Alliteration

• The repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of a word in a sentence• Alliteration is commonly used in poetry and song lyrics

• Example: Sarah sells sea shells at the sea shore

Personification

• Giving human characteristics to inanimate Objects• Can also be used for abstract ideas

• Example: Lightning danced across the sky

Flashback

• A scene set earlier than the main story• Most commonly used in movies orNovels

• Example: Back in the day when Julia was young…

Irony

• When the reader expects something to happenAnd the opposite occurs• Mostly used for humor

• Example: A man who is a traffic cop gets his license suspended for unpaid parking tickets

Hyperbole

• Exaggeration that is not meant to be takenliterally • Can also be used as a rhetorical device• From Greek word meaning “excess”

• Example: I'm so hungry I could eat a horse

Metaphor

• A comparison of two or more things NOT using “like” or “as”

• Example: The snow is a white blanket

Simile

• A comparison of two or more things USING“like” or “as”

• Example: As cold as ice

Onomatopoeia

• A word the has a sound associated with it• Creates a sound or imagery

• Example: Buzz, Splash, Bang, Wack
