from the editorI hope that you all enjoyed the Jubilee Celebrations as much as my family and I did. It has been a long time that I have felt such pride as I did whilst walking with the Dreamscheme at the Youth Parade. The volume of people that turned out to partake in the parade or to support was wonderful and the air of community spirit over the entire bank holiday was to be applauded. The feedback I have received is that is was a weekend to be remembered. But lets not stop now the Jubilee is over.
There are events planned throughout the summer, some of which are looking for support from volunteers in particular the Apex Play Day on the 1st August – more details within this months publication. Concerts are scheduled with the Burnham and Highbridge Band and various summer fetes organised. Such hard work goes into the organising of these events, so lets support our local community. I often feel that other towns offer more than what you have at home – but sometimes its just we don’t always see what is on our own doorstep. Enjoy the activities planned and the Summer! I look forward to hearing from you

rotary BookshopBurnham book-lovers and holidaymakers will once again be able to enjoy a feast of reading now the Rotary Bookshop is open in the former Threshers’ wine shop in College Street.
The premises hosted the most successful Rotary Charity Bookshop ever from July 2010 till June 2011 when the possibility of a new commercial lease caused it to close. The owners and letting agents, Abbott & Frost, have agreed that as no new tenant has yet appeared, the Rotary Club may use the shop again to raise funds for local charities and good causes.
The Club is grateful to Threshers and to Abbott & Frost for their co-operation in allowing the Club to use the empty shop once again. Donations of good, clean books for re-sale will be welcomed and can be brought to the shop when open, which is planned to be from 10 a.m till 4 p.m. daily except Sundays from Tuesday 5th June.

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a Rotary/Dreamscheme Wall has been constructed and was formally unveiled in Apex Park at 9.45 a.m. on Saturday 2nd June.
The Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea has undertaken the design and construction of this unique “S” shaped commemorative Wall. The Wall is also in recognition of the work that the young people of Burnham Dreamscheme carry out in the town in aid of the community.
First and Second Year apprentices from Bridgwater College have undertaken the building of the Wall as part of
their construction training, and the young men worked through fair and foul weather to complete their task on time,
and to a very high standard of workmanship!
During April, about thirty young people involved in the Burnham Dreamscheme made and hand-painted Ninety Six ceramic tiles bearing their interpretations of the ‘Queen’s Crown’, which have been inserted into both faces of the Wall.
As the Wall is to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, a commemorative plaque is built into the brick face on each elevation. There are two more Plaques, one highlighting the Rotary Club, The Dreamscheme and the Bridgwater College. The other identifying the Sponsoring
Suppliers who so generously gave cash and materials without which the project may never had commenced. Thank you!
A seat will be provided on each side to enable visitors to Apex Park to rest and admire the views, and the Rotary Club are awaiting the materials delivery to manufacture the Seats. As the planning of the project proceeded, the Club sought received very kind offers of assistance and sponsorship from local businesses.
The Project has been managed by Jim Tancock and Mike Squire, from the Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea.
It is hoped that the local community will enjoy it in years to come..

Did you know that there are 5.4 million people in the UK with asthma? That means many of us know someone with the condition or have it ourselves.
In an asthma attack, the muscles of the air passages in the lungs go into spasm. This causes the airways to become narrowed, making breathing difficult. It's a distressing thing for the sufferer and for people watching.
An attack could be triggered by an allergy, a cold, or a certain drug. Other triggers include cigarette smoke, pollen and dust but some attacks may be caused by no trigger at all. Most asthma suffers will usually use a reliever inhaler
during an attack to help them. Someone having an asthma
attack will have difficulty in breathing, particularly breathing out. There may also be a wheeze when the person breathes out, coughing and the person may be distressed and anxious.
In a severe case, the person may have difficulty in talking, lips going blue and difficulty talking – in this case, call for an ambulance immediately.
To reassure the person, keep calm and get them to take a puff of their reliever inhaler. Encourage them to breathe slowly and deeply. Help the person sit down in a comfortable position, but not lying down – usually sitting
upright.A mild attack should ease
within a few minutes. If it doesn’t, ask the person to take another dose from their inhaler.
If the person doesn't respond to treatment after five minutes, they appear to be getting worse or they find talking difficult due to breathlessness, call 999/112 for emergency help
There is no substitute for a thorough understanding of first aid, to find out more information about volunteering for St John Ambulance in the Highbridge & Burnham area. Please contact Highbridge Adult Division on 01278 780961

The National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) has opened a new charity shop in Burnham-on-Sea on Saturday 21st April to raise money for the care and re-homing of animals.
The Regent Street shop is based eight miles from the Trust’s Somerset Rescue Centre at Heaven’s Gate Farm, Langport and will be an important way of promoting its work. In addition to a wide range of items for sale, the shop will
also display some of the latest animals available for re-homing.
The Somerset Centre of the NAWT started operating 21 years ago and re-homes almost 350 dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and field animals a year. The fundamental principle of our approach to animal welfare is that no healthy animal will be put to sleep. Money raised goes towards their care.
NAWT Director of Resources Jacquie Gaywood said: “We wouldn’t be able to help so many animals without your support. This new shop will provide additional income and help us to continue our work.”
The official opening takes place at 11am on Saturday April 21 and will be opened by Nick Walters, chair of the charity’s trustees.
The shop welcomes donations of clothes, books, toys, bric a brac and any household items. You can either deliver to the charity shop during opening hours or to the Langport centre. It is that time of year for a spring clean, so if you are thinking of throwing some bits out then cut the refuse on the landfills and recycle it with us.

Summer offer on Medical Qigong
Therapy!! Free hour long introductory consultation followed by a short treatment.
Medical Qigong Therapy is an ancient Chinese healing art, estimated to be around 5,000 years old. It is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which includes Acupuncture, Herbalism and Tuina massage. "Qi" (Chi) means air, breath of life, or vital energy that flows through all things in the universe. In the human body, Qi is the fundamental life energy responsible for health and vitality. For a number of reasons, your Qi energy can become disturbed, blocked or depleted which can result in pain, illness, or just a feeling of
disharmony.Medical Qigong therapy can
be used for a wide range of conditions, either on its own or to compliment Western medicine, treating both the root cause as well as the symptoms. The treatment, (which involves sitting or lying, fully clothed) includes specific healing techniques used to purge, tone or activate the body's vital energy systems, replenishing your Qi, and then ensuring that the Qi’s flow is unimpaired throughout your body. Restoring balance to the body's Qi is the key to health and well-being.

One of the worst scenarios that we encounter is when a computer has had a serious crash, or even been damaged/lost due to fire/theft.
People generally value their computer based on what they paid for it, but often the main valuable item is actually the data. For example, this could be digital photos, music, documents, e-mails or address book. Until these are lost, people often do not realise the value of what is stored on a computer. The best advice is to purchase some kind of backup system. The best, but usually the most expensive long term is an off-site backup solution. This copies your data via the internet connection to a remote server which can be accessed to retrieve data either due to accidental loss or worse. We have found this the most ideal solution because in many cases, people have a local backup solution such as an external hard drive or a memory stick, but should this medium either fail, or not actually contain what you think it contains, you can be under a false sense of security and
then be badly let down when you need to get your files back.
A good system, which is free, is called Dropbox (www.dropbox.com). This gives a free 2 Gigabyte backup limit, and is quite easy to use. More space can be added to the Dropbox at a reasonable premium.
If you have a lot of data, and do not want to pay for an off-site solution, I would advise buying a portable USB hard drive. Some of these contain software which will back up the computer, but as always, you must check what is backed up is actually the correct data. On more than one occasion, I have met people with a backup drive that contains no data!!! Should you prefer a professional to give advice, please see our main advert on this page, or e-mail [email protected] – we can then arrange for an engineer to visit..

GreenSpace founded Love Parks Week in 2006 with a simple aim: to encourage people to visit, enjoy and take pride in their local parks and green spaces. In our first year, 96,000 people attended 240 events. Over the next five years the campaign made huge steps forward, building up to 1,200 events and 1,000,000 participants last year.
This year Love Parks Week (July 21st – 29th) will be focusing on
access for all to healthy green spaces. The campaign will be highlighting what a healthy green space looks like and will begin to assess the nation’s parks by encouraging people to give their park a simple health check. By holding, or simply attending a Love Parks Week event, you can help drive the message that our parks and green spaces are essential to healthy, happy and strong communities. www.loveparksweek.org.uk

A Somerset youth charity has received a £16,000 windfall to help young people back into work.
The money was donated to Somerset Rural Youth Project by the Somerset Council for Christian Care, a charity that has now stopped operating.
It will be used to help young people across the county gain access to employment and learning.
Jeremy Orchard, representing the Somerset Council for Christian Care, said: “We researched many local charities and found that SRYP had very similar objectives and carried out similar projects as our own charity had. Having met with members of SRYP we, as trustees, felt that it was most
appropriate to transfer our funds to this very successful operation.”
The money will be specifically used to support Somerset Rural Youth Project’s Rural Employment and Learning team.
Youth unemployment is currently nationally high and Somerset reflects this. The REAL team offers targeted and individual support to young people, boosts self confidence, self esteem and provides practical help with CV building, completing job applications and interview skills. The REAL team also runs an NOCN Employability skills accreditation course. One youngster who completed this learning recently said: ‘Coming to the course has really built up my confidence; I have had a really good time with everyone here. Meeting others in exactly the
same circumstances as me has boosted my confidence too – I used to be quite shy and found it difficult to talk to employers and any one in authority. I always felt foolish!! I don’t anymore – I have learnt ways around my shyness and am quite confident to get on and do things for myself. My interview technique has improved a lot and I have learnt to have more confidence and not worry so much. I would recommend this course to any young people out there that are struggling like I was to begin with.’”
If you would like to get in touch with Somerset Rural Youth Project’s REAL project, contact the charity on 01278 722100, email Julie Rickwood on [email protected] or visit the website on www.sryp.org.uk.

A new woodland trail has been formed at Apex Park at Highbridge, created by working with Elmwood School, Futures for Somerset and Sedgemoor District Council. The trail was created during the week of 21st May - 25th May, Sedgemoor's Clean Surroundings Team excavated a depth with a mini digger and provided the tools, bark mulch as well as the woodchip timber edging for the students to construct a trail. Approximately half of the pathway has been created and it is hoped that this project will be phased and
continued in the future with options of planting, creating a sensory garden, installing picnic benches and designing signage as well as an information board at a later date.
Martin Waters from Elmwood School said: We had an excellent week and the weather was a huge bonus. All the students have been amazing. They have worked hard, worked together, co-operated and generally excelled themselves. SDC have been very helpful and accommodating and deserve praise....thank you for the
opportunity, it has been a really positive one.
The project has created skills such as team work across peer groups, increased communication skills, created friendships, supported outdoor learning and increased environmental awareness. It is thanks to the enthusiasm of the teaching staff, parks and open spaces district council officers, Sedgemoor's Clean Surroundings Team and the students that has enabled this exciting project to happen.

To get the best from flowers you will need to feed them and, as soon as any flower heads start to die, remove them to help keep new flower heads coming.
If you are growing sweet pea plants you will need to cut the flowers regularly to prevent seed pods forming unless, of course, you want some seeds for next year.
Do not forget your roses, feed them with liquid manure diluted to a pale straw colour, it will help you get a second crop of flowers.

somerset Wildlife trustThe Somerset Wildlife Trust is extremely grateful for the support that was given towards the Plant Sale and Open Garden held at Rookery House, the Causeway, on June 9th, a date that had to be rescheduled from May when the car park field literally was under water..
The magnificent and record sum of over £2100 was raised and all will be used in Somerset “Protecting Wildlife for the Future” - the logo line of the Trust. Thanks go to everyone who was able to help either by providing plants, cakes and raffle prizes and by assisting in the organisation for the event and on the day, and by coming to buy. Over 150 people attended and enjoyed the garden and refreshments in, on the day itself, good weather. Thanks also to Gill Isgar and Mark & Ricky Popham for the use of the field as the car park - this of course is absolutely essential for this event at this location.
The day was enhanced by Dot Reaney bringing her Olympic Torch for everyone present to admire and marvel over, and enjoy listening to her experience in running the torch relay through Washford.
This was tabled as the major fund-raising event for the Mendip Hills Area Group of the Somerset Wildlife Trust and this event has achieved that goal.
