    LJMU guarantees all newInternational Study Centre students

    a place in University-approvedstudent accommodation* .8

    The wide range o student housing in Liverpool means

    that we can oer you a choice o relatively low cost but

    high quality approved student accommodation right in

    the heart o Liverpool. Accommodation consists o

    individual study bedrooms within shared ats where

    you will live alongside other new LJMU students. Most

    bedrooms also have private en-suite bathrooms.

    Accommodation is all sel catering and we have

    designated accommodation or postgraduate students

    requiring quieter study and living environments.

    International Study Centre students are usually housed

    at the Railyard residence, a ew minutes walk rom theInternational Study Centre and just 15-20 minutes

    walk rom the city centre and the main train station,

    Liverpool Lime Street.

    The welare o our students is paramount. Onsite sta

    support is provided in all accommodation in addition

    to the University-based student support ser vices and

    student-elected Hall Reps.

    Liverpool Student Homes or LSH is the ofcial studenthousing agency set up by LJMU, the University o

    Liverpool and Hope University. I you do not want to

    live in LJMU-approved student accommodation, LSH

    will be able to advise you on the type and availability

    The International Study Centre opened in its currentlocation in Septem ber 2011, providing international

    students with the very latest in learning resources

    and dedicated support.

    A ll classrooms are fi tted with interactive

    whiteboards, new computers and comfortable

    furniture, providing you with a professional learning

    experience. A s well as 10 classrooms, there is a

    reception area where you can access advice and

    guidance, a student common room, an open-

    access IT suite containing 20 fully networked P Cs,

    plus free wireless internet access.

    Located in the citys K nowledge Q uarter , the

    International Study Centre is very close to LJM U s37million Redmonds Building and the Aldham

    Robarts Library. N earby are numerous places to

    eat, drink and relax, including several restaurants

    and bars on Liverpools award-winning H ope Street

    and Rodney Street, plus cafs in the U niversitys

    Art and Design Academy, Redmonds Building and

    You should be 17 years or older on

    starting the International Foundation

    Year.

    Preparation for yourundergraduate degree

    The International Foundation Year is a three-

    term programme of academic subjects,

    study skills and English language training

    that provides a direct path to degree

    study. The programme integrates with a

    variety of degrees at LJM U , preparing youfor undergraduate study in subject areas

    including business, law, management

    studies, engineering, computing and life

    sciences.

    Study structure

    You can choose one of two International

    Foundation Year routes:

    Business, Law and Social Studies

    Engineering, C omputing and

    Life Sciences

    You can begin the International Foundation

    Year in either Septem ber or January for

    degree entry the following September.

    Both routes are modular in structure.

    There are core modules common to each

    route, and subject-specifi c modules, each

    carefully designed to focus on the academic

    areas most useful to your chosen degree.

    Assessment

    Y ou wi ll be assessed regularly throughout

    the programme to ensure that you are on

    track to achieve the required grades for

    progression to your degree. Y ou wi ll be

    monitored through continuous coursework

    and specifi c assessments at the end of each

    term or module. You will also be requiredto complete a series of presentations and

    extended essays as part of your overall

    assessment.

    English Language Preparation(ELP)

    A dditional English language training is

    available at the International Study Centre

    if you need to improve your standard to therequired level.

    You will need an IELTS of 4.5 (minimum

    4.0 in writing) to start the International

    Foundation Year. If you have an IELTS of

    4.0, you can take one term of ELP, starting

    in either June or September.

    International Foundation YearBusiness, Law and Social Studies

    You w ill choose five subject-specific m odules from below:Core modules

    English and Skills for University Study

    O ver these three modules, you wi ll develop

    your English comm unication skills and learn

    a range of study skills, including: writingand reading strategies, presentation and

    seminar participation, organisation of time

    and materials, meeting deadlines and

    responding to feedback.

    W hen you have completed these modules,

    you will be able to take notes and write

    essays in English. Y ou should also have the

    confi dence to give presentations, answer

    follow-up questions and contribute to

    seminar discussions.

    Project Study

    You will complete a self-study project on

    a topic agreed in consultation with your

    tutor from the academic discipline that you

    will subsequently study at degree level.

    Completion of this project will also enhance

    your computer (word processing) sk ills.

    Business Law

    You will receive an introduction to

    the English legal system, business

    organisations, contract law and consumerprotection. companies, manufacturing

    accounts and interpretation of accounts.

    Business Studies

    You will develop your understanding of the

    operational and strategic problems facing

    business people in the modern market

    economy. The module will focus on a wide

    range of issues, such as management,human resource practice, marketing and

    ethical aspects.

    Core Mathematics

    You wi ll study algebra and statistics,

    while developing your knowledge and

    understanding of mathematical terms and

    techniques. Y ou will apply these to solving

    problems, frequently drawn from practical

    and real life situations.

    Economics 1 and 2

    In this module, you will look at aggregate

    demand and aggregate supply, as well as

    economic policies, inflation, unemployment,

    international trade and development

    economics.

    English Legal System

    You wi ll learn about the concepts of law,

    the relationship between law, justice and

    morality, the sources of law, includingBritish and European U nion (EU ) legislation

    and the doctrine of precedent; the Civil and

    Criminal Courts and the role of the Judiciary.

    Financial Accounts

    You will learn about double entry

    bookkeeping, preparation of trial balances,

    profi t and loss statements, depreciation,

    limited companies, manufacturing accountsand interpretation of accounts.

    Politics

    This module provides an introduction to the

    British political system, the basic principles

    of the British constitution, civil liberties and

    their relation to the judicial system; how

    Parliament works, including the electoral

    system, political parties and the legislative

    process; the composition and functions

    of the Government, the civil service and

    Britains relationship to the EU .

    Liverpool Lime Street train station is a fi ve

    minute walk from the International Study Centre

    and is located right in the city centre. There are

    frequent train services to Liverpool Airport (up

    to fi ve services per hour), M anchester A irport,

    London, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Train travel in

    the UK is fast and reliable, with London just two

    hours 20 minutes away and Edinburgh only three

    and a half hours away.

    Liverpool Airport is just seven miles from the

    city centre and well connected by train. There are

    direct flights to Liverpool from major Europeanairports, including Amsterdam, M adrid and Paris,

    with onward connections to major international

    airports.

    Manchester Airport is a larger airport and only

    one hour 15 minutes from Liverpool city centre by

    train. A s well as more than 15 flights per day to and

    from London (a flight of approximately one hour),

    there are frequent European services too. Further

    afi eld there are direct flights to M anchester from

    A bu Dhabi, Cancn, Doha, D ubai and Lahore, to

    name just a few.

    If you are arriving in the U K by air, you will fi nd

    that rail provides the most effi cient way of reaching

    Liverpool. Students can also pre-book a taxi transfer

    to collect them at the airport for the start of term,when they apply to the International Study Centre.

    Liverpool is extremely accessible from almost any location, thanksto excellent transport links by rail, road and air.
