L.Mandelli CSN1 Trieste 20 Settembre 06 2NB: It’s the first cryogenic magnet operated underground at LHC !
Central Solenoid
All cryogenic and control connections done.
Cooled down first at 75K with shield refrigerator and after at 4K with the main refrigerator (17/23 May- 5 days)
Preliminary exitation tets done in July at 1kA (0.26T))
After closing the EC ( 26 July) the solenoid was excited in steps up to the nominal I=7330 A (2T)A limit of 8 kA was reached followed by a Slow Dump (discharge on the RDU without quench)
The Field Mapping followed in August (2-8/08)
The solenoid is commissioned

Solenoid Field Mapping
oThe field is mainly due to the coil. The effect of the Tile Cal iron is of the order of 4.5% and slowly varying with z
oThe tracker need a precision of 5 10-4 on the bending power requiring a precision of 10 G on the field
oTwo arms at 90° rotating and moving in z bring 48 Hall probes
o4 NMR probes are fixed on the warm wall of the cryostat for permanent monitor (BT field)
o181 (z) X 16(phi) x 48 = 139k meas ( 6/dm3 + special runs (middle and end) + runs at 5kA,7kA and 7.85kA

• The mapping campaign worked very well, in all together 50 hours the magnetic field was measured on 250.000 points inside the solenoid volume (4 different current values)
• Dispersion of measurments is of few Gauss
• Furthermore results are compared with models of coils + magnetized iron
• Preliminary results with an idealised coil gives already agreement < 20G
• The aim to deliver a field map of the ATLAS solenoid with an absolute precision of 5 10-4
will certainly be reached after an extensive analysis of the data

ECT-A Status July
• Story• Design and engineering by RAL• Vessel and cold mass contracted
by Nikhef• The firm in charged failed• Peaces at CERN in 04 with 2 years
delay
At present cold mass inserted in vacuum vessel.
• Next: transfer load on vessel, Complete mechanics and cryo (turret & services, thermal shield on end plate, JT shielding)
• Close and vacuum test• Test at 80K in front of B180• Transport and lower in cavern
middle Sept. An adventure in itself !
• Many unknown. Critical. If delay Big Wheel-A will delay
L.Mandelli CSN1 Trieste 20 Settembre 06 10
End Cap Toroid A- 2 Severe proble found in the engeeniring
of the mechanics which trasfers the forces acting on the cold mass to the cryostat
ECT cold mass is pulled into the BT with ~260 tons taken by 16 tie rods that transfer load to the vessel and then to the 8 BT vessels trough the 8 AFT connection points
Design assumed infinite stiffness of vessel during integration and 0.5mm tolerances. Impossible to align and furthermore they would brake!
Redesign to make them adjustable after closing, transport, cooling down in cavern
Bring the AFT connections through the end plate to the outside, 32 new feed-troughs
Problem solved, But takes time…….
Tie rods

ECT – New Schedule
ECT-AECT-A• Closing vessel Oct-Dec 06• Vacuum test during X-mass• Transport to 80K test (outside B180) on 1 Feb• Transport to point 1 in March 07. Connections in cavern Mar-Jun 07
Details of installation, shield & muon chambers to be studied
ECT-CECT-C• Cold mass ready by Dec 06 in B191; vessel opening can not be done
before ECT-A is out of B191• Cryostat integration Feb-Apr 07• Vacuum test and preparations for transport May 07• 80K test in May-June• Transport to point 1 by end of Jun 07
• This totally upset the Mu-EC assembly. New planning under study

Status of Barrel chamber installation• 424 out of 656 barrel chambers
installed
• -> 65% . It was foreseen 72% end of August
• Main problem has been either access and crane availability or the actual installation of the chambers on the rails than the chamber availability.
• Lot of problems inside the detector when moving the chambers to their final positions: services out of envelope, poor access, scaffolding in front of the chambers, etc.
• During the last two months an average rate of 3.5 chambers per day was reached.
• RPC BOL completed- About 10 BML remain to be retrofitted

HLT/DAQ – Where we are
All Read-Out System (ROS) bought and in advanced phase of installation and commissioning
Purchasing of other components in an advanced state taking into account the new LHC schedule ( in particular LV2 and EF farm)
Pre-Serie (10%) installed and very useful for debugging and understanding the system the Algoritms to be used and a realistic trigger Menu
Continous interactions with SW, Performance and Physics Groups needed- Trigger& Physics Weeks very useful- CSC notes will contain detailed trigger simulation
L.Mandelli CSN1 Trieste 20 Settembre 06 32
SW and Computing seen from farSw and computing will be a major effort toward Data Taking
complementary to the Detector CommissioningThe present line of activity is:1- Simulate O(20M) events with the “ as installed misaligned/miscalibrated
geometry “. To:- Prepare the CSC notes equivalent to revising/updating the Physics TDR. Step one will use a “ as installed detector with known distortions/miscalibrations.- Calibration Data Challenge (CDC) exercise to demonstrate the capabilty to calibrate/align the detector and understand systematic effects ( B-field, materials etc.)
2- Before start of data taking try “ Dress Reharsal Exercise” O(10M) to : Simulate a data stream as from the EF to completely exercise the full chain of distributed analysis ( data streaming- calibrations-Tier1-Tier2- ESD-AOD etc) Very ambitous !
3- Stress the distributed computing infrastructure and gradually bring it towards the 40Hz goal. Will require more simulations. Useful also for particular physics channels
NB. At 200 Hz 10M events will be collected in 1d (5 104s). 2M to be simulated
L.Mandelli CSN1 Trieste 20 Settembre 06 33

It’s difficult to summarise the very intense effort which is going on in preparing to data analyses. On a short range the main activity will concentrate on the mentioned CSC notes( 82 ). The italian community is very active as shown by the number of notes with italian editors. To this of course one has to add a rilevant number of contributions to the other notes

Atlas Comments on the new LHC machine schedule
The presented ATLAS schedule V8.0 fits the new schedule presented at the SPC and CERN Council which foresees the beam pipe closure at the end of August 07 with the following remark:
The schedule strategy should be such that the useful integrated luminosity at 14 TeV at the end of 2008 will be maximized (1-3fb-1 ??).
Primarily the run in 2007 will be a detector and computing commissioning run, and not a physics run
L.Mandelli CSN1 Trieste 20 Settembre 06 35
L.Mandelli CSN1 Trieste 20 Settembre 06 36
Overall financial situation
ATLAS construction budget initial MoU 1995475 MCHF
Updated baseline contributions 468 MCHF
Cost-to-Completion (CtC) evaluation for the initial detector 68 MCHF
Main funding issues today
There are remaining outstanding contributions to the baselineCommon Fund (Russia; JINR;Canada;...) 9 MCHF
Pledged CTC contributions 62.7 MCHF. Missing 5.3 MCHF (NB: Situation only looks rather good due to 5 MCHF more given by CERN; Missing pledged contribution from USA; Russia...)
L.Mandelli CSN1 Trieste 20 Settembre 06 37
Unfortunately as already warned at the April 2006 RRB there are new extra cost for a total of 4.4 MCHF.
CB chair ha nominated an audit Committee ( Bethke; Mandelli; Oram) who looked into the overcosts (report available)

Further delays in installation work beyond August 2007 could require additional resources for manpower to be paid.
L.Mandelli CSN1 Trieste 20 Settembre 06 38
What to do:
Make all efforts such that all FAs would provide the full approved contributions (baseline + CtC). There are indications that about 50% of the baseline missing contributions could be recovered.
Otherwise:
Extend the Institute fees (12.5kCHF/y) up to three years
Atlas will present the situation at the October RRB and will ask for a decision at the April one
OTSMOU
– Last but not least. A group is working to define in details all the tasks needed to operate and mantain ATLAS, to study a mechanism to share the duties and costs between the agencies and to understand the implications with the M&O.

Conclusioni
ATLAS sta andando bene.
