Celebrate the first 18-holedisc golf course in Manhattanwith the 2014 Ice Bowl!February 22nd Manhattanwill host the local edition ofthis national tournament, held at Fairmont Disc GolfCourse.

This tournament is a fooddrive fundraiser. Interestedpersons are asked to bringmonetary donations, cannedfoods or non-perishableitems.

Registration is now OPEN tointerested participants. Onthe 22nd, player registration

begins at 10:30 a.m. followedby a ribbon cutting at noonto commemorate the newcourse.

The tournament begins at12:30- “no wimps, no whiners.”http://icebowlhq.com/event/lcm-ice-bowl/_____________________What’s the local storyon disc golf?

According to local club, DiscFanatics of Kansas, memberRick Petrie, “We needed tostay ahead of the demand forthis sport as it’s becoming morepopular. What really broke the

ice for us was being set up atthe Get Around 2 It! event inMay [2012], and having peoplereally recognize that we needsome space.”

Petrie states that the coursewill be completed by thetime of the tournament. Ithas taken about a year forthe county to create thecourse, and the club to raisemoney through sponsoring ofthe course fairways. Sponsorsand other attendees will beable to see all of the sponsorplaques on display at the rib-bon cutting on the 22nd.

So how does one pursue aninterest in this burgeoningsport? There are threecourses in Manhattan;Warner Park, Fairmont Park, and KSU Campus. Petrie rec-ommends these three basicsteps for beginners. 1) Avoid the temptation to take your standard Frisbee to a course

2) Visit a local retailer- there are several options includingPathfinder, On the Wild Side, Dick’s and Wal Mart to get some official disc golf discs

3) Go to the first hole of a course. “If it’s nice enough

for a rookie to be on the course, it’s nice enough forthe older players to be outthere—we love to help new players!”

The local club, Disc Fanaticsof Kansas, currently have aTuesday night league, and aSunday afternoon league thatmeets at 1:30 p.m.

The additional 9 holes thatadvance the Fairmont courseto the only 18-hole course inManhattan means that out-side tournaments now canbe played in Manhattan.
