31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

“A good Catholic meddles in politics.” -Pope Francis

The defining ethos, news cycle, and cultural mentality feels nothing short of toxic right now. It feels toxic because in our country, which stands for “liberty and justice for all,” violence and hatred have taken firm root and dominate our media every single day. This is not politics as usual. This is not governing as usual. And for that reason, I believe that this week’s election is not for casting votes as usual.

The horrific shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh was the single most violent anti-Semitic event in U.S. history. Eleven people lost their lives when they showed up to worship and celebrate a new life at a bris and they were targeted because they were practicing their faith. But they were seen as others long before they were actually killed.

The second incident, in my home state of Kentucky, involved a man attempting to gain entrance into a black church, failing, and instead murdering two African-American shoppers at a local grocery store. According to an eyewitness, the murderer walked past him telling him he wouldn’t shoot him because “whites don’t shoot whites.” As in the synagogue massacre, the members of this community had been othered by nationalists long before they were gunned down at Kroger.

The horror is that these are not the only incidents in our nation even in the last week that are anathema to Catholic social teaching, to the Gospel we proclaim, and to the very person in Jesus Christ that we have staked our own lives on believing.  We also know massive troops are being sent to our borders to keep asylum-seekers away and that bombs are being sent to leaders and media outlets. Our Savior was denounced as other; as dangerous to those in power--not only because of the message he preached of God’s vast love and justice, but because of who he was in the flesh. He too was murdered for whom He worshipped, for his very self, for his message of liberation.

I am not saying we cannot have different political affiliations, vote for different candidates, or even disagree on public policy and yet belong to the same one, holy, Catholic Church. On the contrary, debate and difference keep our community vibrant, help us to work across divides, and encourage healthy discussion. That is all essential! Pope Francis, other religious leaders, and even Jesus Himself meddle in cultural and political issues and provide the model for the rest of us.  Our faith does not change when we leave Mass on Sunday--it must infiltrate every aspect of our lives, including our voting habits. Our Church maintains faith in the individual conscience while also reminding us to keep working for the most vulnerable in society, for a common good which benefits all, and for an end to oppression and violence.

The editors at America magazine, a Catholic and Jesuit weekly, wrote this week:

“We must reject violence. But this is the least that we should do. We must also directly challenge the deranged ideologies that spawn such acts and the toxic political culture in which they find a fertile soil. This means challenging the villainization and marginalization of Jews and other minority groups, which give encouragement, even if unintentionally, to these acts of violent depravity.”

I hope you will join me on voting on Tuesday for whatever candidates you believe best represent those issues and I hope further that as a Church and community of faith, we can do our part in ending violence against those who are targeted for their own worship of God, the color of their skin, or their country of origin.

Mrs. Rachael Czephya From the Desk of Mrs. Izzi

Sunday ~ November 4, 2018

Last weekend children from both the school and parish family joined together to attend our Halloween Trick or Trunk festivities as well as the Middle School Dance. It is with pleasure that I can report that the turnout for these events was excellent. I want to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers who planned the events, especially our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) Board: Ms. Kerri Baccari; Mrs. Rachael Czepyha; Mrs. Beth White, Ms. Jennifer Elliott: and faculty members: Mrs. Sarah Powers, Ms. Naomi Viera, and Mr. Sean McBride. On a daily basis I observe teachers working long hours after school as well as parents volunteering in many capacities. As one example, several parents give up their Saturday morning in order to help out with basketball. It would not be possible for us to offer so many great opportunities for the children of St. Rose without the support of parent volunteers.

This past week we celebrated Mass at SS Rose and Clement Church. As usual our Chorus provided us with beautiful music. As it was All Saints Day, students dressed as Saints and provided us with a biography of the life of each respective Saint. The celebration was both a spiritual and educational experience and was well done.

This weekend after all Masses, we will be selling tickets to our upcoming performance of Lion King Jr. This production will take place on Saturday, November 10th at 7:00pm and Sunday, November 11th at 4:00pm at East Greenwich High School. Tickets may also be purchased at the door! This is sure to be a spectacular performance so please join us for a fun evening out!

This weekend after all Masses we will also be selling memberships for the Eight Month Club! If you prefer to purchase a membership another day, please return the enclosed Eight Month Club Form with payment in the collection basket next week or to the school or parish offices. This is our biggest fundraiser upon which our operational budget depends so I hope we can again count on you for support. Memberships make excellent Christmas gifts and it is not too early to start your holiday shopping. Bi-weekly drawings for cash prizes begin in January! In April as part of the Eight Month Club, we will be having the annual luncheon at Valley Country Club. I look forward to planning this wonderful event with our PTO.

Thank you to all our Faith Formation families that join us for All Saints Mass on November 1st.

Our students did a wonderful job as presenting their Saints to Father Matt and or Parish family. Thank you for taking your time to join us at Mass on a school night.

Our 4th grade will be hosting Children’s Mass today at our 10:30 Mass. It is so wonderful to see our students taking part in our Masses and living their faith.

Our classes started to prepare for our Christmas performance last Sunday during class time. Thank you to Mrs. Kelly Caton for taking her time to help us with this project. The performance will take place on December 16th during normal class time. Families are welcome to invite other family members and friends to. More details to come.

Grades 6-10 will meet today at 3:30 for class time. Please remember 5 pm Mass is part of the class unless you have attended another Mass that weekend. The next non -Sunday event that is required is Confession on November 26th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. If you have any questions about what is required, please see Mrs. Czepyha.

There is no class next weekend as it is Veteran’s Day weekend. We will return to class on November 18th.

Our next JJ Youth Group will take place on November 13th at 5:30 pm in the Youth Group room. We will bake some breads to donate to the Mother Teresa Group and have a Charlie

Brown Thanksgiving of our own! Anyone is welcome to join us in grades 2-5.

For more information please email Mrs. Czepyha at [email protected]
