ns.Welcome to the March issue

of Lowton & Golborne LocalIt’s every parent’s nightmare to think that their child may become seriously ill. For the family of little Braiden Lee Prescott, that awful situation is currently a reality for them. That’s why we’ve teamed up with some fantastic local people and some very kind hearted local businesses to try and help raise as much money as we can to contribute towards Braiden’s ongoing treatment. Please help support this raffle - see page 14 for the amazing prizes on offer.

Thanks too to everyone who has contacted us with their own family’s stories again this month - anniversaries, achievements and events. We love hearing from you all.

The Lowton and Golborne Local is hand delivered to over 10,500 homes. For advertising rates and any other queries, call Joanne on 07929 427058 or email [email protected]

MUSICAL YOUTHA school girl from Lowton is celebrating after achieving a prestigious national music qualification.

COVER STORY: Local landmark rejuvanted! Find out more about Primus, the company behind Golborne’s police station restoration on pages 6 and 7.

Megan Simpson, 15, who plays the flute gained her Diploma from Trinity College London. She is now an Associate of Trinity College and also eligible to teach music.

Megan’s tutor Katie Landan says, “This is a fantastic achievement for anyone, especially someone as young as Megan. Most students would be at university level before they undertook this qualification.”

Megan, a pupil at Golborne High, originally started learning recorder at Lowton St Lukes Primary School. She progressed to flute and piano and is also a member of Wigan Youth Orchestra.

Megan’s parents Michele and Edward are incredibly proud of

their daughter’s achievement. Michele says:” She has worked very hard but it’s also something that she loves to do as well.”

Renting out a property? Essential info for any landlordAs the number of people becoming landlords soars, research from the Electrical Safety Council has found that misunderstandings between landlords and tenants over responsibilities for safety are exposing many people to life-threatening electrical dangers.

The ESC is concerned that the rise in inexperienced landlords - many of whom are finding it easier to rent out their property than sell it - will further compromise safety.

The guidance for landlords outlines the simple steps you can take to ensure the electrical safety of your properties.

Top tips• Havearegularperiodicinspectionandtestcarriedoutontheproperty

• MakesurethatyourpropertyhasadequateRCDprotection

• Usearegisteredelectricianforanyworkonyourproperty

New regulations imposed by the Government mean that every rented property has to be tested and certified every 5 years.

NJT Electrical are qualified and certificated to carry out these inspections and are able to issue the relevant documentation.

If you are renting your property and have not had the electrics checked or you have any concerns please contact Neil on 07595 048 903 or [email protected] for advice. We are also available for any electrical work within your home. Periodic Checks and certificate start at £55 + VAT.

Dec said, “Janette deserves to win the treat because she works so hard. She works full time and has helped renovated our house from top to bottom at the same time. We’ve been here three years now and time has passed so quickly, we’ve

had no chance of a holiday since we moved in. This is a very well earned pamper time.”

Ricky and all the team at Hair@64 are looking forward to treating Janette soon!

Janette’s a winnerCongratulations to Janette Keenan-Smyth from Golborne, whose husband Dec nominated her for a pampering experience at Golborne’s premier hair salon, Hair@64.

After a hugely successful three years, Primus Accountancy LLP was in need of bigger premises. The company has relocated from its previous home on Parkside Business Park to a larger dedicated office at The Old Police Station, which they have fully renovated inside and out.

David Holt, Partner at Primus Accountancy LLP, said: “It has been a fantastic few years for us since opening our office in Golborne and the influx of new clients has enabled us to expand into a larger office”.

The new office will be overseen by David Holt and Gareth Parker who have worked together for over fifteen years and who together bring a wealth of Accountancy and Tax experience. The team provides a wide range of services, including accountancy, audit, tax advice and business consultancy to clients across the North West and nationwide.

“The firm’s continued success can be attributed to the tailored service we provide our clients. Our ethos is about going above and beyond simply helping businesses file year end accounts

or comply with legislation. We work alongside them as an extension of their business, getting to understand their objectives, and provide regular advice throughout the year to help make a tangible difference.” David added, “We offer a free initial meeting as we really like to talk to our clients as it helps us to fully understand their business and ensures that we offer the best possible advice and services and we are more than happy to visit you at your convenience”.

Finding new offices was harder work than David and Gareth expected until they realised the opportunity to re-develop the Old Police Station in the centre of Golborne. “The Victorian building offered the space that we needed and it was a chance to make a big difference to the local area too. The building is in the heart of the town and we wanted it to be brought back to its former glory. For the restoration we contracted locally based WJ Structures Limited and we are delighted with their

work”, says Gareth who was born and bred in Golborne and who is proud to be part of conserving such a historical building. “During the restoration the contractors discovered the original tiled flooring dating back to the 1800s. Rather than cover the detailed tile work, WJ Structures have preserved the quarry tiling in the hallway and walkthrough, creating a real sense of history. You can imagine the bobbies leading the burglars and drunks to the Police Station cells to dish out the full force of Victorian law enforcement!”

Community Centre needs volunteersSince it opened just over 10 years ago, Church Lane Community Centre has become a real asset to the community. A host to numerous activities such as yoga, karate, music lessons, Slimming World, children’s parties and many others, it is in use every day.

The Centre is run by a group of volunteers and more are now needed volunteers in order to ensure that committments for the future can still be met. Only a modest amount of time and effort is required but the contribution to the community will be most valuable.

If you think that you can help, please ring Barbara Thomas on 01942 728854 for more details.

Mrs Middlehurst has been in charge at Lowton West since September 2012 whilst Mrs Westhead has been on maternity leave. All of the governors, staff and pupils would like to say a great big thank you - we really have valued all the support and commitment Mrs Middlehurst has given.

Staff, governors and pupils at All Saints, Golborne added: “Although Mrs Middlehurst has been working at Lowton West for the last two terms, she has continued to be in regular contact with All Saints. We would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her twelve years of service to our school.

We will all miss her great sense of humour and her lovely singing echoing through the corridors. We wish her all the very best in her new role and hope that she will continue to keep in touch, in both a professional capacity and as a valued friend.”

With a class size of maximum 24 pupils supported by a fully qualified teacher and teaching assistant, their pupil to teacher ratio is never greater than 12:1. Smaller classes and dedicated teachers ensure that the school meets evry pupil’s needs, from high achievers to those experiencing difficulties.

Owner Sandra Green explains, “The benefits of an education at Green Meadow are particularly evident in pupils who have transferred from other schools where they have struggled with the state system and large class sizes or they are high achievers and not being challenged enough. We have a strong track record

in achieving great results in Numeracy and Literacy, but we are also very proud of helping children to become more confident, respectful and happier”

From April 2013 we will be offering an After School Programme for Mathematics and English. This is open to all children in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2, not just children who attend Green Meadow.

For more information about how your child could benefit from this incredible opportunity or to book your place, call 01942 671138. Places limited – early booking advisable to avoid disappointment.

Best wishes to Mrs Middlehurst!

Achieving their full potential at Green Meadow. Pupils, staff and governors of Lowton West Primary School

would like to wish Mrs Middlehurst all the very best as she takes up her new post as Head Teacher at R.L. Hughes Primary School, Ashton. Green Meadow Independent Primary School

has a small, happy and friendly atmosphere.

How clean is the water in your home? Book a free test today. We see the effects of limescale every day in this area. Most obvious are scaled kettles and residue left on baths and shower screens. But some of its hidden effects cause greater concern - blocked pipes and scaled heating elements in hot water cylinders, dishwashers and washing machines, which rapidly become less efficient and need replacing more quickly.

Another invisible effect, which is causing increasing concern, is our water’s impact on our health. Some medical experts are beginning to make links between tap water and serious illnesses including types of cancer, heart disease, senility and allergies like asthma and reactions to foods. Chlorine, which is used to purify water cheaply, is a known toxic, as is ammonia, which is often added to mask the taste and smell of chlorine. Greenpeace is one charity campaigning worldwide to ban chlorine from drinking

water and the Good Housekeeping Institute found that vegetables retained up to 50% more vitamins cooked in water where the chlorine had been removed.

The health benefits of water are widely known. The hidden effects of tap water are still being discovered.

Pure and Cool, the drinking water specialists since

1999, have opened a new branch in Golborne. To mark this event, they are offering

Local readers a FREE water test to check the

quality of their own supply.

Advertiser’s announcements |

A daughter’s giftLittle did Josie know how much her life would change the day her daughter Jen was asked to be a bridesmaid.

Jen joined her local Slimming World group in July and lost 2 ½ stone for the October wedding. Josie says, “I saw how well she was doing, which encouraged me to join. My confidence was non-existent due to my weight – I was worried what people might think. I didn’t want to socialise because I was so unhappy with myself.

But the group was so friendly and the help and support I got from everyone really made a difference. I have gone on to lose 4 stone in 5 months and I feel like a different person. Even though it’s never felt like a diet, my husband has lost 2 ½ stone too because of our healthier lifestyle.

Many adults look back on their childhood and wish they had learned to play an instrument ( or at least wish they had practiced when they had the chance!) As well as being a key life skill, learning music has so many other benefits.

1. Brain power. Research from the University of Kansas suggests that learning an instrument at a young age has an impact on a child’s cognitive skills as they get older.

2. Memory. Music lessons of all types stimulate multiple patterns of brain development, which is what helps increase memory.

3. Social skills. Playing together in a group, band or ensemble teaches children to work with others and to appreciate the value of teamwork.

4. Confidence. Every time a young musician learns a new piece or plays well, they are achieving a goal that will boost their confidence and self esteem.

5. Patience. Learning an instrument is not easy. Children learn how to deal with frustration, the rewards of working hard and the joy of achieving their goal.

Ed Thwaite, Chairman of LENDF (Lowton East Neighbourhood Development Forum), says: “3 000 objections must be a record number and we are delighted so many people took the time to make their feelings known. We have also now seen the traffic figures at key junctions onto the A580 - Newton Road (50,500 per day), Church Lane (41,500 per day) and Golborne Island (46,700 per day). We were shocked how high the numbers are and it just goes to show our area is already choked We will be meeting with the Government Inspector on the 6th March to try to get Wigan’s plans to build 2500 houses in Lowton rejected. To keep uptodate, please visit www.lendf.co.uk”

Andy Burnham said,” This is a brilliant way to bring people together and share thoughts and feelings. The group is friendly and welcoming and I am grateful to the Reader Organisation, the Rotary Club of Leigh and Compassion in Action for the support they give. LOWTON’S CHOKED - campaign update.3 000 local people have sent objections to Wigan Council against the proposed Wainhomes development.

Reading group brings people together A new Golborne reading group got the backing of local MP, Andy Burnham when he called in to meet the members. The group which meets every week is part of the ‘Reader Organisation’, a national charity which uses shared reading as a practical way to connect people, increasing their sense of well being, social inclusion and good mental health.

Thumbs up for Braiden Big hearted staff, parents and children at First Steps nursery in Lowton raised more funds for Braiden Lee Prescott at their cake sale in February. Owner of the nursery Sandra Green said, “This is a cause very close to all our hearts at First Steps, especially as a member of Braiden’s family works with us.”

Little BeltersHuge congratulations to Declan Dawson, aged 8, from Grimshaw Court, Golborne who has successfully defended his British Thai Boxing championship title (under 22k category).

Calling local businesses - Dec needs a sponsor! To get your name linked to this successful young sportsman, please contact Nat on 07568 142 910.

Declan, who is in Year 4 at Golborne St Thomas’, only took up the sport in 2010 and has won three belts so far under the guidance of Geoff Downs at Peel Thai Boxing Club, Little Hulton. Another success story from the club is Jack Oxley, age 9, who also lives in Golborne and attends St Thomas’. Jack has now won his second decision fight and also has a very promising career ahead of him.

Dec’s mum Nat says: “ I am so proud of the kids, they have achieved so much. Thai Boxing is a great sport, teaching them a lot of discipline as well as keeping them very fit.” Dec’s next challenge will be a European title later on this year. Good luck Dec from everyone at the Local magazine!

Golborne Guides lead the way!A new flexible approach to guiding in Golborne means there are more opportunities than ever for girls to get involved.

2nd Golborne Guides is the first group in the County of Lancashire South to run a unit in one six hour session per month rather than the traditional 90 minute evening meeting. This group meets once a month and has the chance to spend the day together, enjoying indoor and outdoor activities and games. 1st Golborne Guides still meet on a weekly basis with Ally Whittaker Guider in Charge, at a new earlier time. This session includes a 30 minute Snack Club, so the girls can come straight from school and then be home again in time for tea.

Leader of 2nd Golborne, Karen Smith, says: “We knew the weekly group at the new earlier time would not suit everyone, so we suggested the monthly group to the girls and it’s proven to be really popular. The girls eat lunch together, which they make themselves and we all really enjoyed having the extra time to spend on the activities – it’s surprising how quickly the time flies! The girls have completed their Cooks Badge and we will be doing the Craft Badge in March. We also have 9 girls working towards their Baden Powell Award, which is a fantastic achievement for any young person.

I have been a member of the Guiding Association since I was a Brownie myself, apart from a few years when my own children were younger. I have particularly happy memories of 1st Golborne Brownies (Friday group) when I was Guider in Charge from 1991 until 1997. Some of those girls now have children of their own and it would be amazing if they could think about the happy times they had in Guiding and came back to help as a leader or a helper.”

If your daughter would like to find out more about being a Guide, call Karen or Ally on the numbers below. Places are available in both units; girls from Golborne, Lowton, Ashton and surrounding areas are all welcome and she doesn’t need to have been in Brownies or Rainbows. To find out more, call Ally on 07414 889 140 (weekly unit) or Karen on 07967 895 779 (monthly unit).

If you can spare a couple of hours a week, please get in touch. Almost 170 girls are currently waiting for a place and volunteers are needed with existing groups or even to start a new unit for Rainbows (aged 5-7), Brownies (ages 7 – 10), Guides (ages 10-14) and Seniors (ages 14 – 25).

For more information, please call Paula Cooper, Division Commissioner, on 01942 730435 or register your interest at www.girlguiding.org.uk
