We wanted to give you a flavour of this great city, and show you how easy it is for you and your delegates to get here and travel around.

For me, no other city can match London’s energy, its creativity, its diversity, its ability to reinvent itself. There’s the iconic London

that we all know, with Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, black cabs and red buses. There’s vibrant London, with its world-famous museums and galleries and Michelin-starred restaurants. And then there’s innovative London, with its state-of-the-art conference facilities and unique venues.

Experience a city like no otherIt is my great pleasure to share London’s story with you, and to let you know why this is such a wonderful place to hold your conference or event.

London is where two thousand years of history meets the latest in technology. London is also a leafy city, where most of its 146,000 hotel rooms are within walking distance of a park. And above all, London is accessible: this is one of the best-connected cities on the planet, with direct flights to 336 destinations around the globe.

As you’ll see, this is a city where you can get around easily, whether by Tube or taxi, bus or boat. And it’s a city with big plans for the future, with important new transport infrastructure opening in the next few years: new train lines, new stations, new services, making it easier than ever to explore.

Getting to London

With no less than six international airports, plus the option of getting to the capital by train, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to bringing your delegates to London.

1 Heathrow With 190,000 passengers passing through every day, London Heathrow (LHR) has more international customers than any other airport in the world. As one of the world’s most advanced airports, too, Heathrow has fantastic business facilities across all of its five terminals, including business lounges, and there are excellent conference rooms and meeting rooms in many of the hotels at the airport. The new Elizabeth line will make it even quicker to get from Heathrow to central London and Docklands, where ExCeL London and The O2 are located.

2 Gatwick In 2016 London Gatwick (LGW) sent 43.1 million customers on their way. Business facilities include Regus Express Workpods, which are accessible around the clock, and provide a private, soundproof workspace when you need it.

3 Stansted London Stansted Airport (STN) is one of the fastest-growing airports in Europe. Take a look at its business lounge and excellent conference facilities, and you’ll see why.

4 London City Just six miles (9.7km) from Central London and three miles (4.8km) from Canary Wharf, London City Airport (LCY) is one of the most accessible airports in the city. Business facilities include workstations throughout the airport – they’ll even give you a free shoe shine.

5 London Luton London Luton (LTN), one of the UK’s largest airports, offers quiet work areas where you can recharge your devices, and even state-of-the-art SnoozePods when you need a recharge yourself.

6 London SouthendSometimes smaller is better: at London Southend (SEN) you can breeze through arrivals or departures, and the airport is just a short hop from the heart of the city. Its SkyLife Lounge is a great place to get some work done.

7 Eurostar Flying isn’t the only way to get to London town. The Eurostar high-speed train has revolutionised travel between the UK and Europe: it’s only just over two hours from Paris or Brussels to St Pancras International station. With business lounges available in its London, Paris and Brussels stations, going by Eurostar means you’ll arrive in style, right in the heart of the city.

80% of event planners agree or strongly agree it is easy to get to London by Eurostar from mainland Europe.

Getting around London

BicycleRed-and-white Santander Cycles are everywhere in London. Rent one for as long as you need it, use the bike lanes that you’ll find all over the city, then drop your bike off at any convenient docking station (there are hundreds).

OvergroundWhile it’s not as famous as the Tube, travelling on London’s suburban rail network, London Overground, can be just as fast. Plus you get a great view.

BoatGoing by boat can be an idyllic way of getting around London: ferry services run up and down the river Thames, stopping at some of the city’s most popular attractions.

Taxi

Bus

Drivers of London’s iconic Black Cabs have to spend years learning ‘the Knowledge’, meaning that they know this great city like the back of their hand. Hail a taxi in the street or book one online, and you know you’ll get to your destination quickly.

Finally, while Greater London is vast, it’s easy to forget that most of the iconic landmarks of central London are very close together. So get your walking shoes on, take a stroll and see the sights.

Walking

What says ‘London’ more than a bright red double-decker bus? London buses run all over town, and you get a fantastic view from the top deck.

As one of the best-connected cities in the world, there are lots of ways of getting around in London, quickly and easily.

Canary Wharf station

Dive into one of London’s many Underground stations and take the subway (Londoners call it the Tube). This is probably the quickest way of getting around town, and as the world’s first subway system, many Tube stations are well worth seeing in their own right. You’ll need an Oyster card to travel on the Tube (you can use them on buses too).

The Tube

Closest station: Prince Regent or Custom House

The O2Capacity (theatre): 20,000

To see all that The O2 (capacity 20,000) has to offer you can take the Tube to North Greenwich, or take the cable car, giving you a spectacular view of the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. You can also catch the river bus, which goes directly from the London Eye and London Bridge Piers.

There’s a big new reason for choosing London for your conference or event.

Crossrail is delivering a new railway which will be known as the Elizabeth line when it opens through central London from December 2018. It is transforming travel in the city, improving journey times, increasing central London’s rail capacity, easing congestion and making London’s transport system overall one of the best-connected in the world.

Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project, and one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the UK. The service that will run on this route from December 2018, named the Elizabeth line after Queen Elizabeth II, will link 40 stations from Reading and Heathrow in the west, via the Docklands, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.

The Elizabeth line makes our major international gateways much more accessible – for example, the time to get from London Heathrow to the City of London (Liverpool Street) will fall from 55 to 34 minutes.

The heart of London’s entertainment district, the West End, is even closer: if you’re staying at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Bloomsbury hotel, your journey time from Heathrow to Tottenham Court Road station will be just 28 minutes.

And new stations at Custom House and Canary Wharf mean that getting to major events venues such as The O2 and ExCeL London will now be much easier: getting from Heathrow to Custom House for ExCeL will take just 44 minutes. The new Elizabeth line stations will all have step-free access from platform to street level.

So with the new Elizabeth line, London now has some of the most accessible events venues in the world.

Oyster: the easy way to travel

Save time and money on Oyster card group orders.

Using the Oyster card is the most effective way to travel around London. A contactless payment card, the Oyster can be used on buses, underground and overground trainlines, Thames Clipper river taxis and even the cable car that crosses the river Thames, allowing you and your delegates to travel around London seamlessly, and without needing multiple tickets.

The London Convention Bureau team can help you organise group orders of Oyster cards ahead of your event (orders are limited to a minimum of 50).

As an official Transport for London-appointed distributor, we can also save you time and money as we organise a hassle-free bulk buy. Don’t hesitate to ask the London Convention Bureau for advice for your event (please allow two months for your order).

Pay as you go fares are cheaper than buying a paper single ticket.

Successful events

“London is a fantastic city for groups, with so much diversity and things to do and see. With any major international city, transportation can be the biggest challenge. What we find with London, over other destinations, is the variety and in some cases the quirkiness with which you can take a group around. There is the huge number of taxi and bus lanes, an excellent underground service, a cable car and of course the river, which cuts right through the centre of the city and is undoubtedly the best way to see London.

Planning is key to ensure you use the right transport solution at the right time to get groups across the city in the fastest or most interesting way. We would always recommend using as many of the transport links as you can to really enjoy and take in as much of London as possible. From walking through the ancient historical parts to using the high-speed train direct from St Pancras to the Olympic Park in just seven minutes.”
