Oh, the Places... for Math and Literacy Night The families of F.A. March Elementary came to enjoy a night of Math, Literacy and Book Fair

Activities. Oh, the places they went on Wednesday, October 24, from 6:00-8:00, which beganwith signing in on on one fish two fish raffle tickets. To think they they saw it on Reeder Street, families followed maps that took them to make-and-take activities, fact fluencycenters, money hot dots, and reading fluency and comprehension stations. Many sessionshad make and take activities with parent resources. In addition, educational computer andiPad activities gave students an opportunity to show off for their families how much they have learned and madethemselves proud in math and literacy all year. Familieswere fortunate this year to experience the book fair thissame evening. Many lucky families won door prizes of books, gift certificates, school spiritwear coupons, andschool supplies. A huge thank you to all of the families

and staff that made another math and literacy night asuccess.

The power of contextual knowledge can not be underestimated inthe process of improving a student's ability to comprehend writtentext. While many families make the effort of taking the extra time todiscuss a wide range of topics with their children, busy parents arealways confronted with the challenges of making the most of thetime that they have with their families.

Make the most of your time together and seek out your child'sviews on why certain things are designed they way they are for ouruse. For example, why are roads numbered the way they arenumbered? Most students have no idea that the Americantransportation system uses even numbers for roads that run Eastand West, but Odd numbers for roads that run North and South.( For example, 78 and 22 run east and west while routes 33 and309 run north and south).

This process can extend itself into many areas that we encounterin day to day life that are not expressly taught in public schools.Take the time to turn off the radio and start a conversation to helpbuild the kind of background knowledge that supports studentlearning!

" At the FAME assembly on Wednesday, November 21,2012 the students and staff were introduced to a welcomedaddition to our school familyour very own leopard mascotcostume. Our friendly mascot eagerly danced into theassembly to the lyrics of the song, FAME. Everyone in the

room was smiling and bouncing to the music while ourleopard danced and waved to all." In the coming months, there will be a special MarchSchool contest to name our new mascot friend. Our leopardis quite eager to attend the many upcoming school events tosupport school spirit and March pride. " After exploring the concepts of realism and fantasy,Mrs. Costello s Third Grade class learned that some storiescan be mostly realistic with elements of fantasy interwoveninto the story. Stories such as these are oftenentertaining to readers." Using fall leaves to create leaf creatures, the leafcreatures became the inspiration for the student s ownrealism / fantasy stories. The leaf creatures were givencreative names such as Oakie, Maplewood, andAutumn Maple Leaf. In some stories, the leaves walkedacross the Niagara Falls, danced through the woods, fought off Darth Vader, and took a camping trip. The

This year our Scholastic Bookfair was aresounding success! We sold over $3,300 worth ofbooks. This has been our highest amount sold inover three years.

March School is off to a good start usingFirst in Math Online Program in grades 2,

3, and 4. First In Math activities employ Deep Practicetechniques to rapidly increase computation, problem

solving, critical thinking and essential math basics. Skillsthat may take months of regular practice can be mastered in

a much shorter time using Deep Practice techniques and theimmediate feedback online learning can provide. Children usingFIM have shown dramatic increases in math scoresacross theboard from the top students to the most math-challenged

learners. We are excited to see students'active engagement in the program againthis year. Classrooms have alreadystarted earning weekly trophies for beingthe team of the week in their grade.

    Halloween U date

A group of Easton Area High School students visited F.A. March

School classrooms. Two high school students visited eachclassroom to share a story they co-authored. During the visit, thirdgrade students asked questions about the process of creating andpublishing a story. They learned the difculty and excitement thatgoes into story development." As a class, the two student visitors guided the students tocreate a classroom story. Using their knowledge of realism / fantasy, character traits, andthe importance of a goodbeginning, middle, and end,the students worked

together to create anentertaining story. Below isthere story." Once upon a time, Ivywas invited to Mr. Maple scostume party. Ivy was picked up by the wind and landedin Mr. Maple s yard. Along the way, she was bit by an owland transformed into one. Ivey drank the maple syrupfrom the bottom of the tree and she quickly turned back

into a leaf. Ivy looked around an all she saw was owlfeathers. She decided to use some maple syrup and roll in the feathersto make a costume. Ivy climbed up Mr. Maple s bark to get to the party.Once she got to the party at the top of the tree she saw all her friends.

She was very worried and embarrassed about her costume. Her friends told her that hercostumes was one of the best! To her surprise, she was awarded the best costume of thenight. The party was coming to an end and the wind was picking up. A strong gust of windcame along and blew Ivy and all of the other leaves home. Ivy was glad to be home, and isalready working on her costume for next year!

Do you like to carvejack-o-lanterns for

Halloween?Mrs. Danyi's 1st and 3rd gradeESL students carved virtualpumpkins on the computer. Thestudents then labeled or wrotesentences describing theircreations.

John M, 1st grade studentwrote: "I have one orange bigscary, jack-o-lantern. It has acandle in the mouth."3rd grade student, Hadji T.wrote, "There is a scary jack-o-lantern inside the pumpkinpatch. The jack-o-lantern has acandle. The light shines on thehand that is laying on the eld. Itseems spooky because it lookslike it is going to rain andthunder. I hope I never see the

jack-o-lantern again." Thestudents enjoyed the virtualcarving and sharing their

    " Asthirdgrade

class we read the historical ction story called William

s House, they learned about homes built in England in 1637, and how theycompared to homes built in New England, upon the arrival of the

settlers. Weather conditions in New England forced the settlers to makemany changes to their homes, in order to survive the cold winters andstrong winds. The typical England climate differed from the summersand winters faced in New England." In an effort to bring to life Colonial times for the students, Mr. andMrs. Lodge, grandparents of a third grade student, shared their travelingColonial Museum with the children. The children had the opportunity tolearn about common kitchen tools of that era. They experienced light

sources such as candle-making andlanterns used for both lighting and sendingsignals. They also saw bed warmers, and

learned of trundle beds used to save space in small homes. In addition, the students heard the alarm used by some colonists to call for helpfrom a neighbor, who may have lived a distance through the woods ordown the road." Viewing the traveling Colonial Museum was an experience thechildren will not forget. The opportunity to be exposed to tools datingback to George Washington s time was an amazing experience. Mostsurprising, was to see how tools have evolved over time. Mrs. Costello s

class would like to extend their sincere appreciation to
