The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

A man was sent from God, whose name was John. He came to testify to the light, to prepare a people fit for the Lord.

John 1:6-7; Luke 1:17

From his birth, John the Baptist was “a light to the nations” and one who grew strong in God’s spirit. While John knew he was not the messiah, he also knew that his role was to prepare

people’s hearts for the coming of Christ. In what ways are you, like John the Baptist, “a light for the nations” leading others to Christ? Who are the people in your life that need to be pointed toward Christ?

Do You Have Children Going into

Grades 1-10 in the Fall?

We want to help them grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ!

Enroll your child(ren) in our Religious Education Program! Registration is taking place now through JUNE 30! (After that, late fees apply!)

Classes will start mid-September!

Our world needs more of the Light of Christ! Our staff and volunteer teachers want to help families form strong disciples of Jesus Christ!

Don’t let cost prevent you from enrolling your child – scholarships are available! For more information, call our office at 978-682-9484 or email [email protected].

In the gospel today, Zechariah and Elizabeth name their first born son, John, to the dismay of their

family and friends. This child’s birth was miraculous in this community. Both parents were past child

bearing years and the child’s birth and mission is foretold to his father by the Angel Gabriel within the

holy of holies in the temple.

“Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife Elizabeth will have a son, and you

will name him John. He will be your pride and joy, and many people will be glad that he was born. As

far as the Lord is concerned, he will be a great man. He will never drink wine or any other liquor. He

will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring many people in Israel back to

the Lord their God. He will go ahead of the Lord with the spirit and power that Elijah had. He will

change parents’ attitudes toward their children. He will change disobedient people so that they will

accept the wisdom of those who have God’s approval. In this way he will prepare the people for their

Lord.” Luke 1: 13-17

John in Hebrew means "YAHWEH is gracious.” All that John becomes is set forth in his naming

eight days after his birth. His family raises him in accord with the Angel Gabriel’s prophecy. John’s

mission is wrapped up in his name, in his creation and in his family of origin. He learns and grows

with this mission in mind.

In Baptism, parents are asked, “What is the NAME of your child?” At baptism a child receives their

name in the Church. Their “baptismal name” will identify them. God will call them by their name, like

in our first reading from Isaiah 49:2, “from my Mother’s womb he gave me my name.” This is their

name for all eternity.

Parents determine a child’s name in different ways, for different reasons: after a family member or

saint, or because of the name’s sound, meaning or associations. Whatever the reason, a child’s name

will distinguish them in the family, in society and for all eternity with God. Our name when spoken

grabs our attention and gives us identity.

We begin our prayers and Mass “In the NAME of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” In

the NAME of our God we start prayer, Mass and all good things. Like God’s NAME, our name indi-

cates who we are and who God created us to be.

What does your name stand for? Does your name invoke love, reverence and integrity? Does your

name provide comfort, peace and joy? How will you ‘live your name’?

Your NAME is eternally known and you are loved by God!

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS BRING

LOVE AND JOY!

Last week, several Eucharistic Ministers to the nursing homes and assisted living facilities gathered together to pray, to share their experiences of joys and chal-lenges and to share a meal. It was evident that the Eucharistic Ministers brighten the lives of those they serve by their presence, but especially by presenting Jesus Christ in the Eucharist to them. The residents are filled with joy and love as they welcome Jesus into their beings!

Our team ministers to the 6 local facilities—Ashland Farm, Brightview, Edgewood/Meadows, Prescott House, Spectrum and Sutton Hill, as well as to Mary Immaculate in Lawrence. If you would like to find out more about this life-giving ministry or to our ministries to the homebound or to the hospitals, please contact Trisha Boutilier, our pastoral outreach coordinator, at 978-686-4050 or [email protected].

Children’s Liturgy of the Word:

Sunday, July 8th Our next Children’s Liturgy of the Word

for children in grades 3 and younger will

take place on Sunday, July 8th, at the

9AM Family Mass. After the opening hymn, children

(and parents who wish to accompany their child) will

proceed into the Day Chapel to hear readings and a

homily geared toward our young people to help them

fully engage with the celebration of God’s Word. We

hope you will join us!

Monday, July 9 10am-3pm: Summer Theatre Camp begins! Wednesday, July 25 thru Friday, July 27 the Adoration Chapel will be closed for cleaning.

Please feel free to stop by the Day Chapel for some quiet time those days.

Saturday, August 4 at 7pm in the parish hall, we will host another Saint Michael Coffeehouse! We are looking for those who like to entertain so if you can sing, dance, or do a skit sign up at the pastoral center reception desk.

Sunday, September 9 will hold our Parish Picnic. We once again hope to start with a 12noon Mass on the North Andover Common followed by food, fun, and socializing. If think you might want to volunteer please contact Kim Silk at [email protected] or at 978-686-4050 to make sure you are all set with CORI and Protecting God’s chil-dren requirements.

Wednesday, September 26 from 2-7pm in the parish hall, there will be a Blood Drive in memory of Maureen Staudt. Please mark your calendar and stay tuned for more infor-mation.

When the temperature starts heating up, so does the demand for service vol-unteers. At the Cor Unum

Meal Center at St. Patrick Parish in Lawrence, tens of thousand of men, women, and children will eat free, nutritious meals this summer. Will you consider volun-teering your time at Co Unum? Go to their website at www.corunummealcenter.org to fill out an application or call 978-688-8900.
