St Mary’s Catholic Parish Warwick EMBRACING THE COMMUNITIES OF:
St Mary’s, Warwick, Our Lady of Dolours, Greymare, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Gladfield and
Our Lady of Fatima, Karara
The ancient feast
of the Epiphany
reminds us that
the whole
universe is in God
and that God is in
us. It celebrates
the presence of
God who is
revealed to us in
wondrous ways:
in creation; in our
dreams; in our day to day experience; in our sacred stories. Readiness to
encounter God in these diverse ways has nothing to do with naïve
dependence on our own judgment or on the judgement of others. It has
more to do with a way of being in the world that involves openness to the
unexpected and a critical and careful communal dialogue between our life
experience and our faith tradition. A deep awareness of our place in the
Earth community and kinship with the more-than-human teaches us
respect for all being and respect for the power of God’s Spirit to lead us
beyond ourselves towards a more profound encounter with the divine.
Epiphany has long been associated with the wise ones or astrologers “from
the East” who are led beyond themselves and their immediate location by
the rising of a star. They follow the star that leads them to Bethlehem, to
the new born child, the incarnate Wisdom of God. These strangers are the
first to recognise “God-with-us” in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. They
also come to recognise in a dream the duplicity of Herod, who senses a
threat to his political power from the birth of a new-born king of the Jews.
The story-teller Matthew leaves room in the tableau for the insertion of the
wise ones who will emerge through the ages. There is an invitation for us
to enter into Matthew’s drama, to be the wise ones, to join with people of
different cultures, to engage in our own search for Wisdom, and to follow
the star that leads to truth and lasting peace. There is also an invitation to
be wary of those who find their positions threatened by a different sort of
power, power based on vulnerability and openness to new life.

FOR YOUR AMUSMENT: Some comments made by primary school students regarding
their thoughts on the Bible. (their spelling has not been corrected)
1. In the first book of the Bible, Guinessis, God got tired of creating the world, so he took the
Sabbath off.
2. Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. Noah’s wife was Joan of Ark. Noah built
an ark and the animals came on in pears.
3. Samson was a strongman who let himself be led astray by a jezebel like Delilah.
4. Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the apostles.
5. Moses led the Jew to the Red Sea where they made unleavened bread which is bread with-
out any ingredients.
6.The Egyptians were all drowned in the dessert. Afterwards, Moses went up to Mount
Cyanide to get the ten commandments.
7. The first commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple.
8. Moses died before he ever reached Canada. Then, Joshua led the Hebrews in the Battle of
Geritol.
9. The greatest miracle in the Bible is when Joshua told his son to stand still and he obeyed
him.
10. David was a Hebrew King who was skilled at playing the liar. He fought the Finkelsteins,
a race of people who lived in Biblical times.
First Reading Isaiah 60:1-6 The glory of the Lord shines upon you.
Responsorial Psalm Ps 71:1-2, 7-8, 10-13.R.v.11 Lord, every nation on earth will adore you. Second Reading Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6 The revelation means that pagans now share the same in-heritance, that they are parts of the same body
Gospel Acclamation Mt 2:2 Alleluia, alleluia! We have seen his star in the East; and have come to adore the Lord. Alleluia! Gospel Matthew 2:1-12 We have come from the East to worship the King.

REFLECTION
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
“If you send out negative thoughts, you attract
negative results.”
National Prayer for Drought Eternal God, in wisdom & love You created our
earth to sustain us & give us life. We turn to
You in faith, hope & love, asking You to look
with favour on our drought-stricken land, on
our starving animals, on our failing crops.
Strengthen, sustain & give new heart to our
farmers & all who are affected by drought; be
with those who support them. In Your loving
providence, send abundant rain & restore our
parched earth. Father of all compassion, hear
our prayer, through Jesus Christ Your Son, in
Whom the promise of new life has dawned, &
through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord
the giver of life; Renew the face of the earth.
Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Mary Help of
Christians—Pray for us. St Mary of the Cross
MacKillop—Pray for us. Amen.
THEY OFFERED HIM GIFTS. For some Christians
the feast of Epiphany is the day on which gifts are
exchanged. As we observe the wise men opening
their treasures in today’s Gospel and offering gifts to
Jesus, we can ask: what precious gifts can we offer to
Jesus today? We may not have gold, frankincense
and myrrh but we have our love, our fidelity, our
time. We can give these to Jesus by giving them to
those in need.
Communion/Visits to Aged Care Facilities If
you would like your relative/s, in these facilities, to
receive Communion or be visited by our Parish
Priest/Parishioners, please advise the Parish Office
and arrangements will be made accordingly.
