Local communities far and wide have too long suffered the harmful effect of out of town retail & online shopping. Yet there are independent businesses that have spotted an opportunity to step into the gap. Pixie is now launching all across the UK and inviting the talented and entrepreneurial individuals that own these businesses to work with us to create a more local world.

...One community at a time.

All across the UK communities are increasingly defined by their cool cafes and restaurants, boutique hotels, and the town’s broader mix of independent businesses. So, when a new venture comes along that is passionate about its desire to contribute to the community’s financial stability, which can actively promote those independent businesses epitomising its unique personality, and also seeks to sustain a movement that works at this local level, it becomes genuinely difficult to not take an interest. But, who better to comment on the benefits of the Pixie platform, than the owners of independent businesses already using it.

Explore, discover, experience... Running an independent business is hard work, a full time job, and it can feel like an uphill struggle to promote yourself up against all of the high street brands that you have to compete with. Yet there are shoppers out there, residents and visitors alike, who are eager to explore and discover the very best a local community can offer. Not only can Pixie bring them to your door, it can even incentivise them to shop with you too.

Having Pixie promoting my business through their regular campaigns and through my profile in the app’s Discovery guide has given me a promotional channel that I wouldn’t have had time for and may not have been able to afford. It’s also clear that many of my customers think that contributing to the local community is important, and are going out of their way to express an interest in also supporting Pixie’s launch.”George WhiteBrewed BoyCraft Beer Bar, Frome

With each new month on the platform we find that more and more Bath residents, as well as visitors from further afield, discover us through the Pixie app. There’s a real sense that we are being supported in our quest to pull back a percentage of business from those faceless online retailers which threaten to destroy our communities.”Olivia Brewer & Nik BlakeFoundFashion, Furnishings & Eclectables. I was unsure at first, but the Pixie team’s all-too-evident passion for local communities and independent businesses has swayed me to support their vision. The fact that the app now directs new customers to me every single week has been an unexpected bonus.”Jane WoodOliver’s Coffee HouseCafe, Sherborne

Like many Bath indies we’re a bit off the beaten track. We’re a unique business in a buzzing area, but we battle to draw customers away from chainstores. We also have to build a sustainable base and to look after customers once we win them. We investigated many reward schemes but, as a business trading on low margins, nothing was workable until Pixie arrived. The Discovery guides in its app clearly boost the numbers visiting us, it removes the workload of running a loyalty scheme and it’s gratifying to know that Pixie is returning the funds to our own community.”Daniel McCabeMagalleria Magazine Store, Bath

Loyalty & the local economy Pixie accesses that market that wants to do everything through its phone and is extremely easy to use. But it’s Pixie’s commitment to independent businesses and a loyalty scheme that keeps monies within local communities that makes it so much more than a payment platform.

I think the loyalty scheme a great idea, really clever and really compelling. It excites me – it certainly seems to excite my customers – that there is a reward for customers making payments to local businesses through the Pixie app, and that these loyalty points can be used to instantly top up cash in the app for more purchases; cash that is also being kept within the local economy.”Adrian Campbell-HowardSociety CafeCafe, Bath, Bristol & Oxford

Being able to incentivise my customers to download and use the Pixie app – explaining that there’s a £5.00 contribution to their purchase when they do so – also serves to assist me in maintaining the ongoing dialogue I am keen to have with them. The fact that they can spend that £5.00 in my own independent business is of course an added bonus.”Peter MiltonLarkhall ButchersButchers & Game Merchant, Bath

Having previously only encountered Pixie in cafes and bars, I had already found myself impressed with how easy it was to make quick low value payments; and I appreciated too the extent to which Pixie’s loyalty points could serve to bind a customer to a business and keep monies within the local economy. So, when I signed up I expected it to be used in my business for similarly low cost purchases, but was stunned to see transactions for hundreds of pounds go through the app on the very first day.”Anthony HickAssembly Men’s Fashion Retailer, Frome

I’ve encouraged my customers to download the app, and told them about the loyalty points; they’ve told their friends, and I’m now enjoying a community of customers using Pixie that has grown month on month. In a nutshell, my revenues through the Pixie app have increased by a staggering 650% during this first five months that my business has been using the platform.”James HunterHunter & Sons Cafe & Bar, Bath

It’s all about enjoying a connection… The ‘urban village’ ethos that epitomises the best of our local communities isn’t a new phenomenon, it’s the way that communities have been defined for as long as any of us can remember. It’s all about allowing a connection; a community’s unique ability to draw crowds of shoppers eager to deal with familiar faces and enjoy innovative and interesting goods, and a depth of experience that is genuinely meaningful.

I thoroughly believe in what Pixie is doing and I welcome their commitment to independent businesses. We subscribed to Pixie early in Bath as we believe in the movement they are working to create - one with a unique capacity to strengthen the independent business community and help local communities thrive. The team often call in for tea and I genuinely feel that the platform is being developed to serve my needs; just as much as it has to serve their own commercial expectations.”Rob & Michelle CominsComins Tea HouseTea Rooms & Cafe, Bath

I see local communities as a living breathing thing and, as such, they do need nurturing to allow them to achieve their potential. Like any ecosystem, it is the diversity of what exists there that enables them to thrive. Since embracing Pixie, I have become more and more convinced that my own community will be all the healthier for inviting this platform to become an integral part of the mix we all work so hard to offer.”Noya PawlynNoya’s Kitchen Vietnamese Restaurant & Supper Club

Visiting a new town and exploring the best it has to offer is always a treat. I run my own business alert to the fact that I want to be one of those unexpected discoveries for people visiting and exploring my own community. So, imagine my pleasure when I began to realise that I had a steady flow of business from people who had found me through the Pixie app; and not just visitors, but new customers from my own town too. Then, I began to appreciate the real importance of Pixie’s loyalty scheme – not just its capacity to keep monies within my own local economy, but to create a committed community of customers who visit me regularly and redeem their loyalty rewards in my own business. ...it’s genius”Richard BertinetBertinet Kitchen & Cookery School Baker, Bath

What Does Pixie Subscription Include?

As a merchant, you enjoy access to three distinct aspects of the platform.

Discovery: As an independent business subscribed to the Pixie platform, we will feature you within the app’s Discovery guide to your own local community and bring all-new customers to your door.

Payment: A simple payment platform that accesses that demographic that wants to do everything through its phone. It’s easy to implement too. We provide you with a mobile phone-based terminal, and once installed you will be live within minutes and, then, customer payment transactions take literally seconds.

Loyalty Scheme: For every pound spent using Pixie, customers enjoy a 1% reward in the form of Pixie points. This isn’t some airy-fairy scheme, the points have a tangible value and can be redeemed against new purchases whenever the customer wishes. Pixie also implements regular incentivised marketing campaigns that are points- based, and these monies are entirely bound to the local community of independent businesses using the platform.

Plus, in addition:

● access to a growing Pixie user-base of like-minded consumers committed to supporting independent businesses

● unlimited in-app opportunities to promote your own business events, and tailor unique collaborations across your community

● Pixie pay hardware with ongoing support and maintenance; a clean, stylish and easy-to-use interface that consumers like

● membership to the Pixie merchant network; working together to make local communities a powerful force

● In your first year your business photography and copy for your profile are provided free of charge

The questions are obvious and always distil down to the same issue; namely, how does Pixie benefit my business?

So, whether you are interested in a deeper understanding of how Pixie can raise awareness of your business; its broader commitment to the sustainability of local communities; or more pointedly, how the loyalty or rewards aspect can bind customers to you and keep monies within the local economy; or simply how to subscribe to the platform, the following will hopefully make things clear. Or, just email us at [email protected] and we will get straight back to you.

We are working on enhancements to the Merchant subscription package and as new features become available these will be brought to your attention. Soon, you’ll be able to configure your own enhanced version of the loyalty scheme – generally, or to target specific customer groups (such as students), or on particular days – and, with Pixie able to make all users in your own community aware of this, it has the capacity to become a powerful marketing tool. Likewise, we shall soon be enabling in-app payments and this too has the potential to become an important stream of incremental revenues.

So, How Do I Sign Up?

And There’s More

The Pixie newspaper, The Explorer, is to be published regularly and will further profile independent businesses subscribed to the platform, and the local communities that they are a part of. The Pixie website will, on an ongoing basis, provide a rich resource of news, articles, notice of upcoming events and, again, profiles of independent businesses. Within the website we are committed to profiling you too and making sure that you are a discoverable feature of your own local community - for all those Pixie Explorers seeking the services you offer.

Actually, having encountered it in a number of cafes and cool independents in Bath and Frome – as a customer myself – I already thought the Pixie payment platform both distinctive and pleasingly simple. That’s why I decided to give it a try at Darcy’s. The big plus though isn’t in having another payment provider sat alongside the others and having all options covered, to be honest I’d go as far as to say that’s really quite boring, it’s the fact that I have customers coming to me all the time just because they can use the app, have found me through the app, and collect loyalty points through their use of the app which are then redeemed in my business for the purchase of a newspaper, cup of tea, or both. I’m happy to endorse it to anyone that asks me.”RachelDarcy ’ s News Ca fe , B a th

Introducing Pixie app users to the mix of independent businesses to be discovered across the Pixie community.

The Pixie app Pay screen detailing the current level of funds available, the top-up option, and the loyalty points earned and instantly redeemable to use.

Example of an independent merchant’s business within the Pixie app’s Discovery platform; providing a profile of the business, live map directions, opening hours, and contact and live call features.

The Pay screen generates a barcode at the till point, and the independent merchant scans it and payment is made. It’s that simple.

When independent businesses acknowledge the role they have in making their own community an ever more attractive place, and when they enthuse their own customers with this same sense that they too can make a difference, the movement to fight back against the harmful effect of out-of-town, big brands, and online shopping has begun. The foundation stone of local communities is all about opportunities to enjoy a connection, to explore and to discover, to take pleasure in a more personal level of service and products offered with love. Pixie too focuses towards sustainable communities, keeping monies within the local community, and opening customers eyes to the wealth of businesses and experiences available to them round every street corner and down every hidden alleyway.

23

In every Pixie local community we have strived to make a difference; by promoting the independent businesses that serve to define the place, by rewarding customers for doing this with us, and by offering a means of keeping monies within the local economy. Now, we’d like you to join us too, and your customers, and together we can achieve something genuinely meaningful. Together, we can make a more local world.”Greg BardenCEO / Founder, Pixie
