Preparing Materials

Select interest inventory appropriate for age level of the child.Collect a range of texts for determining instructional level of the reader. Bring supplies that are potentially necessary

Initial SessionExchange contact information with parent(s).Establish pick-up/drop-off routine.Dismiss parent to begin session.Burke Reading Interview.Interest InventorySample readings (to determine instructional level)Writing Sample (if time allows for it)

Priorities when selecting materials are: instructional level of the reader, interest of the reader, and purpose of the lesson.

Text Selection Appropriate text selection goes beyond level.

Be familiar with the words and type of text.

Seek text that will assist in addressing goals.

Provide choices to engaged children in text selection.
