Frequently Asked Questions Q. Does your program work for children with dyslexia? A.YES! In fact, we have had children with dyslexia who came from standard programs with limited success, but have seen the most growth using our program. Q. Do you work with children with autism or other developmental challenges? A. Yes, we have a wealth of experience with the wide array of needs that a child on the autism spectrum may have and we are eager to support them. Q. Do your assessments provide a diagnosis? A. At this time, our assessments are not used to provide a specific diagnosis, such as dyslexia. They are designed to evaluate which strategies, whether beneficial or maladap-tive, your child is currently using in order to make an effective intervention plan for your child. A specific diagnosis will not change how we work with your child, because we always work around each child’s individual needs. Q. What if there is something more going on with my child that needs to be addressed? A.If that is the case, you are at the perfect place. Our therapists are trained to recognize red flags for a number of childhood developmental disabilities. At the initial parent training, they will make recommendations for other services based on your concerns, the school’s concerns, and their observations during the evaluation. If they become aware of concerns that need to be addressed throughout their time working with your child, they will discuss these with you. Q. Will tutors help my child with his/her homework? A.No, this is not the goal of reading and writing tutoring. We are working on long-term lasting change, and homework assignments usually do not support this goal. Q. Who will be providing the services? A. Our certified developmental speech-language pathologist/reading and writing spe-cialists do the assessments, run groups, train parents, monitor individual tutoring pro-gress, and touch base with you periodically. Our tutors carry out the intervention plan during individual tutoring sessions. They are trained in meaning-based methods, receive training specific to your child, and are supported throughout the process by a certified. developmental speech-language pathologist with extensive training in reading and writing development. Q. How do I get started? A. If you are a current client, discuss your interest with your child’s therapist and they will help you get started. If you are new to our center, call the front office at 337-504-4244 and tell them you are interested in our reading/writing program. They will have a therapist return your call to discuss your concerns and help you with the next steps.
