won numerous 4A Class titles, drum line/colorguard, and Grand Champion awards at KU Heart of America, Neewollah, UCM, KBA, and Valley Center Marching Competition.

Mr. Stambaugh is a graduate of Kansas State University where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education and wind conducting. He began his teaching at Liberal High School, where he was the director of bands for three years. Prior to his arrival at Liberal, he was an assistant band director for the Salina Public Schools, teaching fifth – 12th grade instrumental. His professional memberships include Kansas Bandmasters Association, Kansas Music Educators Association, and NAfME. He lives in Hutchinson with his wife, Amanda, and his 12-year-old son, Ethan, and his 10-year-old daughter, Haven.

The Perry-Lecompton Marching Kaws are one of the most visible anddiverse student groups at PLHS. Its members are highly involved inother school activities, including football, volleyball, cross country,student council, and the fall musical. The Marching Kaws perform atfootball games, pep assemblies, parades, and other events acrossNortheast Kansas and the Midwest. This year, the PLHS band will expand its range by performing in Chicago with the PLHS choirover spring break.The Marching Kaws will perform their show, 2016: A SpaceOdyssey. The show opens with Strauss’s “Also Sprach Zarathustra,”better known as the title theme for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SpaceOdyssey. They will then perform one of the most famous love themesof all time, “Leia’s Theme” from George Lucas’s Star Wars. Next, theKaws will phone home as they perform the theme from StevenSpielburg’s E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Finally, the show will conclude with a thrilling arrangement of “Jupiter,” from Gustav Holst’s orchestral masterpiece, The Planets. We hope you enjoy 2016: A Space Odyssey!

Last year, the band received its second consecutive I rating at BakerUniversity and a I rating for the drum line. The band also traveled to SanAntonio to march at the Alamo Bowl. The concert band received itssecond-consecutive I rating at State large group and plans to travel again next year.

The Baker University dance team is a competitive squad that performs at home football and basketball contests. The Baker dance team competes at NAIA events locally, regionally, and nationally, as well as the NDA College Nationals in Daytona, Florida. The Louisburg High School Marching Wildcat Band performs at local,regional, and national events. The band has marched in Dallas, Washington, DC, Indianapolis, and New York City. The band earned first division ratings at the 2015 Baker University Marching Festival, the 2015 Central States Marching Festival, and the 2016 Kansas State High School Activities Association State Music Festival. Band members comprise more than one-fourth of the entire LHS student body. Mr Cisetti has led the LHS band for the last 38 years.

THE WILDCAT PRIDE DRUM LINE works both on its own and in conjunction with the pep band to perform at home sporting events and other Baker activities. Focusing on rudimentary traditions as well as contemporary percussion and movement techniques, the drum line aims to bring an air of excitement wherever its seen and heard. The drum line is open to all who can read music and carry a drum, with instructor permission.

BAKER UNIVERSITY DRUM LINE

In memory of Baker University graduate Jeremy Frye who succumbed to a brain tumor in 2008, his family and friends began the Music 4 Jeremy’s Cherubs Foundation. Since its inception, M4JC has collected and reconditioned over 500 musical instruments and provided scholarships to music students and future music educators. Benefit concerts were held in 2009 and 2010 featuring the Mason Brothers, Bobby Watson, JCCC “Midnight Express,” Shawnee Mission South Jazz Band, BAC Horn Dr. Combo, and other professional jazz musicians. Following the organization’s theme, “Putting music in the hands of children and a lifetime of love in their hearts,” M4JC’s work has benefited students in need throughout the metropolitan area and beyond. Tonight’s band with the highest score will be awarded the Jeremy Frye Memorial Championship Trophy in his honor. Thank you to Meyer Music for sponsoring the Jeremy Frye Grand Champion Trophy!
