33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

George and Elaine Walmsley do it all!

“We’re joiners,” Elaine explained. Yet there was a time, she confided, she wouldn’t join a group unless she knew someone in it. “You’d never know I used to be shy. I didn’t talk to anyone.”

“You talked to me,” George piped up.

Having just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, both agree, “come to one of our social functions and see how much fun we’re having!” This is sound advice, from two exceptional individuals who serve as a way of paying God back for all of the friends they are blessed to know.

Elaine

Beginning with the warm welcome she received in 2009, Saints Rose and Clement Parish has felt like home.

Today Elaine wears many hats, serving as lector, Eucharistic minister, as member of the prayer phone line, social committee, parish council, teaching vacation Bible school, and assisting families through the bereavement ministry.

To her surprise, the latter has proved to be very enriching. Although hesitant to become involved in the ministry at first, she discovered her ability to draw people out as they shared about their loved ones and was rewarded with smiles and laughter as she listened to their life stories.

George

There is not a grill or griddle George cannot tame. George started in the kitchen at age five peeling potatoes at Walmsley’s, the family’s fish and chips restaurant. This provided practical experience for his perfect pancakes for which he is known at the annual Pancake Breakfast.

George is content working in the kitchen and derives great joy from seeing others enjoy themselves at an event. “I take pleasure in it.”

To encourage others to serve, George, who is a collector and member of the Social committee, suggests inviting each committee member to bring a friend to the next meeting or event to inspire them to become involved.

Sunday ~ November 18, 2018

Our classes resume this weekend and continue to work on our Christmas presentation with Mrs. Caton. We are also busy putting together our next Children’s Mass that will take place on December 2nd and be hosted by 3rd grade. The children who were chosen to have a part in the Mass were sent home with a slip if for some reason you will not be able to attend please let Mrs. Czepyha know as soon as possible so a replacement can be made.

With Thanksgiving being next week many of our families go away to visit family out of state due to that we will not have Faith Formation on November 25th . Please enjoy the long weekend with your family and may you all be blessed with good food, family and friends to share time with.

Please remember Grades 3-10 are required to attend Confession on November 26th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. You do not have to attend for the whole time you just need to come between the hours of 5:30 to 7:00pm. If you have any questions about this requirement, please see Mrs. Czepyha.

Recently I had the pleasure of chaperoning two field trips. One was with Grades 3, 4, and 5 to a performance put on by the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet. Students had the opportunity to attend a Latin American Show and a Spanish Show with Flamenco at the McVinney Auditorium in Providence. It was a cultural experience. I want to thank our Spanish teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Knowlton-Randall for the time she put into planning this special event. She has done many wonderful things for our Spanish Program; and the opportunity to attend this educational experience is just one of many. In the same week I also chaperoned a field trip with Grades 6, 7, and 8 as they attended a Catholic Middle School Youth Conference. The event featured Tony Melendez, an internationally known artist, with his brother who together share their message of hope, encouragement, and faith. Both of these field trips were not only educational, but also serve as a community builder since multiple classes attended each event along with their teachers.

While we certainly have been busy with field trips and our spectacular performance of Lion King Jr last weekend at St. Rose of Lima School, we always make time to give back to the community! Recently, Mrs. Moretti-Foggo our new Social Studies and Religion Teacher organized a special assembly to honor our Veterans. Students in Grades 3-8 attended this special event and several pupils invited Vets into the school to be recognized for their service. As Veterans’ Day recently passed, I want to thank all of our Veterans for the sacrifices they have given to our country.

Since Thanksgiving is almost upon us, Mrs. Moretti-Foggo also facilitated our annual school food collection! There was a different approach to it this year as students sorted through the collected goods and then assembled the food baskets during their Religion Class. The baskets were then brought over to the parish to give to local families in need. As we are one St. Rose community, it is so nice that both the parish and school contributed to this service during this season of thanks.

As a reminder, school will be closed next Wednesday-Friday for the holiday. I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy time with family; and if you are traveling, I wish you safe travels.

MINISTRY HIGHLIGHT: McAuley House The McAuley House, located at 622 Elmwood Avenue in Providence, was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1975 as a meal site, house of hospitality and outreach center to feed and nurture the homeless and others in need. The Works of Mercy are in

action on a daily basis as nearly 300 people are served there. In addition to meals, outreach workers at the McAuley House help guests with rental assistance, transportation assistance, housing referrals, prescription assistance, personal care items, and clothing. Art classes and afternoon activities are also offered.

The Christian Action Committee (CAC) at St Catherine’s has been supporting the McAuley house for many years. There is a small group of CAC ladies who volunteer every Tuesday; interacting with guests and serving those in need. The CAC also collects baked goods from parishioners once a month to contribute to the meals which are served. Bakers are always welcome! If you would like to help in this effort, contact Sally at [email protected].

There are other ways to get involved at the McAuley House. Volunteers, new/gently-used clothing, and personal care items are always needed. And with the cold winter months ahead, there is a demand for gloves, socks, hats, and scarves. For more information, you can contact Yvette Kenner, Administrator 941-9013 x302.

The Advent Book Club selection is The Long Loneliness by Dorothy Day Discussion will be held Wednesday,

December 19th at 6:30 pm in the Youth Rm

Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, suicide...all topics many people prefer not to discuss...so the heartbreak and stigma continue. Many families struggle with mental health issues, from the mildest to the most serious, often without direction or support. If you have a loved one who may be struggling with mental health issues (diagnosed or undiagnosed) this information session may be a beginning for you.

NAMI-RI (namirhodeisland.org) provides FREE education, support and resources.  Join us Tuesday, November 27 from 7:00-8:00 pm in the McMahon Room for an opportunity to discuss, ask questions and learn from parishioners who have lived experience. Contact Linda or Michael O'Rourke 401-524-3674 for more information or just join us on the 27th.
