LOVE ONE ANOTHER

In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to "love one another as I love you" (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday's selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God's love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer "shows partiality" to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God's love extends to all people, and so should ours.

TODAY’S READING

First Reading: The gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also (Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48).

Psalm: The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power (Psalm 98).

Second Reading: Let us love one another, because love is of God (1 John 4:7-10) or 1 John 4:11-16.

Gospel: This is my commandment: love one anoth-er as I love you (John 15:9-17) or John 17:11b-19.

Live Jesus Forever and Ever Amen!

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Love O God, you are the source of all love and we joyfully lift our voices in song to give you praise for the gift of your Son, Jesus, who gave his life so that we might live. Help us turn away from the slavery of sin and embrace your Word, who calls us to love one another. Grant that, with hearts filled with compas-sion, we may courageously lay aside our needs and work to promote peace and justice throughout the world. Keep us faithful to our baptismal covenant so that we may reveal your saving power and be found on that final day praising your blessed name. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sunday, May 6, 2018 Love One Another

Today’s Readings: Acts of the Apostles 10:25 – 26, 34 – 35, 44 – 48; Psalm 98:1, 2 – 3 3 – 4; 1 John 4:7–10; John 15:9 –17. John’s first letter reminds us once again, in these final days of the Easter season, that God sent his only Son to save us from death. The theme of love permeates today’s readings. As is shown in these readings, love requires much more than warm and fuzzy feelings. In death, Christ shows us love. His suffering, death, and Resurrection remind us that love of God and for our neighbors does require, that we set aside those things that hinder us from know-ing God. When we open ourselves to God, we are filled with love and love cannot be contained. God’s love overflows and yearns to be shared. Because God’s love is so great, it is easy for us to sing the words to Psalm 98. Joined with all of creation, we

joyfully sing of God’s salvation. In the Gospel, Jesus commands that we love as he loves, which means we must take the cross serious-ly. Jesus laid down his life so that we might have life. He went about healing the sick and listening to those on the margins. This is what Jesus teaches us about love, and if we are his followers, we must lay down our life for our neighbors and be willing to risk everything for God’s Kingdom. It is not always easy to love. This week, pray with the Gospel and be attentive to the command, “love one another.” Consider hosting a meal for friends and family to show your love.

This Week at Home

Monday, May 7 St. Lydia The First Reading tells of the conversion of Lydia. She was a dealer of purple cloth, which was expensive. She encounters Paul and Timothy outside the city gates and by God’s grace, her heart was opened to receive the Good News. This encounter with the Word moved her to receive Baptism along with her household. The hospitality she provides is the same care we are called to offer our neighbors. Spend fifteen minutes listening to the Lord in silence today. Today’s Readings: Acts 16:11–15; Psalm 149:1b – 2, 3 – 4, 5 – 6a and 9b; John 15:26 — 16:4a.

Tuesday, May 8 The Jailer The reading from Acts provides another account of con-version. After an earthquake opened the door of the cell, the jailer was amazed that the prisoners remained. What moved the jailer to seek the Lord? When the Word of God resonates in our hearts, it shakes with joy and yearns to be in communion with the living God. Paul and Silas teach that belief in God saves. Do you experience daily conversion? Today, pray for those imprisoned in any way. Today’s Readings: Acts 16:22 – 34; Psalm 138:1– 2ab, 2cde – 3, 7c – 8; John 16:5 –11.

Wednesday, May 9 Mighty and Strong Is your heart alive with the joy of the Resurrection? To-day’s Psalm places upon our lips words of praise. Recall the Easter Vigil and the signs and symbols. Christ has truly conquered sin and death, and by his Resurrection, restored all life. We have much to be grateful for and much to share. Join with all of creation and sing your praise to God, who is mighty and strong. How can you -

spend time expressing praise? Can you do this through drawing, baking, gardening, poetry, or writing in your journal? Today’s Readings: Acts 17:15, 22 — 18:1; Psalm 148:1– 2, 11–12, 13, 14; John 16:12 –15. Thursday, May 10 Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter The First Reading introduces us to a married missionary couple: Aquila and Priscilla, who lived and worked with Paul. The little we know about the couple tells us they were strong pillars in their community and great teachers of the faith. Today, pray for all catechists. Today’s Readings: Acts 18:1– 8; Psalm 98:1, 2 – 3ab, 3cd – 4; John 16:16 – 20.

Friday, May 11 Shake with Joy A line in the Exsultet, the proclamation the deacon sings at the Easter Vigil, states, “let his holy building shake with joy, filled with the mighty voices of the peoples.” These words are so vivid they nearly bring about a tangi-ble vision. The joy of Christ’s triumph over death fills the whole Church and should “shake” our hearts with joy. Allow the love of Christ to capture your being. Today’s Readings: Acts 18:9 –18; Psalm 47:2 – 3, 4 – 5, 6 –7; John 16:20 – 23.

Saturday, May 12 Sing

Knowing that God loves you and fills you with joy, lift your voice in song as you sing (even make up a melody) Psalm 47 for your prayer. Today’s Readings: Acts 18:23 – 28; Psalm 47:2 – 3, 8 – 9, 10; John 16:23b – 28.

I. Acts of the Apostles 1:1 – 11 The Beginning of the Book

The first sentence relates this book to the Gospel of Luke. Recall that the New Testament books were un-signed; and the Gospel of Luke be-gins by being dedicated to "Theophilus," which is translated "God Lover." Second, here we see that Jesus appeared for 40 days to his disciples. In the Gospels, he as-cends immediately. Third, the Holy Spirit is promised and we know that the disciples were filled by the Spirit only 10 days hence. Finally, we see a commission being given to the dis-ciples to be witnesses from Jerusa-lem to the ends of the earth. This is precisely the commission that we, as disciples, operate under. This is the great message of the Acts of the Apostles: that the Spirit is at work not only in the original small group, but in all those baptized, providing a basis for Witnessing. For the earliest disciples, Stephen, James, Peter, Paul and James the Brother of the Lord, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna and countless others, "Witness" meant dying for Christ. We may not be called to the ultimate

act of "Witness," but we are called nevertheless on a daily basis to make the Gospel concrete in our lives.

II. Ephesians, 1:17-23 Another Expression of Commission

We always have to read Scripture carefully. Who is the author speaking of? First, it was generally accepted that God the Father is the source of "Wisdom," and the early Church saw Jesus as the revelation of that Wis-dom in the world. So, the "his" which we read in the first section of this reading refers to "God the Fa-ther." At the time this letter was written, probably some time before the Gospel of John, but after St. Paul's death, God the Father was the agent of Jesus' resurrection, and the agent of Jesus' exaltation. Placing "all things under his feet" is a phrase that appears on Psalm 8, referring to the "Son of Adam," but the author borrows this and refers to Jesus, the "Son of Man." This is consistent with St. Paul's thought expressed in 1 Cor. 15:26. Second, it refers to the Church as the "Body of Christ," a specifically Pauline perception, and one which is consistent with the Wit-ness commission in the First Read-ing. We are Christ in the world. The work of Redemption, inaugurated by Christ on earth, is incomplete. Wit-ness means being Christ in the

world. This is the challenge of being Christian today. Witness means Ac-tion.

III. Mark 16:15-20 Commission and Promises

This reading concludes the Gospel of Mark, and is consistent with the oth-er Gospels in that the disciples are instructed to proclaim the Gospel to "every creature." Here there are promises that are made that ought not to be taken literally. Drinking poison or handling rattlesnakes is a silly way to give "Witness." The chal-lenge is possibly best expressed by Cardinal Roger Mahoney of Los An-geles in the May 4 edition of Origins, published by the Catholic News Ser-vice, where he used a multi-step pro-cess of evaluating real-life situations as follows: 1) See and Understand the concrete area in which we are engaged. 2) Understand that area and Judge it in light of the Gospel. 3) Decide what ought to be done; and 4) Act. Do something. These are the “real signs.” The Spirit is present when these things happen. The sign value of handling a rattlesnake and not getting bitten may be pure dumb luck; but the "sign value" of making the Gospel concrete in our daily lives is perhaps more subtle, but vastly more powerful.

Ascension of Our Lord Sunday, May 13, 2018

Reflections on Scripture Jack Conroy, Ph.D.

Today’s Scripture readings call us to embrace the great reality: God is love. God has loved us eternally. Even when the human family chose to reject God’s love and sinned, God’s eternal love for us sent his Son Jesus among us as expiation for our sins. God’s love does not change; God doesn’t love us because we love him. Je-sus reminds us of this wonderful news in the gospel today: “You are slaves no longer. I call you friends be-cause I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.” Through our baptism into Jesus’ saving death and resurrection, you and I share in the life and love of God. Jesus has made it possible for us to love one an-other as he has loved us. Through the grace of faith, you and I are begotten of God and know God. God gives us the ability to love and he desires us to use that ability for the good of one another. God makes his enduring love surprisingly evident in today’s first reading. When Peter enters the house of Cornelius, a Gentile, the Holy Spirit is poured out on this pagan family even before they are baptized. Peter is shocked that non-Jews are speaking in tongues, but he accepts the wonder of God’s love working in these foreigners and baptizes them in the name of Jesus. Peter is forced to acknowledge that God shows no par-tiality in loving. That will become the practice of the

Church community. We are to love all as Jesus has loved all. There can be no strangers or aliens in our community. We must be open to the many ways that God’s love will manifest itself among us. Sometimes the working of God’s love will surprise us, as it did Peter. Since God’s love is al-ways present among us, we may experience it through the least likely people and situations. You and I are often the unsuspecting channel of God’s love for peo-ple who least expect it from us. When we learn to ac-cept the great mystery of God’s eternal love for each of us, when we make the time each day to allow God’s love to reach deeply within us, when we decide to ex-pect to find God’s love in each person we meet during the day, then we will find ourselves experiencing the great transformation that Jesus has come to make in us. We will learn to treasure being Jesus’ friend and try to be friend to everyone we meet. We will be mindful of St. John’s words: “In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that God has loved us.” It is not that others have loved me first; rather, I have loved them. This is how Jesus has loved us. It is the way that he asks us to love one another. May our God be praised in our efforts to love!

Saint Ann’s Tabernacle Candle

Light of the world

In the month of May

the candle is lit in memory of

Shelley Raley

“I am the Light of the world.” The candle burning outside the tabernacle is a sign of the real sacramen-tal presence of Jesus in our midst. It burns continu-ously to remind us that we are always in God’s pres-ence and that he is always in ours as Light and Peace. Parishioners are invited to contribute to keep-ing this reminder of God’s presence in our midst brightly burning as a memorial to a loved one for a month. The name of those memorialized will be print-ed in the weekly bulletin. The suggested donation is $55.00 for a month. Please contact the parish office for more information or to arrange for a monthly me-morial.

Last 12:15pm Weekday Mass for the season is Friday, May 18th

HELP WANTED - NEW VINCENTIANS

Vincentian volunteers are needed to help our neighbors in need in a new way at the Family Assistance Center (FAC) at 4451 Mercantile, which is where all our charity begins. You will meet and serve a wide variety of neigh-bors in need from across the county in an office setting, while working with a great team of other Vincentians. At the Family Assistance Center, you may be helping neigh-bors in need in ways not done during our standard home visits for financial assistance (rent / utilities). You will be mentored and have access to more resources, experi-enced staff, and other volunteers to assist you. By doing the initial intake procedure, and/or conducting more in-depth fact-finding interviews, you will facilitate the home visits done by other conference members or yourself, and enable more home visits to be done, and to be done more effectively. The rewards will be immeasurable. There may be several ways you can assist. Some possi-bilities are:

• Vincentians who are full-time Naples residents and who can fairly regularly serve one, 4 hour, 9:45am to 1:45pm shift per week. • Vincentians who are full-time Naples residents and who can be available to cover a shift periodically during vacations or illnesses, or every other week. Vincentians interested in doing only data entry, data

quality control, answering phones, filing, etc.

To initiate the registration process, please register on our website at naplesstann.com. You may alternately complete a form and drop it into the collection basket or mail it to the Parish Office. Any usher will be happy to show you where the forms are located. To All Registered Parishioners: Weekly donations are tracked through the envelope system, that is, through your parish registration number. This is one reason we encourage all to register with us regardless of whether you are full-time or seasonal parish-ioners. Please call the parish office if your address changes. This saves us postage and keeps our census up-to-date. It may take up to eight weeks to make changes. Thank you. Electronic Giving: Would you find it helpful to have your donations to Saint Ann Church debited directly from your bank ac-count or credit card as you do with other monthly bills? Saint Ann offers electronic giving for those who wish to have your contribu-tion transferred electronically to the church. If you are a seasonal parishioner, this is particularly helpful in keeping up with your in-tended offerings. Electronic giving makes life easier for you and yields significant benefits for your church. You can sign up for Elec-tronic Giving at any time by completing an authorization form which is available in the parish office.
