Selfunloadingcement carriers need noshore based ship unload-ing equipment and havea totally enclosed cargohandling system, usinga fluidizing system in thecargo holds for cementunloading. Up to now,the world fleet comprisesabout 300 units between1,000 dwt and 60,000 dwtfor seaborne cementtransportation. Additio-nally, about 200 unitsexist in the

    Fluidizingcargo holds

    The sloped bottoms ofthe cargo holds arecovered with fluidizingpanels. Rotary pistonblowers supply the com-pressed air oil-free tofluidize the cementabove the panels so thatthe cement can flow tothe lowest point, wherethe discharge gate isinstalled. The dischargerate is adjusted by anIBAU FLOW CONTROLGATE.

    The midship tunnel sys-tem is dividing the cargoholds into a portside andstarboard compartment.The IBAU pumps androtary piston blowersare placed in the midshiptunnel. The midshiptunnel eliminates anadditional bottom-to-deck hold for thedischarge equipment.

    IBAU HAMBURGnew self-dischargingtechnology

    Advanced self-unloadersin the 1,000 dwt to60,000 dwt range areequipped with fluidisationsystems in the cargo holds.

    The systems can beinstalled in new ships andconversions within threemonths. They can beadapted to the differentship sizes and differenttypes of cement, fly ashor similar materials.

    Unique in the IBAU con-cept is the space-savingmidship tunnel design thatintegrates the dischargeequipment and divides theholds into a portside andstarboard compartment.

    The midship tunneleliminates an additionalbottom-to-deck hold forthe discharge equipment.

    The fluidisation systemcomprises inclined aera-tion panels, which coverthe complete hold bottom.Cement flows to thelowest points in the holds,where IBAU flow controlgates are installed, whichallow an adjustableand computerized flow.

    For transporting thecement from the holds tothe shore terminal,specially designed screwpumps are used, whichhave a very low feedpoint and allow a lateralfeed from the left andright hand side. Eachpump transports up to350 t/h cement. Convey-ing distances of more than600 m can be achieved.

    When different cementtypes such as white andgrey cement have to betransported one afteranother with the samecement tanker a 100 %cement reclaim from thecargo holds is required.The innovative IBAUvacuum cleaner assiststhe reclaiming process, tomake a 100 % cementreclaiming rate possible.

    The cargo holds areequipped with dockingstations for the mechani-cal cleaner, which directsthe remaining cementbetween aeration panelsinto the bin of an IBAUpump. Particle separationis effected in the pumpfilter and no additionalcement transportationequipment is needed.

    How it works:Cement Carrierloading / unloadingThe self-unloader isloaded and unloaded inthe most flexible andsimple way by means ofIBAU pumps.

    To achieve unloadingrates of up to 1,200 t/h,four IBAU pumps can beused in parallel. Thepumps are supplied withoil-free conveying air byscrew compressors, whichare located in deck hous-es, together with thefiltering equipment.

    For direct loading withhigh capacities againIBAU screw pumps areused, which pneumatical-ly convey the cementthrough one or morepipelines directly into the

    cargo holds. Flexiblehoses for the connectionof the shore and shippipes are carried by anon-board crane. Loadinglines on deck are quippedwith motor actuatedIBAU two-way valvesfor directing the cementinto the selected holds.

    The required compressedair is generated by thecompressors on board.For cement distributionon deck from a centralreceiving bin either fluid-slides or horizontal screwscan be used. IBAU fluid-slides are used for capaci-ties up to 1,200 t/h, whileIBAU screw conveyorsare recommended forcapacities up to 500 t/h.Such systems are verycommon if a mechanicalship loader is used.

    For highest reliability,cement loading andreclaiming for the self-unloader can be com-pletely automated andcomputer controlled.During loading, cement isautomatically directedinto the holds, while theship is balanced.

    Unloading rates can bepre-selected and the oper-ator gets informationabout any hold and dis-charge equipment at anytime. IBAU HAMBURGcan fit the computersystems with latest state-of-the-art technology toensure highest recoveryfrom the cargo holds withthe shortest berthing timein the port.

    Feeding of IBAU pump

    Why IBAU pumps work better:The IBAU pump is the only directunloading solution that does not needany intermediate transport and the spacerequirement in the ship hold is verylow. Vacuum systems as well as screwsystems mainly are combined with pres-sure vessel conveying for ship to shoretransport. The capacity range of IBAUpumps installed in parallel is as high aswith the most advanced screw conveyorsystems. The conveying distance can beup to 600 m, which covers the knownterminal requirements.

    The specific power consumption that isrequired for an IBAU pump is not hig-her than for a combined vacuum / pres-sure vessel system and only slightlyabove screw systems for medium andlong distance transports. Another strongpoint of the IBAU pump is the adapta-bility to latest automation requirements.When screw conveying systems arecombined with IBAU pumps some spe-cial advantages are received compared tothe vacuum / pressure vessel solution,such as lower energy requirements andthe long conveying distance.

    ConclusionThe concepts of IBAU HAMBURG aredriven by the market needs. Conver-sions have to become operational withinthree months. Advanced systems haveto fit to the terminal facilities andrequire high loading / unloading rates upto 1,200 t/h. These can very effectivelybe met with the IBAU pump system,which fulfills the most stringent systemrequirements. The direct loading / unloa-ding mode requires no intermediatetransport and transfer points as it isnecessary with vacuum / pressure vesselsystems. Another major advantage isthe possible long conveying distanceand the possible complete automation.The system can also be adapted tocement tankers, which alternativelytransport different cement types. IBAUHAMBURG has an intensive projectexperience. For smaller ship sizes suchas river barges also mechanical screwconveyors are economical.
