The journey of Live Wright has been a really wonderful and rewarding experience, because of working with such dedicated people in our communiti es. I was reminded of this recently when Karen Smith, FACS teacher with Monticello Middle School emailed me to say that she was asked to present about her Farm to School efforts at a National Conference in Orlando! Karen will be attending (all expenses paid trip!) the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Conference in July 2012 to speak with students and teachers about her creation of a Farm to School program that started within the setting of her FACS classroom. On behalf of Live Wright, Congratulations Karen! We are all very proud of your great accomplishments. Let us know how the conference goes and don’t be afraid to put a plug (or 2) in for Live Wright! The Nationally recognized Bike to Work Day

is Friday, May 18

In the Twin Cities, Bike Walk Week is being

celebrated from June 2-10

May is National Bike Month:

Upcoming Events:

The first week in April each year recognizes the work of

Public Health around the country and this year’s National

Public Health Week was April 2—8. In Wright County,

some nurses came up with a great idea to make it a month

long event! Through the Wellness on Wheels (WOW) Van , each week had a special focus on a health topic; Active

Living & Healthy Eating; Communicable Diseases; Alcohol,

Tobacco & Other Drugs; Reproductive & Sexual Health,

Mental and Emotional Well-Being.

We created two handouts for this month that we will be sharing with you at our next CLT meeting;

Farmer’s Markets/Community Supported Agriculture and Active Living Information/Resources. 

Funding News & Opportunities:

USDA Announces Grants for Farmer’s Markets - This grant opportunity is aimed to increased avail-

ability of local agricultural products in communities throughout the country. Grants will be

awarded to market farmers markets, community supported agriculture and road-side stands.

Roadmaps to Health Prizes will award $25,000 to six communities throughout the country to honor

the efforts of communities working on health improvement.

Entries are now being accepted for the Connect for Health Challenge. The Blue Cross Foundation

plans to award up to $500,000 o support efforts to support connections in low-income communities

throughout Minnesota.

Wright County Public Health has applied or will be applying for these grants:

Blue Cross - Strategic Open Streets Event Sponsorship for $8,800 

UCARE Fund—Obesity Prevention. Application will focus on creating a Food Policy Council in

Wright County. Total request will be $50,000
