With election fever ‘gripping thenation’ (sorry), we’re bringing you anelection-free magazine to give you awelcome break from it all.
There’s plenty to keep you occupiedin the near future anyway, startingwith ‘Miners Mayhem’ on May 2nd atthe Miner’s Arms in Maeshafn, whichpromises to be a fun day for all thefamily. (See page 17).
There’s also Loggfest coming up inearly June with something foreveryone again this year (see page 12for more details).
Perhaps you could try a new sport -maybe cable wake-boarding, like oneof our local young sportswomen is

LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club
On April 14th Kathy Snodgrass gave an enlightening talk called “TheWrexham Museum”, which, it turned out, was the birth place of theDenbighshire Police Force in the nineteenth century. We learned that itwas necessary to found a headquarters for a force locally and herphotographs of the development of the uniforms were both amusing andinteresting. Kathy herself had been stationed there in the 1970s andwas the first police woman to hold a gun licence in the force.

From the minutes of the meeting held on9th April 2015:- Present: Cllr. DavidJones (Chair), Cllr. John Almond, Cllr.David Twomey, Cllr. Rob Armstrong,Cllr. Margaret Davies, Cllr AdrianWalls, Cllr. Jac Armstrong, Cllr RobJones, the Clerk Mrs Gwyneth Dillonand County Councillor Martyn Holland.
1. Apologies: Cllr. Yvonne FodenMcCorry.
2. Declarations of Interest: Cllr.Margaret Davies declared a personaland prejudicial interest, Cllr. RobJones a personal interest and Cllr.Adrian Walls a personal interest inplanning application No 21/2015/0213. All signed the record book.
3. Meeting open to the public for tenminutes: No matters raised.
4. County Councillors report: CountyCouncillor Martyn Holland reportedthat 1) The Welsh Government wereconsidering changes to planningregulations in relation to buildings inwoodland, such as Big Covert, andadjustments may be made to the Billwhereby planning permission would berequired for any buildings in woodland.2) When the school was holding specialevents, the hard play area could beused for car parking to preventnuisance to local residents. 3) Thereshould be improvements to mobilephone coverage at Loggerheads whenextra antennae are fitted to somebuildings in the Country Park. 4) Newbus timetables are available. Therehave been some changes but only oneservice has been lost. 5) The CountyCouncil is looking at its building stockto see if ownership or usage can bereduced. Any money raised from thesale of Capital Assets can only be usedfor Capital projects or reducing theCounty's debts. 6) The other localCommunity Councils are keen to co-operate in drawing up a list of suitable
contractors that the Councils can use.7) He has asked the HighwaysDepartment if they can fill the potholes in Pen y Waen as a temporarysafety measure until the road isresurfaced. 8) The schools atLlanferres and Llanarmon are to bereorganised so that the infant classeswill be at Llanferres and the olderchildren will go to Llanarmon, for atrial period of one year.
5. Minutes of previous Meeting: Theminutes of the Meeting held onThursday 12th March 2015 were signedas a true record after someamendments were agreed.
6. Matters Arising: No matters wereraised.

8. Maintenance in the Community: Nomatters raised at this time.

'No Cold Calling' Areas: Theestablishment of a 'No Cold Calling'area was discussed but as Councillorsare not aware of any problems in thisfield it was agreed to postpone anydecision but would like to hear fromanybody who has experienced anydifficulty with 'Cold Callers'. 10. Red Telephone Kiosk: Waiting for aresponse from Mr David Shiel.

WHIST EVENINGS Our Easter themed whist evening was the last until we recommence inSeptember. The braver members entered the Easter Bonnet comp. andthe winners were Mal Bellis and Noel Headley who managed to make abonnet out of a stuffed toy rabbit. ‘Cable wakeboarding’ is one of the fastest growing watersports in the UK. Basically it involves being towed along by a
cable on a short board (bit like a snowboard!) and hitting lotsof obstacles like ‘kickers’ (ramps) and rails and doing lots ofcool tricks, grabbing the board while you are doing it!
The roots of the sport lie in waterskiing, whichtransferred to wakeboarding behind a boat and jumping
off the wake created by the boat.Recently the development of the sport has
been to build cable parks in major cities like Liverpool,which has made the sport much more accessible toeveryone.
Local Llanferres girl, Jessica Lovell (15) has been cablewakeboarding since August 2013, having learnt to

wakeboard behind her Dad’s boat. In October that year she won her firstcompetition as a ‘rookie’ in Liverpool and last year (2014) started competingon a more regular basis, competing in the Ladies Open category. At the end oflast year she came 2nd in the Northern region and came 2nd overall in the UK onthe Grass Roots Tour, competing against women from around the country!
Below left is Jess on the podium having won the Scottish competition in 2014and also a few pictures of her riding at Liverpool in a competition.In April Jess was really pleased to be chosen to receive training from CK
Koester, a professional wakeboarder, who is also the coach –she spent 4 days being coached by him along with another 4 riders, finetuning their tricks and learning a few new ones!

Local News
The picturesque setting of the bridgeover the River Alyn (Pont-y-mwynwr),the adjacent ford and Erw Olchfa hasattracted many artists over the pastyears. Some 30 years ago this rural scenewas under threat.Lead mining probably started inMaeshafn around 1640. Shortlyafterwards a footbridge was erectedacross the River Alyn to provide aconvenient route for miners living westof the river. According to theChurchwardens' Accounts the bridge wasmaintained by the parish until thecreation of Ruthin Rural District Councilin 1894.At the beginning of the twentiethcentury a demand arose for a road bridgeand a single track bridge was erected in1909 by the District Council. This wassubsequently strengthened in the 1930sto take the weight of the then currenttraffic.Eventually the supporting iron girdersstarted to corrode and the safe weightlimit for traffic was progressively lowereduntil in 1984 it was only 3 tonnes.By now the Clwyd County Council wasresponsible for the bridge. The CountySurveyor and Bridgemaster decided thatthe bridge should be replaced andordered design work to go ahead. Thedesign was presented to the CountyCouncil Highways Committee in 1985and was approved. The design was nowavailable for inspection by the public andit created an uproar.The proposal was for a 23 feet widebridge with an 18 feet wide carriageway.To put this in perspective the lane east ofthe bridge was only 7 feet wide for aconsiderable length. Furthermore thePont-y-cacwm bridge on the A494 Trunk
Road was only 20 feet 6 inches wide.Many residents were concerned aboutthe implications of the proposal as if itwere to be approved there could bepressure for proportionate widening ofthe lane up to Maeshafn resulting in itsuse by heavy traffic. (At that time boththe Aberduna and Burley Hill limestonequarries were very active and thequarrying of Moel Findeg still remaineda possibility.)The only way to halt the project was topersuade the senior Committee(Highways, Planning andTransportation) to refer it back to theHighways Committee with arecommendation for a more modestproposal. Opposition to the proposals wasably co-ordinated by Pat Cass, thesecretary of the Maeshafn and DistrictRural Association. Our MP, CountyCouncillors and the press were lobbiedvigorously.The main objections were - it was out ofkeeping with its environment (theClwydian Range AONB had not beendesignated at that time); it was anunnecessary and wasteful use ofresources; the possible effect of heavytraffic on the village of Maeshafn and thefact it was apparently in conflict with twoof the County Structure Plan policies.Pressure was kept on the CountyCouncillors by local residents attendingthe HPT Committee Meeting asobservers. Success! The matter wasreferred back to the HighwaysCommittee and eventually a moremodest structure was approved in 1986and the present bridge was built in 1988.

The Spring weatherhas been perfect thisyear for our farmersas far as the lambingseason is concernedand it is great to seeso many new lambs
in our surrounding countryside. It isalso now the time to remind everyonethat all dogs should be kept on a leadwhen walking through any fields wherelivestock are present. Most of us feelthat we have our dogs under controlbut sadly the sheep do not always seeit that way and many lambs are lostafter sheep abort them through panicand stress.
I had asked the County to fill in the potholes on Pen Y Waen which has nowbeen done. This is a temporarymeasure because, as already reported,the road will be resurfaced in this newfinancial year. I am also pleased toreport that the B5430 from the ValleyLodge Junction to the A494 will beclosed for road resurfacing work fromthe 27th to the 30th April and that thecounty has agreed to place rumblestrips as you approach this badjunction by the nursing home.
Sadly we have once again had anumber of break ins in the area withsheds and outbuildings being targetedin both Maeshafn and Llandegla. Asmentioned before you can get advicefrom North Wales police about how toprotect your outbuildings with alarmsand security lighting but moreimportantly we all need to beobservant and report any suspiciousactivity or vehicles in our area.
The county is still trying to find afurther six million in savings for thenext financial year, and as part of theongoing review we are looking toreduce the number of properties weown and use. Staff have already beenrelocated from the property in front ofthe Gaol in Clwyd Street Ruthin whichis now empty and we are looking toreduce the number of buildings we usein Rhyl.
Sadly money raised from capital salessuch as buildings and land cannot beused to fund services, but it can beused for other capital projects. Thisreduces the need for additionalborrowing and can be used to pay offsome existing borrowing. As interestpayments form part of the annualbudget, any reduction in borrowingwill help to go towards the six millionwe need to find. On top of this we canalso save on the running costs, whichwill go towards our budget savings aswell.
Most of our Rural bus services areheavily subsidised and I was concernedthat we would lose a number of ourroutes across this ward as part of thebus service review. In the end we cameoff relatively lightly compared withother areas and we have gained anadditional late service for Maeshafnand Eryrys/Graianrhyd. There is still anissue with picking up passengers inTafarn Y Gelyn and I am still indiscussions with the County over thatservice.
I believe that the fact that so many ofyou attended the consultation eventshelped our cause immensely but sadlyalthough this particular battle may

However, with an almost predictableinevitability (also known as 'Sods law',)by the time the magazine wasdistributed bumblebees were frequentand butterflies had appeared fromhibernation. By Easter Week I had seenfour species of bumblebee and four ofbutterfly, now increased to five with myfirst sighting of that harbinger of springthe Orange tip butterfly, usually the firstbutterfly that does not overwinter as anadult to appear. The weather warmedand the woodland floor became akaleidoscope of colour as Violets,Celandines, Wood anemones, Primroses,Speedwells, Bluebells and others rushedto flower and set seed before the treecanopy develops and cuts out the light.
With the advent of southerly winds thespring bird migrants arrived. By 5thApril the onomatopoeic calls ofChiffchaffs could be heard and theWheatears were on the moors. On 8th Isaw Herons feeding two week old,reptilian looking, chicks at Ellesmerewhere there are 12 nests, down from 15last year. At Colemere I watched Sandmartins hawking for insects over thelake and listened to the warbling song ofa Blackcap. At the nearby Wood Lanereserve (accessed only with a permit andcode number to enter the hides) Irecorded 18 species of birds includingSnipe, Oystercatcher and CommonSandpiper in a stay of about 20 minutes,but two 'birders' had logged over 30species that morning including migrantsSand martin, House martin, Swallow,Little ringed plover, Little stint andOsprey. A Swallow was reported to me
having been seen in Ruthin on 10th butI had to wait until the 15th to see myfirst locally, along with Willow Warblerand Blackcap.
A Hawthorn tree at Colmere hostsMistletoe which I first saw there about40 years ago. Then it was just a singleclump but now the tree is heavilyburdened with this parasitic plant whichis almost covering the tree. I wonderhow many of the day trippers walkingpast realise that it is there. .Mistletoegrows on many species of tree withcultivated Apple (but not wild apple)being the most common followed byLime, Poplar and Hawthorn. In theCotswolds recently, we noted tall Poplartrees festooned with Mistletoe.
A Bee fly (Bombylius major) attractedmy attention. This large, hairy, ginger-coloured fly resembles a smallBumblebee with a long proboscis givingit a somewhat fearsome appearance butit is harmless. If it had a sting it wouldbe at the other end. The colouration andgeneral appearance mimics that of aBumblebee to act as a deterrent topredators and is known as aposematism.The Bee fly is a valuable pollinator as itprobes flowers for nectar, hovering infront of the flower rather like a tinyHumming Bird, except it holds onto theflower with its front legs, Primrosesbeing a particular favourite. It lays itseggs in flight and flicks them towardsthe nests of solitary bees and wasps.When they hatch, the emerging grubsenter the nests and feed on the storedfood of the host insects and even on theirlarvae.
