Mr. Kindalfrom the Delaware Canal State Park visitedwith us to give us interesting facts abouthow animals adapt, migrate, or hibernateduring the winter months. The studentslistened to a book about the changes thattake place in winter. They then were able

discuss what animals adapted, hibernatedor migrated in the book by looking atpictures that Mr. Kindal brought in to sharewith us. The mostexciting part of the presentation was thestuffed fox that he brought in for the kids toview. Theylearned thatthe hair onparts of thefox is darker

    Make that Reading Connection

How else can you fit in more time to help your youngster become abetter reader?

As you go about your day, narrate what you are doing usingat least one unfamiliar word repeatedly in your description.Explain what the word is and then use it again in context.Write it out so they can see what the word looks like.

Ask your young one to give you both a factand

an opinionback to back. Help them differentiate the two by modeling ityourself. Model and Explain: " The ice cream is cold. I thinkthat Cookies and Cream is the best flavor. What fact canyou give me about ice cream? What opinion do you haveabout ice cream?"

Get a pack of "stickie" notes and place them in areas yourchild will find them. Vary the messages to include directives, reminders, and kudos in a way that leads to a follow updiscussion later on in the day.

Taking advantage of every opportunity to help develop strong

language skills can always help your child a better reader. Fit it in!

March School is off to a good start usingFirst in Math Online Program in grades 2,

3, and 4. First In Math activities employ Deep Practicetechniques to rapidly increase computation, problemsolving, critical thinking and essential math basics. Skills

that may take months of regular practice can be mastered ina much shorter time using Deep Practice techniques and theimmediate feedback online learning can provide. Children usingFIM have shown dramatic increases in math scoresacross theboard from the top students to the most math-challenged

learners. We are excited to see students'active engagement in the program againthis year. Classrooms have alreadystarted earning weekly trophies for beingthe team of the week in their grade.

Second graders had the opportunity to learnmore about animal adaptations with Mr. Kindel,

a park ranger from Delware Canal State Park.Mr. Kindel came to our school through MissKordek. Children explored ways animalschange their bodies and behaviors in order tosurvive. Animals such as foxes change the color of their fur toprotect themselves from predators, or survive in colder or

warmer environments.Other animals canalso find different

ways to hunt, find andstorage food duringthe winter, or covertheir bodies with athicker or oily layer toswim faster or for longer periods of time. When askedto list three or more facts about animal adaptations, children could go on, and on, and on!

    The Little Leopards

welcome back our AmericaReads tutors for the Springsemester. Most of the Fall

semester tutors are returningto March School to continuesupporting our students withliteracy and math skills. Ourstaff and students are very

excited to have the tutors backto help in the classroom

settings. The tutors are quiteeager to begin their classroom

assignments. We are sofortunate to be able to havethe America Reads/America

    Counts program in our schoolcommunity.

In art class, second graderslearned about famous Americanpainter Georgia OKeefe andbrought to life beautiful pansies, roses and calla lilies with ModelMagic. They reviewed the artelements of pattern and repetitionas they created decorative vasesto hold their creations.

Students in Mrs. Rodrigues' class have been practicingtheir shopping skills. After reviewing the names andvalues of coins and bills, children counted differentamounts of money in their "wallets" (trays) to see if theywould have enough to buy a givenitem. If yes, could they pay withthe exact amount, or would theyget any money back? If no, howmuch money would they stillneed? The fun continues aschildren now translate all thesedifferent ideas into addition andsubtraction problems.
