  • MONTAGEDate: 2/15/15

    Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Description:This project demonstrates the skills learned in blending images together in order to create one seamless final image

    Programs & Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:How to manage layers in PhotoshopLearning how to blend and mask several images togetherHow to use appropriate typography

Process:I browsed the internet for pictures that would work well together and also fit the theme of spirituality for the project. I wanted to focus on Gods creations so I decided to work with a night sky to demonstrate the worlds without end. I found two pictures, the one with a starry sky and one with the silhouette of a girl against a sunset, imported them into Photoshop, and used the masking tool in order to put the starry sky over the sunset. I found an appropriate quote to tie the image together and used complementary typography to finish the image.

  • EVENT ADDate:1/31/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Description:A full bleed color event ad created with Microsoft Word and a scanner.

    Programs & Tools:Microsoft Office Word

Objectives:Learn how to scan a high quality imageHow to create a full bleed designHow to use basic design skills in a word processor

Process:I used a Canon scanner to scan in this image of Hozier photographed for Entertainment Weekly. I imported the image into Microsoft Word and used a primary color scheme drawn from the photo in order create unity. There is also contrast from the light blue sky against the dark blue words, and the word Hozier in red pops out in order to draw attention. Hoziers face is also the main focal point of the ad, and your eyes get drawn to the words next to it.

  • LOGOSDate:2/21/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Secion 01Cory Kerr

Description:For this project I created three logos for a fictional company

    Programs & Tools:Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:How to use the basics of Adobe Illustrator

Process:I used Adobe Illustrator to create the three logos. I used rounded rectangles to create the covers of the books and an arched line to create the slope of the pages for each logo. I also used regular lines to create the details of the pages for the last image and the ellipse and rectangle tools to create the glasses above the book. In the second logo I used the ellipse tools to create the quill writing on the book. I also used the brush tool to paint in a bit of detail that I couldnt do with the shape tools.

  • LETTERHEADDate:2/28/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Description:I created stationery for a fictional business with a logo that I designed

    Programs & Tools:Adobe IllustratorAdobe InDesign

Objectives:Design a new logo fitting for a companyDesign proper layouts for stationeryUnderstand the basics of Illustrator and InDesign

Process:I decided to stick with with the fictional business I created for earlier and continue the motif of the quill in one of the logos I created. I wanted to make the quill more geometric and simplistic, so I used triangles and rectangles in Adobe Illustrator. After arranging and warping the shapes how I liked, I used the shape builder to merge the shapes together. I then chose an appropriate color scheme and used the knife tool to split the feather of the quill into two so I could use two different colors in the sections I created. I then imported the logo into Adobe InDesign and added it and the businesses information onto stationery

  • BROCHUREDate:3/28/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Description:I created a tri-fold brochure for the fictional company BoundAHEAD Learning Center

Programs & Tools:Adobe PhotoshopAdobe IllustratorAdobe InDesign

Objectives:Learn how to do proper measurments in InDesignHow to clip images in PhotoshopLearn to wrap text around images.

Process:I used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create this brochure. First, I used Photoshop to clip three of the four images to make them look clean against the fourth image used as the background of the brochure. I then used a couple reference images to create the rabbit logo. I used the Pen Tool and Curved Pen Tool to create the rabbit, and then the Knife Tool to split the image into three to get the three primary colors. I also created the three symbols (the lightbulb, the paint brush, and the plant) in Illustrator as well. When I was satisfied with what I designed, I arranged everything together and added the text in InDesign.

  • FLIERDate:1/25/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Description:This is a black and white flier used to promote a graduate leadership conference

    Programs & Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Use basic InDesign skills to create a simple layoutUse appropriate typographyExpress knowledge in the dsign principles

Process:I first drew out four different sketches and chose the one that I liked best. I then used Adobe InDesign to create the flier. I made sure to have enough white space and not to trap it. I also used the graduation cap and the Vouant logo to help create balance in the flier. I also used repetition with the five diamonds underneath the image, but gave them contrasting colors. I also made sure not to center align the flier.

  • WEB PAGEDate:3/15/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Description:An HTML and CSS webpage I designed to showcase a logo for a fictional business.

    Programs & Tools:Notepad++Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn to export an image as a .pngDesign a webpage using HTML codingAdd different elements using CSS codingIdentify hex colorsExport a folder as a .zip file

Process:I created this webpage solely using HTML and CSS in Notepad ++. It was interesting learning how to manipulate a webpage by just using codeespecially since I had never used code before. I recycled a logo that I had designed for a previous project and used pre-designed HTML and CSS to manipulate to make the webpage unique. After inserting the logo, I added text explaining the process I went through in designing the quill in HTML, and then linked CSS and used it to change the font, background and header colors. I pulled the colors from the logo to link the two together.

  • IMAGINGDate:2/7/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

Description:I demonstrated good photography and photo editing skills. I also added an appropriate color scheme to the image in order to create an 8 1/2 x 11 poster.

    Programs & Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn the basics of photographyImport image into PhotoshopLearn basic editing techniques in PhotoshopCreate a color scheme based on an image

Process:I first took this picture with my Sony A330 camera out by the large silos behind the Rexburg Temple. I chose a monochromatic color scheme that went well with the steely clouds and the blue tinted barn and silo. I then edited the photo in Photoshop and used levels, color balance, sharpness, and vibrance and saturation in order to get the colors that I wanted in the photo. I then used several rectangles to create the stripes below the image and a rounded rectangle to use for the color swatches in the image. I used alignment with the swatches in order for them to line up with the edges of the barn and the silo in order to give it more unity, and also aligned the text with the swatches as well.
