Lenten Fast & Abstinence RegulationsChurch Law requires abstinence from meat (for those 14 and older) on Ash Wednesday

and the Fridays of Lent. In addition, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are fast days; those between the ages of 18 and 59 should eat less, that is take no solid foods between

meals and only one meal that day should be a full one. If a medical condition prevents a

person from fasting, then another sacrifice may be substituted.

Please No Flowers in the Church during Lent. Thank you.

Page 3: SAINTS ROSE AND CLEMENT PARISH 111 Long Street, Warwick … · 2019-03-03 · SAINTS ROSE AND CLEMENT PARISH 111 Long Street, Warwick Rhode Island 02886 WEEKEND MASSES Saturday Vigil

Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Ash Wednesday and Beginning of Lent PRAY

• We hope you will enjoy reflections on the daily readings written by your fellow parishioners as a resource for prayer throughout the season. Booklets are free and available in the narthex.

• Join us in prayer for Masses on Ash Wednesday at 7:00 am, 9:00 am, and 7:00 pm and for Stations of the Cross on Friday at 7:00 pm.

FAST • Join the Catholic community around the globe in fasting on Ash Wednesday in so far as you are able, as well as

abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays during Lent. • Think about a habit that is keeping you from being who God created you to be. Consciously fast from that habit for

Lent.

GIVE • Consider new ways of giving this Lenten season, such as joining the Mother Teresa group to serve a community meal on

Tuesday, 3/12 or sorting clothes for the needy in the choir loft on Monday mornings. • Take on a new practice for the next forty days: forty acts of kindness, forty letters or notes to those you love, forty

offerings to the poor.

It’s here!

Ash Wednesday kicks off the Lenten season this week and Christians around the world begin a period of forty days of deepening our spiritual lives through the pillars of praying, fasting, and almsgiving. Besides walking with Jesus in the desert before his Passion, we’re invited to enter deeper into the mysteries of our faith. The idea is that consistent participation in these practices--like exercise we do for our physical health--improves our spiritual well-being by stripping away all that is unnecessary and becoming more mindful of how God is working in our lives.

You’ll see every week how our community is offering opportunities to pray in new and different ways, encouraging one another as we fast from that which separates us from God, and attempting to stretch ourselves to give more of our time, talent, and treasure in stewardship and pursuit of charity and justice.

I’m especially excited to offer the reflection booklet written almost entirely by members of our parish family. The folks that stepped up and offered or agreed to write down their responses to the daily readings of Lent are so varied in age, background, family life, and so many other factors. Editing the booklet was a celebration of our diversity as faith

community and I think those of you that use it as a resource this Lent will see how fruitful sharing our faith with each other can be. A HUGE thank you to those of you that wrote, some apprehensively, and were willing to share yourselves for the sake of the Gospel.

The next couple of months will be bustling around SSRC with Lenten activities and liturgies, receptions for the Diocesan Grateful for God’s Providence campaign, preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion and then Holy Week and the Easter season. As always, I’m so grateful to celebrate all of these manifestations of our faith with all of you and wish you the most blessed Lenten season. May you find abundant faith in new ways these next few weeks and may God continue to surprise you with fidelity, goodness, and beauty through Lent and beyond. -Angie

First Communion families please remember that these dates are coming up fast. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Czepyha. This information is for both our Faith Formation families and our St. Rose of Lima students.

3/11 Banner Night 6pm Church Hall First Communion students & parents

3/23 First Penance 11:00 am Students should arrive by 10:45 am

Congratulations to our Boys’ Junior Basketball Team for completing an undefeated basketball season with a 12-0 record… a spectacular season! I also want to take this opportunity to thank our Athletic Director, Mrs. Beth White, as well as all of our coaches for their time and dedication. Without their willingness to volunteer, none of this would be possible.

Recently the instructional basketball team ended their season by hosting a parent against students’ game. It was an enjoyable family event that was celebrated with pizza and cake afterwards. Thank you, Coach Bailey and Coach Muto, for organizing this special gathering. We are so fortunate at St. Rose to offer so many athletic opportunities for young people: tennis, volleyball, basketball, and track. Coaches and student-athletes save the date for our Athletic Banquet which will take place on Tuesday, June 18th at Valley Country Club at 6:00pm (details to come). Also, as Volleyball season is almost upon us be sure registration paperwork and payment have been returned to the school or parish offices.

With Spring forthcoming, the Eight Month Club luncheon is also not too far away. All members receive a complimentary brunch which will take place on Sunday, April 28th at 12:30pm also at Valley Country Club. Of course, additional tickets for the brunch can always be purchased. Details to come. The Eight Month Club is the school’s largest fundraiser and I want to thank all those parishioners that purchased a membership. With your support funds from this program help keep tuition cost affordable and also allow us to offer so many wonderful opportunities for our pupils. St. Rose has an excellent athletic program but also offers opportunities for students to participate in theater, chorus, band, and many other wonderful co-curricular activities. If you are interested in giving your child(ren) or grandchild(ren) the gift of an academically challenging education in a faith-based environment, please email me at [email protected] or call 739-6937 to set up a time to tour the school .

Lastly, I would like to invite all parishioners to hear several of our students who are playing in the third R. I. Catholic/Private School Honor Band and Honor Strings at URI on Saturday, March 9th at 6 pm. These students working under the direction of Paul Effman Music represent the “best of the best” musicians from our area schools. Four of our students are participating: Joshua French, Jordan French, David Izzi, and Grace Ritchotte.

Our 4th grade is hosting our 10:30 Mass this week so if you see our student greeters please give them a warm welcome. I love seeing our students join us in Mass and share our faith as a community with us all.

Our second graders and their families will be making their banners that will reserve their pews for the day of First Communion on March 11 at 6pm in the Church Hall. If you can not join us please see Mrs. Czepyha so she can give you a kit. The second Graders will be make their First Penance on March 23rd at 11am students should arrive at 10:45 to get settled before the start of the ceremony.

Our Grades 6-10th will meet today March 3rd from 3:30 -5pm with Mass as part of the class. If your student has attended a Mass during the weekend before class, they may be dismissed at 4:45 when we come up for Mass. Please consider joining your student for Mass.

Our Confirmation students will take part in the Rite of Confirmation Mass on March 10th at 10:30 Mass. All confirmation students and their sponsors should arrive by 10:15 to be seated in reserved pews in the front of the church. During the Mass the students and sponsors will announce their commitment to be confirmed into the Catholic Faith.

Date Change: Our K-5 classes will NOT meet on March 10th due to the Blood Drive that will take place in our Church Hall. Please make this change to your calendar.

Attention to all our Confirmation Students!

The Friends of The Warwick Library are looking for help!
