A Note From the Director It is only by looking back, that we understand where we’ve got to. It is only when looking up that we are given the strength to keep going. It is only in relation to others that we know who we are. Now while that is some pretty highfalutin’ talk, I know it’s been proven true in your life. Look back: While you were spending all morning fighting to stay awake in class, all afternoon studying the material you would be tested on in order to pass that class, and all evening waiting tables to pay for that class, and then waking up the next day only to do it again, did you know, truly know the profound impact that struggle was going to have on your life? Did you hear your alarm every morning at 6am and think to yourself, “what great discipline I am cultivating for myself as a result of rising at this ungodly hour to meet the day. Huzzah!”? Did you revel in your time reading the dense text your professor assigned you and marvel, “my, my, my, the study habits I am arduously cultivating today will serve me well when it comes time to do the research necessary to make a wise decision buying my first home?” Did you bring take-home drinks to each and every table of patrons (who in more cases than you care to remember rewarded your hard work with neither a gracious attitude, nor a generous tip) with a smile believing that one day, your spouse would one day fall in love with the Servant’s heart God carved into your chest over your years of faithful food service? Of course not! You (I, We) said to ourselves: “JUST FIVE MORE MINUTES PLEASE. I DON’T WANT TO GET UP!” (time belongs to me) “THIS PROFESSOR AND HIS TEXTBOOK ARE GARBAGE. I WILL PASS IN SPITE OF THEM!” (success belongs to me) “THE PEOPLE AT THAT TABLE ARE MISERABLE, HORRIBLE, NASTY CHEATS. I HOPE THEY DROP DEAD!” (judgment [grace] belongs to me) And though you struggled day after day with the same fear, anxiety, exhaustion, and resent-ments, you know that whenever you took the time to stop, look up, and remember who you belong to and the paths of glory he has promised you will one day travel, everything was stilled. You didn’t need assurances of where you would go next in this life, because you were assured of your eventual inheritance as a child (relation) of Almighty God. I hope you enjoy this story of a young girl’s jaggedly joyful path through her life as much as you have enjoyed your own. Thank you for coming to share this story with us. Yours, Always, Matt

A Raisin in the Sun

Come witness Forum history as we present our first ever African-American production! This iconic play by Lorraine Hansberry debuted

on Broadway in 1959. The title’s inspiration came from the poem “Harlem” by Langston Hughes. The story tells of an African-

American family’s experiences on the Southside of Chicago as they attempt to better themselves with an insurance payout following the

death of the father. Performances run September 8th-11th

A Heart for the Arts

To be honest, when we were a young married couple,

my husband and I dreamed of a family full of sons. I

think I was afraid of having any daughters like I had been,

knowing that I wasn’t in any way equipped to handle a

“me.” But, as in most instances, God had different plans as

my four daughters grow me, inspire me, and entertain me

in ways that make me so thankful that I didn’t get exactly

what I’d dreamed. Directors are like that. Executive Directors,

Artistic Directors, Production Directors, I guess people of all

kinds are like that. We look at a project, and dream of the

exact way to create it, envisioning every detail, only to find

that reality changes and morphs the vision into something

that, most of the time, is even more beautiful than we had

originally planned. I believe Little Women has become that.

When Matt and I spoke of plans for Little Women, we knew

many of the challenges of a project like this going in a

small venue at the earliest point in the season. But perhaps

we didn’t imagine the incredible passion and full-scale

talent that it would bring. Matt’s vision and skill, and this

cast and crew’s love and talent have manifested a piece of

art that makes us all proud to be a part of The FOA and

kicks the season off with class and style.

Directing a play might be a tad like raising a family. It

may not require exactly the same skills, consistency, or

wisdom, but it does require a humility to see that what you

originally dreamed can become better than you had ever im-

agined.
