LJMU guarantees all new International Study Centre students

a place in University-approved student accommodation*.

8The wide range of student housing in Liverpool means

that we can offer you a choice of relatively low cost but

high quality approved student accommodation right in

the heart of Liverpool. Accommodation consists of

individual study bedrooms within shared fl ats where

you will live alongside other new LJMU students. Most

bedrooms also have private en-suite bathrooms.

Accommodation is all self catering and we have

designated accommodation for postgraduate students

requiring quieter study and living environments.

International Study Centre students are usually housed

at the Railyard residence, a few minutes’ walk from the

International Study Centre and just 15-20 minutes

walk from the city centre and the main train station,

Liverpool Lime Street.

The welfare of our students is paramount. Onsite staff

support is provided in all accommodation in addition

to the University-based student support services and

student-elected Hall Reps.

Liverpool Student Homes or LSH is the offi cial student

housing agency set up by LJMU, the University of

Liverpool and Hope University. If you do not want to

live in LJMU-approved student accommodation, LSH

will be able to advise you on the type and availability

of private houses and fl ats which are available

to rent within the city and which are owned by

registered landlords.

The Liverpool Students’ Union (LiverpoolSU) plays a major role

in making LJMU’s international students feel part of the

University community.9

LiverpoolSU recognises that while international students experience many of the same issues that UK students do, they also have different needs, whether due to language or cultural differences or the challenges of living and studying in a new country. That’s why the Union offers a range of dedicated services for international students.

These include an annually elected International Student Delegate and networking events where you can meet other international students, share experiences and fi nd out more about the support and services available both in the Union and in the University. The International Students’ Society also organises a wide range of social activities, including a regular Friday coffee morning.

The Give it a Go calendar of activities, trips and events offers a host of

opportunities for you to try something different, explore the UK safely

The LJMU International Study Centre, based in the heart of Liverpool, provides international and EU students with a direct route onto a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at LJMU.

Successfully completing the International Foundation Year, International Year One Business (CertHE), and International Pre-Masters/Pre-MBA guarantees that you will receive a conditional offer of a degree place at LJMU.

The International Study Centre opened in its current location in September 2011, providing international students with the very latest in learning resources and dedicated support.

All classrooms are fi tted with interactive whiteboards, new computers and comfortable furniture, providing you with a professional learning experience. As well as 10 classrooms, there is a reception area where you can access advice and guidance, a student common room, an open-access IT suite containing 20 fully networked PCs, plus free wireless internet access.

Located in the city’s ‘Knowledge Quarter’, the International Study Centre is very close to LJMU’s £37million Redmonds Building and the Aldham Robarts Library. Nearby are numerous places to eat, drink and relax, including several restaurants and bars on Liverpool’s award-winning Hope Street and Rodney Street, plus cafés in the University’s Art and Design Academy, Redmonds Building and the Liverpool Students’ Union Haigh Building. This winning combination of high quality teaching and social facilities provides the ideal opportunity for international students to achieve their very best.

Access to world-class facilities

All International Study Centre students can use LJMU’s state-of-the-art Libraries and Social Learning Zones, specialist teaching, computing and laboratory facilities and the major libraries in Liverpool. Preparation for yourundergraduate degreeThe International Foundation Year is a three-term programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language training that provides a direct path to degree study. The programme integrates with a variety of degrees at LJMU, preparing you for undergraduate study in subject areas including business, law, management studies, engineering, computing and life sciences.

Study structureYou can choose one of two International Foundation Year routes:

■ Business, Law and Social Studies

■ Engineering, Computing andLife Sciences

You can begin the International Foundation Year in either September or January for degree entry the following September.

Both routes are modular in structure. There are core modules common to each route, and subject-specifi c modules, each carefully designed to focus on the academic areas most useful to your chosen degree.

AssessmentYou will be assessed regularly throughout the programme to ensure that you are on track to achieve the required grades for progression to your degree. You will be monitored through continuous coursework and specifi c assessments at the end of each term or module. You will also be required to complete a series of presentations and extended essays as part of your overall assessment.

English Language Preparation (ELP) Additional English language training is available at the International Study Centre if you need to improve your standard to the required level.

You will need an IELTS of 4.5 (minimum 4.0 in writing) to start the International Foundation Year. If you have an IELTS of 4.0, you can take one term of ELP, starting in either June or September.

You will choose fi ve subject-specifi c modules from below:Core modules

English and Skills for University Study

Over these three modules, you will develop your English communication skills and learn a range of study skills, including: writing and reading strategies, presentation and seminar participation, organisation of time and materials, meeting deadlines and responding to feedback.

When you have completed these modules, you will be able to take notes and write essays in English. You should also have the confi dence to give presentations, answer follow-up questions and contribute to seminar discussions.

Project Study

You will complete a self-study project on a topic agreed in consultation with your tutor from the academic discipline that you will subsequently study at degree level. Completion of this project will also enhance your computer (word processing) skills.

Business Law

You will receive an introduction to the English legal system, business organisations, contract law and consumer protection. companies, manufacturing accounts and interpretation of accounts.

Business Studies

You will develop your understanding of the operational and strategic problems facing business people in the modern market economy. The module will focus on a wide range of issues, such as management, human resource practice, marketing and ethical aspects.

Core Mathematics

You will study algebra and statistics, while developing your knowledge and understanding of mathematical terms and techniques. You will apply these to solving problems, frequently drawn from practical and real life situations.

Economics 1 and 2

In this module, you will look at aggregate demand and aggregate supply, as well as economic policies, infl ation, unemployment, international trade and development economics.

English Legal System

You will learn about the concepts of law, the relationship between law, justice and morality, the sources of law, including British and European Union (EU) legislation and the doctrine of precedent; the Civil and Criminal Courts and the role of the Judiciary.

Financial Accounts

You will learn about double entry bookkeeping, preparation of trial balances, profi t and loss statements, depreciation, limited companies, manufacturing accounts and interpretation of accounts.

Politics

This module provides an introduction to the British political system, the basic principles of the British constitution, civil liberties and their relation to the judicial system; how Parliament works, including the electoral system, political parties and the legislative process; the composition and functions of the Government, the civil service and Britain’s relationship to the EU.

You will be taught formulae, equations and moles, atomic structure, introduction to redox systems, thermodynamics and bonding.

You will look at equilibria, acid-base equilibria, kinetics and organic chemistry.

Further Studies in Biology and

You will look at further studies in genetics, ecology and plant biology plus inorganic chemistry, oxidation/reduction reactions.

Second year entry to BSc (Hons) Business CommunicationsThe International Year One Business (CertHE) is a one year programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language provision that provides a direct path to degree study. The programme prepares you for direct entry onto Year Two of the BSc (Hons) Business Communications degree at LJMU.

Study structureYou will begin the International Year One Business (CertHE) in September for entry to the second year of the BSc (Hons) Business Communications the following September.

The programme is modular in structure. There are fi ve core modules and each is carefully designed to focus on the academic area of your business degree.

AssessmentYou will be assessed regularly throughout the course to ensure that you are on track to achieve the required grades for progression to your degree programme. English and Skills for University

Study

You will develop your English communication skills and learn a range of academic study skills, including writing and reading strategies, presentation and seminar participation, organisation of time and materials, meeting deadlines and responding to feedback. When you have completed this module, you will be able to take notes and write essays with good English. You should also have the confi dence to give presentations, answer follow-up questions and contribute to seminar discussions.

Measuring Your Business

This module aims to develop your skills in fi nancial accounting, as well as providing an understanding of business metrics, business modelling techniques and business markets. You will utilise IT and data information in the analysis and measurement of business processes and functions.

Customer Communications

You will be introduced to the methods for expanding a business through marketing techniques and supporting technologies. This will include the role of marketing and differentiation, acquisition of relevant information and the skills to conduct analysis, e-marketing principles and web development technologies.

Controlling Your Business

This module will provide you with an understanding of management skills through the application of theoretical concepts to practise in the context of managing an organisation in a competitive environment. Topics will include organisational behaviour, management theory, and key themes regarding the role of the manager.

The World of Business

You will gain a comprehensive foundation of theoretical and practical applications relevant to social awareness of the business world. Skills for English

The aim of this module is to develop your English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to an IELTS equivalent of 6.5 and to develop your language, critical evaluation and study skills as appropriate for Masters level study.

Economics and Finance and Investment

You will study a range of topics including investment appraisal and investment risk, portfolio theory and economic and allocative effi ciency. You will apply advanced economic/fi nance and investment techniques to contemporary issues and to be able to critically evaluate arguments, opinions and data within the fi eld.

Business Management

You will look at how to critically analyse key business concepts and discover how these relate to successful business management. You will study a range of business management subjects such as organisational behaviour, leadership and quality management.

Research Methods and Project

You will be taught how to prepare for and complete a research project. The module will enable you to develop a research proposal and utilise quantitative and/or qualitative research methods to complete a short research project of your choice.

MBA in Business ManagementThe MBA is designed to equip managers of the future with the knowledge and skills to make an immediate contribution to an organisation. By adopting an international and multidisciplinary approach to learning, you will graduate with an understanding of the key areas of international business and management, enhanced by the University’s partnerships with major business organisations.

LJMU’s Business School has a well-established international profi le, with long standing partnerships with universities across the world. MSc in International Transport, Trade and LogisticsInternational trade is one of the biggest sectors of the global economy, and it is taking on even greater importance with the development of burgeoning economies, particularly in the Far East, which are increasingly leading the manufacturing sector formerly the preserve of more developed nations. Global trends in the fi eld are moving away from the emphasis being placed simply on transportation, (particularly deep sea shipping) towards a more integrated system of management and communications, which requires a new skills base.

This programme is designed to give you these sought-after skills. It is structured around a series of taught modules, followed by an individual project, which will allow you to carry out an in-depth study on an area of your choice, under Faculty supervision.

MSc in Port ManagementThis degree has been designed with the help of professionals employed by major UK port operators. You will graduate with the skills and expertise required to secure roles in port management worldwide as the programme encompasses container and bulk port operations as well as personnel issues associated with the management of port labour.

Ports are part of the international logistics industry and two modules concentrate on the role of international trade and the logistics sector. Port customers and shipping companies are increasingly rebranding to become ‘globalised logistics’ operations and expect the companies they work with to understand this aspect of their operation. The course will provide you with a rounded view of the management of ports and port terminals, as well as the wider logistics industry.

LLM in International Business Corporate and Finance LawThis LLM is a discrete programme of study focusing on specifi c areas of international business corporate and fi nance law and is approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and Bar Council as an appropriate programme of study for professional development purposes. It is also a stand-alone qualifi cation for those wishing to enhance their career prospects through acquiring vocationally relevant knowledge and skills in this particular fi eld.

Teaching is delivered in the new Redmonds Building and designed specifi cally for those working in the fi eld of law, banking and fi nancial services. This programme examines key legal issues affecting business organisations operating in a global context.

MSc in Maritime OperationsThis programme is designed to meet the ever-changing needs of the maritime industry. It takes a strategic perspective of the industry with particular emphasis placed on the management of ports, shipping operations, maritime law, maritime safety and environmental protection. The programme will furnish you with the skills required to secure positions at the highest level within this ultra-competitive worldwide industry.

Industrial visits are considered an important part of the course and would typically include: Port of Liverpool, insurance underwriters (usually in London), P & I Club and IMO. Specialist industry speakers deliver talks throughout the year along with representatives from professional bodies and other key institutions.

MA in Personnel and Develop-mentThis programme will develop your ability to apply what you learn to your own and other changing work environments, giving you the opportunity to evaluate different approaches to managing human resources. There is an emphasis on the need for human resource professionals to continually develop throughout their career, taking responsibility for what they learn. In addition, you will develop the ability to apply what you learn to different organisational contexts, and to critically evaluate alternative approaches which will add value to a range of business sectors.

Liverpool Lime Street train station is a fi ve minute walk from the International Study Centre and is located right in the city centre. There are frequent train services to Liverpool Airport (up to fi ve services per hour), Manchester Airport, London, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Train travel in the UK is fast and reliable, with London just two hours 20 minutes away and Edinburgh only three and a half hours away.

Liverpool Airport is just seven miles from the city centre and well connected by train. There are direct fl ights to Liverpool from major European airports, including Amsterdam, Madrid and Paris, with onward connections to major international airports.

Manchester Airport is a larger airport and only one hour 15 minutes from Liverpool city centre by train. As well as more than 15 fl ights per day to and from London (a fl ight of approximately one hour), there are frequent European services too. Further afi eld there are direct fl ights to Manchester from Abu Dhabi, Cancún, Doha, Dubai and Lahore, to name just a few.

If you are arriving in the UK by air, you will fi nd that rail provides the most effi cient way of reaching Liverpool. Students can also pre-book a taxi transfer to collect them at the airport for the start of term, when they apply to the International Study Centre.

Liverpool is extremely accessible from almost any location, thanks to excellent transport links by rail, road and air.
