Welcome

Welcome to the April edition of News& Views.

Another month has flown by andEaster is almost upon us. We hopeyou’ve been enjoying the articles byTony King recently, we’ve certainlylearned a few things we didn’t knowabout our area.

This month he tells us about a greatstorm that has received very littlepublicity, even though it must havebeen quite dramatic at the time - seepage 29.

We’ve also received a picture fromHeather Jones of one of their sheepwith her new-born lambs, nothingnew there you might think, but seepage 15 to see why it’s unusual.

If you have any articles of interest orphotographs. Please do send them into us.

Have a lovely Easter.

Best wishesPaul & Siobhan

This was the first meeting for Suzie Moore and Christine Smith in theirnew roles as Chairman and Secretary.

The guest speaker was Iwan Edwards from Opal whose topic was thekey to caring for churchyards and burial sites. There are a number ofongoing projects locally which involve clearing ground in a moretraditional way to allow plants, insects and birds to thrive. The Committee is considering the possibility of toilet and / or kitchenrefurbishment in the Village Hall.

The current kitchen units are largely occupied by quantities of equipmentand food stuffs belonging to groups who use the Hall. Some groups havebeen allocated a storage locker in the downstairs room, the intention beingthe safe storage of group equipment.Should any group still require a locker, Gilly will be happy to allocate oneto your group.

Any articles remaining in the kitchen after April 30th will be removed soplease ensure that your property is correctly stored before this date.Similarly, all unidentified items will be removed from the cupboards andlockers under the stage. This is an attempt to tidy “stuff of ages”!

It is frequently claimed by the morealarmist forecasters that global warmingwill increase the frequency of extremeweather events. So far there has beenlittle evidence for this assertion. Manyextreme weather events have beenexperienced in the UK in the past andsome of the more recent ones have beensummarized in a recent publication *.However, the Great Storm of 1926, whichhad a significant impact on north eastWales, has not achieved attention.

The storm began on Sunday 18th Julyafter a week of oppressive heat and lasteduntil the following day. The effect it hadwas intensified by the fact that it wasvery slow moving. The Times merelynoted that there was heavy rainfall andthat "severe conditions occurred inWales, the north of England and parts ofIreland". Local newspapers rendered afuller account of the events.

Some observers claimed that there wasalmost continuous thunder and lightningfor a period of twelve hours. The thunderwas deafening - there was widespreaddisruption of services in chapels andchurches throughout the area aspreachers could not be heard andcongregations could not hear themselvessing! The lightning involved both forkedand sheet lightning. The former wereresponsible for the deaths of a man andboy near Trawsfynydd and the deaths ofsheep and cattle over a wide area. A manat Summerhill had a narrow escape whenball lightning bounced off a wall, ricocheted across a road and killed twosheep. The pedestrian was about fifteenyards from the trajectory of the lightningbut was stunned and lost the use of his

legs for some time. Lightning alsodamaged telephone wires in theWrexham area.

Considerable damage was caused by hail,or more accurately, by chunks of ice. These were about one and a half incheslong by about three quarters of an inchwide. Many windows were broken over awide area extending from Halkyn toCorwen. In Mold thirteen windows werebroken in the Black Lion Hotel. Closer tohome hundreds of panes were broken inLlanferres, including over fifty in onehouse!

The storm was accompanied by torrentialdownpours. The heaviest rainfall in thearea was at Gyffylliog where 3.06 inchesfell. Many other places had in excess of2.5 inches. The slow movement of thestorm meant that drains could not copewith the downpour and widespreaddamage was done by flooding. At Halkynthe floods were up to two feet deep andfifteen yards of a seven feet high wall wasswept away. In Llanferres the schoolhouse was flooded and "raging torrentscarried stones off the road for miles toLoggerheads, where the full fury of thestorm was experienced."

The storm eventually moved acrossCheshire where it was less fierce. It wasclaimed that it had been the worst stormsince 1872 in north east Wales.

Spring has arrived atlast along with apartial eclipse of theSun.Sadly as you drivearound the country, itis at this time of year

that you notice the amount of litterthat our road side spring flowers haveto compete with. We are becoming anation of litter louts with contributionsfrom all sections of society. As I drovehome from Manchester airport lastmonth the road sides were strewn withlitter and the grass bank of a road thatwent over the motorway looked as if ithad become a council refuse tip. Amarvellous first impression for anyvisitor to the UK.

The Westminster Governmentannounced this week that it cost over800 million pounds a year to clear litterand fly tipped rubbish in Englandalone. It never ceases to amaze me whypeople want to pollute their ownenvironment and then to pay taxes toclear it up afterwards. Why not just givea little bit more thought to what we aredoing with our litter/rubbish and themoney saved could be better spent onthe NHS and other key public services. We should remind people of this facton a regular basis.

Many of you may have heard about theproposed changes at Ysgol Bro Famauwith the Infants being moved toLlanferres and the Juniors toLlanarmon Yn Ial. This will mean abetter use of resources and teachers, less duplication and most importantlyit will help to further improve thestandard of education for our localchildren. It should also help to ensure

the long term security of both sites asthey will no longer be reliant on thenumber of children from one villagealone.

Good news. Mobile Phone receptionwill be improved at the current NotSpot at Loggerheads. New equipmentwill be installed at the Country Parkwhich will boost the signal of mobilephone users. This should cover areasonable radius, include other localbusinesses and help when there is anemergency.

The National Trust have confirmedtheir covenant on the land known asGlan Yr Afon Maeshafn which coversthe west end of the Big Covert and themountain at the rear of Bryn Alyn. There should be no developments, buildings or quarrying within that areawithout the agreement of the NationalTrust.

I have recently had a site meeting withan officer from highways about thejunction by the Valley Lodge Nursinghome. To change the road layoutwould cost a six figure sum but I havesuggested rumble strips as youapproach the junction from Ruthin tomake drivers more aware of the factthat the junction is there. Stop signsmay also be better than Give Way signsas the last accident involved a carwhich did not stop at the junction andwhich then hit a car coming the otherway.

If I can be of any help with any issuesplease give me a call.

Best wishes,Martyn

The Royal Horticultural Societyannounced that this spring is twoweeks later than last year and thisequates to my own impression. By thistime last year I had seen four speciesof butterfly and two of bumblebees butso far I have only seen one bumblebeeand that was this morning. I had alsorecorded the first of the summer birdmigrants, Chiffchaff and Wheatear, but so far I have seen neither but thismay be down to a dearth of southerlywinds.

Before the hedges and trees come intoleaf, and the branches are still bare, isa good time to see where birds nestedlast year. The most obvious are theCorvids- (Rooks, Crows, Ravens andMagpies) always towards the tops oftall trees and all made of twigs or smallbranches. The easiest to identify arethe Rooks, as they nest colonially,Magpies build bulky domed nests withan entrance hole in the side and cansometimes be confused with Squirreldreys but these are of a more untidyconstruction containing leaves andusually close to the tree trunk. Ravenand Crow nests are very similar withthe Raven's being larger but by nowthe Ravens will be incubating eggswhile the Crows will only be building.Lower down, a flimsy flat nest of twigswill probably be the endeavours of aWood Pigeon or Collared Dove, soflimsy in fact that it is sometimespossible to see the two white eggsthrough the bottom of the nest.

In bushes or hedgerows, there mightbe a Goldfinch nest, a small neat cupof grass and wool lined with down orhair, nearly always out on a branchwhere it forks. Or deeper in a bush, neatly woven from grass, camouflagedwith Lichens and lined with hair and

feathers, might be cosseted the nest ofa Chaffinch. A larger construction ofmoss, grass and mud lined with finergrass betrays the achievement of aBlackbird or, if lined with mud, a Songthrush. During my adolescence, astretch of rough hedge would have oneof these nests about every ten metresor so, with Song thrush being the mostfrequent, but now they areuncommon. In those far off days, hedges were only cut every secondyear, or each side in alternative years, but now, annually, farm hedges aremechanically 'thrashed to within aninch of their lives'.

One cannot but notice theproliferation of mole hills in fields androadside verges. The hills are createdby the mole pushing the soil upwardsthrough an already created verticaltunnel and it is claimed that a molecan move more than twice its weight(more than 220grams) in a minute. Ihave been asked why there are somany and the explanation is twofold.During winter, moles burrow deeperto escape the cold and to follow theirmain food source, earth worms, whichalso go deeper. As the soil warms theearth worms come nearer the surfaceand the moles follow. The otherreason is "In the spring a young man'sfancy lightly turns to thoughts of love"(Tennyson's 'Locksley Hall'). Or isthat being anthropomorphic? Many ofthe mole runs are created by malemoles going in search of females, forspring is the mole's breeding season.

A mole has to consume half itsbodyweight of food every day or it willstarve. Although mainlysubterranean, moles do spend timeabove ground but mostly at night, when they are predated by owls but

most mammals find themunpalatable. Their life span seldomexceeds three years.

A local lady telephoned me recently tosay she had a strange bird coming toher bird table and wondered if I couldidentify it. She described it as beinga cross between a male Chaffinch anda Canary. She kindly e-mailed me apicture, taken through the window, and her description was apt. It wasyellowish in appearance with a rufouschest paling towards the belly, abrownish crown and a thick stubbybeak. She noted it had rings on both

legs. I searched my 'Rare Birds' bookbut could not find anything itresembled so suggested she contact theRSPB to see if they could shed any lighton the subject but at the time of writingshe had not had a reply. It is possiblethat it is an escaped cage bird - identityunknown.
