Introducti onTransport for Athens (TfA) is the transport authority of the greater area of Athens, Greece, responsible for planning and managing public transport services including subway, bus, tram and trolley. TfA moves around 1 million individual passengers daily and has annual fare revenues of approximately 250 million Euros. In late 2014 Masabi, in partnership with MasterCard, launched a city-wide, multi modal mobile ti cketi ng system across the network.

and restricted journeys across transport types.

To introduce fl exible travel Masabi, in partnership with MasterCard, and TfA deployed mobile ti cketi ng in the city across all modes of public transport. The deployment, which launched in late December 2014, represents the city’s fi rst implementati on of a digital ti cketi ng system that supplements its existi ng paper ti cket cash-based operati ons.

Athens rolled-out Masabi’s end-to-end mobile ti cketi ng system, JustRide, which has also been successfully deployed in other large citi es including; Boston, London, San Diego, New Orleans, and will be launching in New York in 2016.

Consequently, Athens’ 1 million daily public transport customers are now able to purchase and display ti ckets for immediate and future travel through their smartphones, saving ti me and hassle as they no longer need to go out their way and queue up to buy a ti cket to travel. Meanwhile, Transport for Athens expects to reduce its costs for handling cash and paper ti cket printi ng, enabling new investment in infrastructure and services. The move from cash to card and ability for customers to purchase a ti cket and travel at any ti me, from anywhere in the city has been a massive asset and is a step-change in accessibility for the transit system.

The Soluti onTransport for Athens (TfA) is using Masabi’s award-winning ti cketi ng and payment service JustRide, a cloud-based, deployment-proven, end-to-end mobile ti cketi ng and fare collecti on system. It comprises award-winning apps for ti cket purchase, display and inspecti on together with back-end infrastructure

for secure payments, ti cket management, customer service, reporti ng and real-ti me analyti cs.

JustRide allows commuters to use their mobile phones to buy ti ckets for all urban transit services in Athens. The service makes purchasing ti ckets easier, faster and more convenient allowing customers to buy their ti ckets while at home, on the go, or in the metro/bus stati on, without needing to wait in line or scramble for change. The technology also supports both greek and english language users, making it useful for both locals and tourists. As a result, Athens now has an innovati ve mobile ti cketi ng platf orm across its enti re urban transit network alongside its previous cash only system.

By expanding accessibility of purchase, from limited retail points to being able to purchase anywhere via their smartphone devices, customers now fi nd it much easier to pay their fare and so revenue is growing. The cloud-hosted soluti on also off ers signifi cant benefi ts to TfA, allowing them reduce spend on costly ti cket machines and ti cket tokens, and providing bett er user data, allowing more effi cient planning of transport resources.

Results and the FutureThe soft -launch of the TfA mobile ti cketi ng app was Masabi’s most successful to date in terms of downloads and ti cket acti vati ons. Since then, mobile ti cketi ng has become part of the fabric of daily

operati ons in Athens, delighti ng Athenians, tourists, and of course, the TfA team. Masabi, Mastercard and TfA have seen strong growth, with the number of ti ckets bought through the app rising month on month.

The TfA app has also given the authority infi nite sales capacity without spending money on expensive hardware.

“Mobile ti cketi ng off ers a win-win situati on for Athens, combining an excellent user experience for passengers with the added benefi t of reducing the costs associated with cash handling,” said Gregory Dimitriadis, Chairman of the BoD & CEO, Transport for Athens. “In deploying Masabi’s technology across all modes of public transport in Athens, we are launching one of the world’s largest mobile ti cketi ng deployments seen to date. We are proud to be leading the world in off ering this innovati on across all modes of transport.”
