President‟s Message

The SNOWBALL was, a rousing success, thanks to Cheryl

& Roger Nesuda and many helpers. We had the best turnout

ever that anyone can remember and we surpassed our goal of

100 attendees by about 20. If you were one of the few not

there, check out the photos on page 7 and see what you

missed. Thanks to the Crowne Plaza and our great band, the

Rhythm Shakers. Also, watch for photos in the Democrat/

Gazette’s Sunday High Profile section in two or three weeks.

The December meeting “TOYS FOR TOTS” went very well

with a table full of toys and a few checks for a great cause.

Our first ski trip to Big Sky Montana leaves January 6th

and the Eager Eleven can hardly wait to hit the slopes!

Ronnie has booked 50 seats again for Oaklawn Park “Day at

the Races”. The date is Saturday March 17th, St Patrick’s

Day! We will sponsor a race and this is also the Boat &

Truck giveaway and the $500,00. Rebel Stakes! Start signing

up now for a reserved seat! They will sell out fast!

The next meeting on January 10th will be a Winter Cruise

Ship theme so put on some tropical outfits and join in the

fun. Be sure to let Ben Thompson know your preferences on

a cruise destination. I will not be there, but I will hopefully

be “cruising down the slopes” at Big Sky. Be sure to give

your full attention to Cheryl Nesuda, our lovely Vice Presi-

dent, who will be making announcements at the meeting.

I hope all of you are having a wonderful Holiday season. It is finally the time of year that we skiers can get serious and

head out for the slopes, so please wish us all well and...

Nobody knows I……. I videoed and edited wed-

ding tapes for a lot of my friends and their kids.

My tapes outlived a lot of their marriages.

How did you find out about the LRSC A Pine

Bluff friend, Rodney Getchell, was a member and

took me to a meeting in 1982 and two weeks later

I was on a ski trip to Canada and fell off my first

chair lift and froze my —- off!!!

Your idea of a romantic evening Dinner and a

I drive a 2011 Suburban, (3) 1937 Ford street

rods, and a 1940 Ford pickup. I also have a „65

Shelby Cobra re-creation.

This is a trip for skiers. With over 4000 acres of ski trails, Big Sky & Moonlight

Basin offer unparalleled skiing opportunities. Take the Big Sky Lone Peak Tram

to the 1,166 ft summit & ski the total most vertical feet of any ski area in the US.

With views of Yellowstone & three bordering states, you will experience the

best Montana has to offer. We have a limited number of space (12) and each

participant should be ready to ski their rear ends off at this wonderful ski area.

The trip includes round-trip air fare from Little Rock to Bozeman, Montana,

round trip transfers from the airport to Big Sky, 7 nights lodging (two to a room)

in the slope side Huntley Lodge (named for TV news man Chet Huntley) just

steps from the lifts, 5 day adult Big Sky lift ticket (Optional additional day &

Moonlight Basin access available at additional cost), full breakfast buffet daily,

The lodge rooms have a wet bar, coffee maker, refrigerator & TV. The hotel

has the Huntley Dining room, Chet’s Bar & Grill, espresso bar, shops, ski

storage, the Solace Spa, fitness center, sauna, outdoor heated pool & hot tub.

This is a Friday to Friday trip and is sure to sell out fast, so sign up early. The

Big Sky Mountain stats are: 400 inches of annual snowfall, elevation of 11,166 ft

& a base elevation of 7000 ft . The trails are 26% expert, 33% advanced, 21%

intermediate & 20% beginner. You may pay in three equal installments of

$563.00 with the first one due at sign up. We cannot hold space without a

deposit. We also strongly suggest that you purchase travel insurance for that

unexpected kink in your travel plans. As always, you must be current with your

dues for the 2011/2012 year. Skiing can be a dangerous sport and the

Always a favorite ski destination for the Little Rock Ski Club, this trip includes:

round-trip airfare from Little Rock to Aspen, round-trip airport transfers provided

by the lodge, seven nights lodging at the Pokolodi Lodge (located at the base

area of Snowmass Village next to the bus stop & about 100 yards from the main

ticket office & Cirque Bar & Grill), 5 day adult lift ticket, continental breakfast

daily & a welcome reception. We will fly on United Airlines. For the club to

receive the best trip pricing, we must sell the trip as a complete package, but it

will be possible to get more or fewer number of lift tickets for those who want to

on a LRSC trip.

In addition to Snowmass Mt., your lift ticket is also good at Aspen Mt., Aspen

Highlands and Buttermilk Mt. (a total of four mountains !). A free shuttle is

available to take you to the other ski areas & to Aspen for shopping and fine

dining.

It is highly recommended that participants purchase trip insurance to cover

unforeseen circumstances that would cause you a monetary loss if you could

ARKANSAS RICE DEPOT

Our Story

Way back in 1982, a few caring Arkansans noticed there were a lot of children, families and

senior citizens going to bed hungry right here in Arkansas. Many food pantries were struggling

for supplies. The cupboard was bare at the shelters.

Children were hungry. So these folks organized and looked for food. And they found rice.

Home-grown, nourishing and inexpensive rice. They paid for it out of their own pockets and

gave it to anyone in need.

Soon word spread about this organization that provided free rice to any group willing to fight

hunger in their community. And the Arkansas Rice Depot was born.

Within a couple of years, nearly one hundred rice growers from Riceland and Producers mills

were donating rice.

This was just the kind of foundation the charity needed. By 1986, then-Governor Bill Clinton

helped the Arkansas Rice Depot distribute its one millionth pound of rice. For a while, rice re-

mained the only food distributed, and though nourishing, it wasn't a complete meal.

A Billy Graham Crusade changed all that. Six tons of food items were collected that year,

and soon dry goods, canned foods, frozen meats and other items were donated, ware-

housed and distributed across the state.

In 1994, an Arkansas public school nurse noticed some children arriving at school listless and

hungry. They said their school lunch the day before was the last meal they had. She won-

dered if the Arkansas Rice Depot could help. Immediately, the Food For Kids program was

launched, sending hungry children home with backpacks filled with food every night.

Today the Arkansas Rice Depot serves around 600 Arkansas public schools and the Food For

Kids backpack program has been duplicated across the US, helping feed hundreds of thou-

sands of hungry kids.

Every year the Arkansas Rice Depot feeds around half a million hungry Arkansans, distributing

food to shelters, schools, disaster relief efforts and homebound seniors. All with minimal over-

head.

And in the summer of 2009, Arkansas Rice Depot received national recognition of our pro-

grams, when All Roker brought NBC's Today Show to the Depot, with his Lend A Hand pro-

gram. Through Lend A Hand, Arkansas Rice Depot received a five truckloads of items with a

value totaling over $600,000. Local dignitaries came out to join in on the fun. We were one of

only five charitable organizations chosen through Lend A Hand.

You see, we don't believe in big salaries or glitzy marketing campaigns – 98% of all donations

go to feeding the hungry. So you can be confident your donation fills an empty stomach. It's

how this charity started, and it's how we'll continue our mission.
