PRINCIPAL Congratulations to the outstanding leadership team of Lithgow High School. The outgoing leaders have been an absolute credit to the school and I wish them well for their studies over the next few months. On behalf of the staff of Lithgow High School I thank them for their efforts. I welcome our new leadership team who are a most impressive group of young women and men. I know that they will be outstanding representatives of our fine school. Their calibre is clearly indicated in the

profiles they have created below to introduce themselves to the school community. All these students are a powerful indicator of the quality of our young people in 2016, and all have great potential for the future. Well done to all. Year 12 has completed the first session of the Trial HSC this week, and I’m sure that this is a relief to them and their families. A reminder to all Year 12 students, parents and caregivers that we are highly sympathetic to students who suffer an illness or misadventure during assessment and exam tasks however we must follow Board of Studies Procedures. Any absence from an exam or failure to submit a task must be followed up immediately with a Medical Certificate a parent note is insufficient evidence at this stage of school. Please phone Mr Quirk with any issues in regard to Year 12. On behalf of the Lithgow High School I welcome the students and Teachers from Kitra Senri High School for their sixth visit to the Lithgow Valley. A huge thanks to the staff who have organised an action packed 10 days and to the parents who are hosting the students. I’m sure it will be a great visit for all involved. 2016 marked the 50th Anniversary of the Festival of Speech. When you think about it, that’s a huge achievement. Schools have been gathering at Lithgow High to debate ideas since even before I was born (as hard as that may be for some students to believe). For half a century, year after year, this tradition has been carried on through Principals, English Head Teachers and English Teachers, an academic Olympic Torch passed down through generations. What is so important about speech then? How is it that this tradition has carried on so strongly, through 50 years of changing culture, people and ideas? Ideas. That’s the key. It is through speech that we can most easily convey our ideas to other people. It is through speech that we can most easily convince other people, persuade them to our point of view. The written word is powerful, yes, and easy to disseminate, but nothing quite fires up the blood like a rousing speech. The power of inspiring words combined beautifully with that broken note a passion in the human voice. The set of a strong speaker’s shoulders with the hands expressively gesturing to the hearts of the audience. The leaders of tomorrow are the ones that can persuade other people to their point of view. The power of speech is everywhere. We see it in Pop Culture. I have never felt so American as when President Bill announced that we would not go quietly into the night in the fight against the Aliens in Independence day. It is in our everyday lives, when those we respect inspire us with anecdotes of how they became the people we hold in such high regard. And it is in the world around us. Martin Luther King’s words will live forever, dream of a society where the value of a person is not determined by the colour of their skin. Kevin Rudd’s ‘Sorry’ speech, when we finally took responsibility as a nation for the abhorrent treatment of the Stolen Generation. Severn Suzuki’s speech to the United Nations, reminding the elders of our world of their responsibility to those who would inherit the Earth. Speech is how we relate to each other, how we define ourselves. It is how we communicate our passions, our ideas, our beliefs and our values. It is how we develop and grow in our understanding of ourselves and of others. It is how we inspire action in the world around us. Here’s hoping we have another 50 years of the Festival of Speech.

Talking with our 2016 - 17 School Leaders

Eli George - Captain I like that at Lithgow High School, the school is a big part of the local community and that it gives so many opportunities to the students and teacher alike. I love the teacher-student relationships that have blossomed over my time here. I became a school leader so I can give back to my school and so I can learn leadership skills that will help me later in life.

During my time at LHS I have been able to be involved in many things, such as School Hockey Team, the School Debating Team, the School Musicals just to name a few. I have also had

the opportunity to be part of many leadership groups in the school, including the Student Representative Council. As a school leader I would like to be able to make the school life of students and teachers as pleasant as possible. I would also like to be able to leave my mark on the school with some sort of change. In the future I would love to go to University and become a Paediatrician and be able to start a family of my own.

Amy Muir - Captain

I love Lithgow High school because ever since I started here in Year 7, there has never been a dull moment. I have met some brilliant people, students and staff alike, that have helped me along the way. Students here are able to express themselves and are provided with many opportunities to succeed. Choosing to become a school leader was an easy decision for me as I am very passionate about this school and helping it to become even better. LHS has provided me with many rewarding opportunities throughout the years including playing in Sporting Teams such as Netball and Touch Football, and representing the School in Musicals, Drama and Music and Dance Performances, Anzac Day Marches and Debating Festivals of Speech and Premiers Debating Challenge. I have also been offered vast opportunities to enhance my leadership skills. As a member of the SRC I learnt what it takes to be a good leader such as communication and working with others to organise and run whole school events. As a leader I would like to continue to make LHS a supportive, safe and fun environment for students and staff by helping to improve teacher and student communication. I would also like to plan and run more events for the school and become a role model for younger students. My goal for the future is to work hard

Page 7: Lithgow High School · and Music and Dance Performances, Anzac Day Marches and Debating Festivals of Speech and Premiers Debating Challenge. I have also been offered vast opportunities

Lithgow High School – Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 7

over the next year or so and achieve high marks in the HSC. After school I see myself attend University, I am uncertain about which course. I would love to meet new people and travel to places I have never been before.

Samuel Gray - Vice Captain Lithgow High School provides many different opportunities for the student body, which makes it a very diverse school, catering to every student’s different interests and needs. I chose to become a school leader to represent the students well. LHS has provided me with many opportunities during my time here. I have learnt many new things over the course of my time here,

providing me with important, valuable life skills that I will make use of for years to come. LHS has also given me the opportunity to learn and play sport. It has allowed me to make friends in a good environment. Whilst a school leader I would like to set a standard that people look back on proudly. In the future I hopefully will be successful in gaining a good job, living a comfortable life filled with sport.

Ayla Shaw -Vice Captain

Lithgow High School is a supporting environment that provided every student with many opportunities to succeed in their school career. I wanted to be a leader because I am nearing the end of my school life and want to make the most out of my remaining time by giving something back to the school. I also think it will be valuable experience for me to gain leadership qualities which will help me later in life. LHS has enabled me to create long lasting friendships with students from different primary schools. It has also provided me with opportunities to be part of leadership teams such as the Press Club while being able to study the subjects I find interesting and enjoyable. As a student leader I would like to make LHS a safe comfortable and happy environment for everyone while continuing to nurture teacher student relationships. In the future I would love to attend University and study something I am passionate about however I’m not entirely sure what that is yet!

Kirrily Beutel - Prefect I like that Lithgow High School is very accepting, it offers many opportunities to succeed, and the teachers are always so devoted to their students. Being a prefect can lead to great opportunities inside and outside of school. I have been a part of Leadership Roll Calls since Year 7, these include Maths Tutor, Peer Skilling and an Anti-Bullying Roll Call. I have also had the opportunity to be involved in Sporting Teams, Netball, Basketball and many others.

As a student leader I would like to keep promoting anti-bullying and to make the school enjoyable for everyone. In the future I am not exactly sure what my future will involve, I hope to do well in my HSC and later on attend University.

Mitchell Brain - Prefect

I really like Lithgow High School because of the opportunities it has given me for life after school and getting ready to get into the workforce. I also like the opportunities it has given me to make new friends and connect with new people. I chose to become a leader so I could help the school system, focusing on the physical education subjects. Lithgow High has given me the opportunities to develop my sporting abilities by letting me represent the school in Hockey, Cricket and Basketball. It has let me represent the school in sport all across the state. I want to maintain the school’s commitment to providing good outdoor equipment for the students to use. I would love to travel overseas and be a strength and conditioning coach for Paris Saint-Germain, a Professional Soccer Team in France.

Kiara McDonald - Prefect

I like how Lithgow High School has many supporting and approachable staff and leaders. The opportunities and the education system has allowed myself to gain the confidence to actually run as a student leader; with this I hope to further improve my leadership and team building skills. Some of the opportunities LHS have given me during my time include being a member of the Maths Tutoring and Anti-Bullying Roll Calls and I have also been part of many Sporting Teams. As a student leader I hope to help bring out other students’ confidence and help to

organise fun sporting, fundraising and learning experiences for current and future students to enjoy. In the future I hope to successfully complete my HSC, heading off

Page 9: Lithgow High School · and Music and Dance Performances, Anzac Day Marches and Debating Festivals of Speech and Premiers Debating Challenge. I have also been offered vast opportunities

Lithgow High School – Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 9

to University having a job I like doing, just achieving my goals and most of all being happy with who I become.

Joshua Stait - Prefect

Lithgow High School offers many opportunities for a wide range of activities such as Academic, Sporting, Musical and many more. I wanted to become a school leader to promote these activities and help student’s come up with more activities that they will find enjoyable. Lithgow High School has given me many opportunities over my years to express myself and enjoy school life. These opportunities include the end of year excursions to Luna Park, Castle Mountain, and the Year 10 Ski Trip. Lithgow High has also given me the chance to perform in the School Musical and in the Stage Band. Lithgow High has also given me the chance to help out students through Maths Tutoring and as a part of the Anti-Bullying Roll Call. As a student leader I would like to try to promote fun activities like the Musical, Swimming Carnival and the Fun Days. I also want to present the ideas given to me by the students. In the future I hope to go to University and study teaching and hopefully become a Primary School Teacher or Music Teacher.

Rhianna Hampton De Vries - Prefect Lithgow High School has a very supportive and inclusive school culture, and I love it. I chose to become a Prefect because I wanted to give back to this place and offer support for the student’s body. Lithgow High school has given me one of the most valuable thing in life, a well-rounded education. Students are offered opportunities to practise whatever skills they specialise in. For example, I have participated in the Festival of Speech as a Debater and in Talent

Quests Singing. During my time as a prefect, I would like to develop my leadership skills and create a positive impact. In the future, one day I would like to be a powerful, influential position of some sort. As you can see, this is a very vague aspiration so far. Hopefully I can narrow this down within the next year. All I know is that I am interested in studying either Science or Business at a University level.

Page 10: Lithgow High School · and Music and Dance Performances, Anzac Day Marches and Debating Festivals of Speech and Premiers Debating Challenge. I have also been offered vast opportunities

Isaac Christofis - Prefect Lithgow High School offers many exciting opportunities, and this is one I could not miss out on. It has been a gateway to further many of my skills, it gives me the confidence and power necessary to reach my full potential and put across my ideas of a school that is fit to be the very best. At LHS I have been given the chance to be associated with many programs inside and outside of school hours such as Musicals, Drama Performances, Dance Festivals and Fundraising Events at the school. If none of these activities suit your fancy, believe me, there are plenty of others that will. As a student leader, I would like to maybe focus less on changing the school and instead focus on promoting the welfare and morale of the students. I believe the true key to success is motivation, development and enjoyable relationships with students and teachers will help further their education and release their full potential. In the future I see myself continuing to strive for the best, passing on as much of my knowledge as I can, and promoting courage, imitative, teamwork and respect within all of those I meet in my future career or lifestyle path, whatever it may be.

Bree Anlezark - Prefect What I like about Lithgow High School is the atmosphere, it makes individuals feel important and cares about the wellbeing of all students. I wanted to become a school leader and create new activities that make the school more enjoyable place to be. LHS has provided me with many opportunities during my tine here like representing the school in Sport, developing my leadership skills by being a part of the Anti-Bullying Leadership Group, Tutoring Group

and Peer-Skilling Roll Calls. As a student leader I would like to promote more activities between the school and the Lithgow Community and small businesses within the town. In the future after High School I plan to become a Beautician and maybe sometime in the future start my own business.

Lachlan Stanley - Prefect I like that at Lithgow High school you can always ask for help in any aspect and receive it. I wanted to become a Prefect because there are things I would to change and I really just wanted to see if I could implement some of my ideas. I have been an English Tutor during my time at LHS and have also been given the opportunity to represent at Sporting Events at School and Western Region Level. I was a member of the Leadership Roll Call and the Anti-Bullying Roll Call. I would like to try as a school leader to implement some change in various policies including the uniform. In the future I would like to hopefully have a job and a place to live and to be happy.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Welcome back to Term 3, this term is quite busy with the finalisation of Preliminary courses, major excursions for some and the beginning of Subject Selection for the 2017 school year.

Year 7 Year 7 have just moved over to some new courses in Semester Two, which will be exciting. Year 7 will have a meeting in the coming weeks regarding Subject Selection for going into Year 8 in 2017. Lithgow High School offers elective courses to Year 8. This allows students the opportunity to select one elective to complete over each Semester - which is a Two Term Timeslot. Year 7 will be given the information about this process of selecting courses and then time to chat with their family to make informed selections.

Year 11 Year 11 are into a very busy term that will see the conclusion of their Preliminary Study. This term they will complete all of their assessment requirements for the Record of School Achievement and move into the HSC course in Term 4. The students are advised to keep up with their study and ensure that they plan out any assessments, making use of the Staff in the School Library during the day in Study Periods and also the Afternoon Study Time on Thursdays. Year 11 are to be aware that they are required to complete all aspects of their Preliminary Courses in order to move into the HSC Year. Students who have outstanding assessments will be followed up for completion or they may not be eligible to begin the HSC Course Content.

Year 10 Subject Selection Evening - Wednesday 10th August On Wednesday 10th August at 6pm in the school Hall we are inviting all of year 10 students and their families to the information evening for Year 10 into Year 11 2017. The subject selection evening will outline the structure of senior study and allow for students and parents to become informed on the processes for selecting a pattern of study in the senior years. There are mandatory requirements that students need to fulfil and all of this information will be presented during the evening. Students and parents will also have the opportunity to discuss individual options with Head Teachers during the evening. Staff will discuss course structures and provide support for parents and students with enquiries into courses in their faculty areas. It is important for all parents of year 10 to attend this evening to assist their child with selecting an appropriate pattern of study that will set them up best for success in their senior study.

COMMUNITIY LIAISON OFFICER Towards the end of Term 2 we conducted our Parent/Teacher Evening and we would like to thank all of the families who participated and kept their teachers busy reporting on students’ progress. As you know due to the weather we had to reschedule the other Parent Teacher Evening. The rescheduled night is Monday 8th August from 4.00pm - 7.00pm bookings are now open via the Millennium Booking System and set up will be the same - Hall Maths, English, Science, TAS/Computing Z2 Corridor CAPA, HSIE and PDHPE. If you require assistance, please contact me anytime on the school number. A reminder of why attendance is such an important factor in educational success. With such rich lessons, missing school can leave students feeling far behind and a little lost. Whilst it is important for students to stay home when ill, good attendance is crucial for good educational outcomes. The Raising Children Network is a complete Australian resource for parenting. This site has information, tools and resources for parents of students in the pre-teen and early teen years. Australian Government Supported, it helps teens make informed choices on many topics including Cyber Bullying, Social Media and Puberty. All content is quality assured. http://raisingchildren.net.au

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Leaders Induction Ceremony On Tuesday the 2nd of August the Leadership Induction Ceremony will be held at Lithgow High School to officially induct the leaders for 2016 - 2017. The groups include the Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects, House Captains and Vice Captains, Students Representative Council and the Peer Mediators. I would like to wish them all the best the year ahead and look forward to supporting the valuable work they carry out across the school. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing leaders of the school. They have all done a fantastic job and have been fine representatives for Lithgow High School.

Year 12 Trial HSC - The first group of Trial Exams has been successful and students are preparing for the next group of exams in Week 5. It is important that students continue to study and make use of the resources in the school. This includes the Tutors in the Library and the Year 12 Teachers who are available to give feedback when necessary. It is important to be aware that if you miss an exam you will need to follow it up with an illness and misadventure application. Relevant documentation will be required to complete the process. Please discuss this with the Deputy Principal or Careers adviser if you have any questions. School references - Year 12 students were issued with applications for references this week. I would like to encourage all students to make us of this recommendation. The hard work and participation over the years should be acknowledged and recorded for future reference. A reminder that these applications are due at the end of Week 3.

Year 10 It is that time of the year when the Year 10 Students and Staff are preparing for the Annual Ski Trip. I am really happy that the students responded to this excursion with enthusiasm. We have a large number of students attending and brave staff supervising. I am sure that they will enjoy themselves and many happy memories will be made. Can’t wait to see the pictures!

2016/17 - SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

2016-2017 Prefect Application Process

Our Student Leadership Team comprises of Two Captains, Two Vice Captains and Eight Prefects. Their Leadership Term runs from Term 3 until the end of Term 2 the following year. This allows our Prefects and Captains a full year in their leadership roles but then releases them during their important last term of Year 12 to strive for Academic Excellence, without added responsibilities.

It is with both sadness and excitement that the school has just completed the application process for the 2016 - 2017 Leadership Team. Our current leaders have been wonderful in fulfilling their important role within the School Community and their Term in Office has flown by at a rapid pace. With the end of Term approaching they will hand over their Blazers and Responsibility to the next Leadership.

The Application Process is quite extensive and the quality of our School Leaders is a wonderful reflection of the hard work and vision of leadership within our school. To apply for a Prefect Position, students must first submit an Application Form and be endorsed by two of the School Teaching Staff and Two Students in Year 11. These applications are then reviewed by the Prefect Coordinator and Principal to ensure that all students meet the Essential Criteria before they are allowed to progress to the next stage. The criteria include: having a record of Solid Academic Learning and Attendance, displaying a commitment to the wearing of School Uniform and being involved in past Leadership Activities, either at School or in the Community.

Students who meet the criteria are then invited to an interview conducted by the current Prefects and Captains. During these interview students are asked questions on Leadership, with the aim that applicants reflect on what type of leader they would like to be. Our current Leadership Team provides feedback and suggestions to all

Page 15: Lithgow High School · and Music and Dance Performances, Anzac Day Marches and Debating Festivals of Speech and Premiers Debating Challenge. I have also been offered vast opportunities

Lithgow High School – Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 15

interviewed students based on the knowledge they have gained over their time in the role.

The next step involves students preparing a speech to present to the entire School Community on a Special Assembly, daunting task for anyone. Our nominees were fabulous and had some great ideas they conveyed to the students and staff. Voting then occurs the day after the speeches during Roll Call. All Staff and Students are eligible to vote for Prefects. Once the votes have been tallied a vote then occurs for the Captains and Vice Captains. Students in Year 11, all Staff and Students on the Student Representative Council are eligible to vote. This extensive process has produced excellent leaders over the past few years and with anticipation our new Student Leader were announced in the last week of Term 2, all our School Leaders will inducted into their positions for the year during a Formal Induction Ceremony on the 2nd August 9.30am. Family/caregivers and friends are all welcome to attend.

Congratulations to the Successful Leadership Group 2016/17

PCYC Fundraiser - Y.E.S day program Recently the Lithgow PCYC, in partnership with the Rapid Relief Team and the Lithgow

High School, held the second Annual Youth Education and Services (YES) day. This

was, in no small way, a great success in all aspects.

Students of Year 7 and 8 were given the opportunity to engage with many of the

specialised Police Officers within the Lithgow Area followed by the entire School

and Staff being given a truly excellent BBQ Lunch - including some of the best

brownies encountered by anyone!

The day was organized to assist the Lithgow PCYC raise much needed funds to

continue to support their mission of engaging young people in positive activities in

life. Thank you to RRT for their overwhelming organization and generosity in providing

the BBQ, feeding the entire school community.

Digital Safety - Important Message for students

Starrs Productions, a Travelling High School Performance Company, visited this week to perform a Play about Cyber Safety to Year 7 students. The play dealt with the consequences of using Social Networking Sites and the internet inappropriately. The performance was not only entertaining but dealt with the very relevant and serious issues on safety. Many students had questions after the performance that were answered by the actors in a short session after the performance.

The recent Musical Production of The Secret Garden was a huge success and a very rewarding experience for all concerned. The students really brought this beautiful story to life. Kaitlyn Trounce was outstanding as the orphaned girl Mary who comes to live in the mysterious house on the hill after her mother dies in the Cholera epidemic in India. The parts of her uncle and her ghost mother were played by Isaac Trounce and Brittany Menzies. Their portrayal of these characters showed not only great talent but maturity beyond their years. The part of the uncle's brother was played to perfection by Christopher Seymour and the duet of Lily's Eyes was a highlight of the whole show. Keely Newham played the role of Martha and her timing and sense of humour brought some light relief to the production. Caleb Traish played the crippled Colin and he was able to bring this role to life with his great acting ability. Zac Arkley Smith and Finnian Galloway once again showed their fine stage skills and were really believable in their particular roles. A large cast of ghosts and servants completed the production which was one of the most difficult ever attempted by Lithgow High School but probably one of the best. A huge vote of thanks goes to Brian and Jan Kinney and Mr Ron Draper for all their hard work and to Lithgow Musical Society for their support and help.

Last of all we must thank the students, staff, families and the Lithgow Community for coming along in the cold weather to support the show.

The Jungle Book

On the 15th of April 2016, Disney released a live action remake of The Jungle Book. Unlike the original animated movie, this new version displays more depth to the story. For those who haven’t seen the original, the movie follows the story of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the jungle. After the tiger Shere Khan threatens

to kill him, Mowgli must leave the jungle with the help of Baloo a bear, and Bagheera a panther. This movie in our opinion is not as good as the original but the graphics of this film are amazing and appeals to older ages as well as children. This movie is a great film for the entire family and filled with fantastic imagery and music from the original movie. Fans of the original will thoroughly enjoy this fantastic film. We rate this movie

Daft Punk | Discovery | Album Review

Daft Punk is an electronic music duo consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. Both musicians originated in France, and joined together in 1993 with their debut single, ‘The New Wave’. Daft Punk’s music covers a wide range of genres; electronic, house, funk, rock, dance and more. It is for this reason that I find Daft Punk such an enjoyable band to listen to. The album contains some of Daft Punk’s biggest hits, including ‘One More Time’, ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’ and ‘Digital Love’. Discovery is Daft Punk’s second album. It was released February 26th 2001 by Virgin Records. The album was used as a soundtrack to the film ‘Interstella 5555’. The film is a visual expression of the album. The clips can be found on YouTube in the form of music videos. ‘Discovery’ is my personal favourite Daft Punk album, and I would highly recommend it for lovers of any genre.
