Welcome cattlemen, to the L83 Lodoen Cattle Co/Huber EY Red Angus Annual production sale. We have an offering of 41 Red Angus bulls, 8 Horned Hereford bulls, and 1 Polled Hereford bull.All of our Red Angus Herd Bulls are genetic defect free. We are using the best genetics that we can find in Canada and the US that fit our breeding program. The mother cows, of both breeds, in our herd make outstanding cows with their mothering ability, sound udders, and in many cases, a shorter gestation period resulting in smaller birth weights and still maintain the growth

genetics that result in heavier weaning weights. In an effort to bring our customers better bulls, we only breed good cows. “It’s all about the cow” is what we truly believe. We also believe that it is our responsibility to bring our customers seed stock that works for the commercial cattleman as well as the purebred operators.We encourage you to visit the ranch before March 22nd to look over this powerful set of bulls that we have for your appraisal and to see the mothers of the sale bulls. Huber EY Red AngusGreetings from Huber EY Red Angus, Hard to believe that it is calving season and bull buying season again, where does the time go? I have come to realize the only date I’m going to get this time of year is if I jump in the car and head to a bull sale. We enjoy this time of year watching the newborn calves jumping around in the straw and visiting with friends in the cattle industry. We are striving to raise bulls and heifers for our customers that are going to give them structural correctness, maternal traits, good carcass and performance. With half of our herd being commercial, we know the importance of needing the pounds come sale day. Our bulls were weaned in early September. We don’t creep feed the calves, except in the spring for a couple weeks they get a medicated pellet. We responsibly feed our bulls a non-commercial feed to gain an average of 3.0 lbs. /day, with the goal to promote body development and maintain longevity. Herd Health: Both herds are in excellent health. Both sets of bulls have been poured with Dectomax and are on a full, yearly vaccination program. Vet care for the Lodoen herd is provided by Dr. Russ Behm, Minot Vet Clinic, 701-852-4831. The Huber herd is under the care of Dr. Hogan at 701-320-2856. Both vets would be happy to answer any questions pertaining to the sellers bulls.

Term, Conditions, and Guarantee:All bulls will be semen tested prior to the sale, but it is highly recommended that you test the bulls before turning them out for the breeding season. If a bull tests as a non-breeder, the seller has 180 days to make an adjustment. If the bull is returned to the seller and declared a sound breeder by a competent veterinarian, he will be returned to the buyer at the buyer’s expense. In case the bull is declared a non-breeder, the bull will be replaced with one of similar quality if possible or the purchase price will be refunded if the bull was returned in the same body condition as on sale day. As soon as an animal is purchased, it becomes the responsibility of the buyer. We do recommend buying insurance for any bull not taken home by the buyer sale day. Any bull taken home by it’s new owner will receive a $75 credit off the purchase price. Also, for anyone buying more than 3 bulls, a 5% discount will be given. Transportation will be provided by the seller in the state or within 300 miles of the ranch. All bulls must be picked up or will be delivered from Lodoen’s or Huber’s by April 15th, but will be fed for free until then if necessary.

Supplement Sheet: On sale day, you will be provided with a supplement sheet that will include scrotal measurements, current weight, hip height, and carcass data. Feel free to call any of us with any questions prior to sale day, or better yet, stop at one of the ranches and see the cattle first hand.

Accomodations: A block of rooms has been reserved at the Ramkota Inn 701-228-7700 in Bismarck under the Lodoen/Huber Production Sale and can be booked until March 18th. If you need any assistance with rooms, don’t hesitate to give Jennie a call. We will also host a Sale Social the evening before at the Ramkota in an Executive Suite under the Lodoen name. Please give either of these gentlemen a call and ask them about any animal that you may be interested in as both men have much knowledge about US and Canadian genetics in both breeds and will be able to assist you with what should work for your purebred or commercial herd. Travelocity is an outstanding son of Sakic. His mother, Duchess 739S, is one of the top producing females at Six Mile Ranch. She produced the top selling bull, Wrangler, who is Travelocity’s full brother and who topped Six Mile’s 2010 sale. Travelocity’s impressive phenotype closely resembles that of his breed leading sire, Sakic. The first sons sell in this sale.

We raised this calf and used him on a few cows and heifers before selling him as a two year old in our 2012 sale. His dam, Six Mile Lassie, is a Fully Loaded daughter out of the famous Lassie cow owned by Six Mile. His sire, L83 Entourage, is a Mulberry son that we raised and were fortunate enough to get several daughters to retain in our herd. We named this guy Traveler because he needs to go places. We took him to Denver to show off the new Travelocity genetics along with a half sister and we did not disappoint. This bull combines tons of power with Big Time as his grandsire and maternal strength with Sakic as his other grandsire. This King Ranch son is off of a first calf heifer and she did very well by bringing this guy in at 759 lbs at weaning time. We did use King Ranch on heifers and they were nice, long calves and our heifers had no trouble with them. Norseman King is known for his female producing qualities and we are now seeing the same from King Ranch as his first daughters are calving in our herd. We couldn’t be happier with the udders on these girls and this calf’s daughters should be the same.

Last spring, Wind Chill, our outcross sire out of a black bull, spent his time in Canada so we only used him as an AI sire. Since 2010, the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and the American Simmental Association (ASA)have combined their growth and carcass datasets to provide commercial producers with the most reliableEPDs in the beef industry. In the summer of 2012, RAAA and ASA adopted a common base for Growth (BW,WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass (MARB, YG, CW, REA, FAT) EPDs so that all animals registered in either RAAAor ASA can be directly compared – regardless of breed makeup.

What is BASE?For decades, each breed association has presented EPDs in their own language (the base). Base is no more than a reference point for any traitagainst which subsequent generations of animals are compared. The establishment of a base ensures that the population future generations arecompared to remains stable, which allows the breed’s genetic trend to be accurately identified.Raw Genetic Value + Base Adjustment = Published EPD

Study Percentile Ranks…Percentile ranks are an easy reference and therefore a powerful tool to assist you in becoming accustomed to the new multi-breed base. RedAngus EPD percentile ranks are presented along with all active animals’ EPDs, and reference how animals compare within their respective RedAngus subpopulations, i.e. Sire Summary Sires, Active Dams, Non-Parent Bulls, etc. It’s important to realize that although the multi-breed base al-lows for the direct comparison of Red Angus and Simmental EPDs, the percent ranks for Red Angus animals will continue to simply compare thegenetics of Red Angus animals against other Red Angus. Thus, an animal that was in the top 10% for growth under the old Red Angus base will stillbe in the top 10% for growth in the new Red Angus multi-breed base.

Example:In the past, you preferred to purchase bulls that had a -2.0 or lower BW EPD.Since a -2.0 on the old RAAA base represented the top 20% for BW, you now need to use -2.7 as your critical selection threshold as that representsthe top 20% for BW on the new multi-breed base.
