The origins of Lodz University of Technology are inseparably linked to the history of the city of Lodz which at the end of the 19th century, due to rapid growth and development, was the second most densely populated city in Poland. Engineers were in great demand.

Citizens of Lodz had to wait long for the opportunity to study at a technical university in their home town. It was not before the end of the Second World War that the idea started to take shape. As a result of intense efforts of the City authorities, The Ministry of Education acknowledged the need and took the decision to establish a technical university in Lodz. .

Professor Bohdan Stefanowski of Warsaw University of Technology, who would become the first rector of the University, arrived in Lodz at the beginning of May, 1945. Assisted by a team of his closest associates, he coordinated organisational activities leading to the establishment of the University. .

Former Rosenblatt factory buildings located in the vicinity of the city center were the first seat of the University. Authorities of the city of Lodz provided interim teaching rooms and office space for the University employees. .

The decree which officially established Lodz University of Technology was signed on May 24, 1945. The Faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical and Textile Engineering were the first ones to open their doors to students. .

The University developed vigorously. Further buildings of the former Rosenblatt factory were adapted at an accelerated rate. Every year, the University premises grew larger and larger, more and more students enrolled, the number of academic staff increased, new faculties and departments were created, new buildings erected. .

EDUCATION

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

As the needs of the external environment change, the University continually improves its system of education. In education, we take advantage of modern teaching methods and techniques, e.g. project based learning and e-learning. The Design Thinking Lab has been created for our students and academic staff to spur creative thinking so that people from various faculties, pursuing various degrees could work together on projects sprawling across many, seemingly distant disciplines. .

The University takes great care to ensure that its students come across problems encountered in real business and industry operations. We want our students to be aware, right from the very beginning, where they would like to see themselves in the future. We also put great emphasis on continual development of soft skills: communication, creativity, resourcefulness, flexibility, team work and time management.

Career Services Office operates very actively at Lodz University of Technology. It provides support to students in their search for satisfying employment and in the process of making decisions concerning their future careers. The Office also encourages students and Ph.D. candidates to take initiative and start their own business. Lodz University of Technology is well-prepared to welcome students with disabilities. Great help in everyday functioning is provided for students with special needs by the Office for Students with Disabilities (BON) which operates on the campus. The main task of the Office is to ensure equal opportunity in education of people with special needs.

BON provides study and mobility assistance, transportation for wheelchair users, one-on-one tuition, rents specialised learning aids, provides the service of digitalisation of educational materials, psychological support and career counselling. The Office has been repeatedly recognized for its efforts to 'break barriers'. In 2013, it was awarded the statue of the Icebreaker which is awarded to companies and institutions that provide support for employees with disabilities. .
