London Trainees – what it’s really likeMany law firms, including Arnold & Porter, have a definite style of practice and work environment. We think ours is spirited, open, welcoming, and collegial. We encourage our lawyers to be themselves. Intelligence, originality, initiative, and independent judgment are highly respected. All lawyers, regardless of their experience, are expected to express their views on substantive firm matters.

The London office reflects the environment of the firm generally with its collegial and informal atmosphere, regular informal social gatherings, smart business-casual dress policy, team based assignment policies and a leading pro bono programme.

When you join Arnold & Porter you will be introduced to the firm through our training and induction programme. This includes information about the firm’s practices and procedures and training in the use of our IT systems, library, and online data sources. You will attend the fast track Professional Skills Course which is provided externally for the firm.

During your training contract you will have the opportunity to spend four six-month seats working from the following practice groups―Intellectual Property, Corporate and Securities, Antitrust/Competition, Life Sciences, Product Liability, Employment, Telecoms, International Arbitration, White Collar Crime or Commercial Litigation. Arnold & Porter encourages individuals to work across specialisms, so you may find that whilst you are working in one group, you undertake work in a variety of different areas and for a variety of different partners and fee-earners throughout the firm. You may also have an opportunity to work in our Brussels office.

The training programme in our London office includes in-house as well as external training sessions, providing professional development training that is linked to a competencies framework.

Making the Right Choice

Applying for a City training contract is a tricky business. There are lots of similar firms, doing similar work and describing themselves in a similar way. I found it difficult to navigate myself amongst the prospectuses and law fairs to find one that really suited me. But then I came across Arnold & Porter. A firm that genuinely offers something a bit different.

Training

Our training contract is divided into four, six-month seats. Each seat is spent in a different practice area. I am currently seated in IP, which is my third seat. My first seat was in Corporate and my second seat was in Competition. Trainees at A&P are expected to help other departments whenever they have spare capacity, or if there is a business demand.

Rewards of Pro Bono

Pro bono is an important part of the culture at Arnold & Porter, and unlike other firms, that’s not just ‘hot-air’. Soon after joining the firm, I was involved in a spread of pro bono work, including defending the pension rights of trans-genders and providing financial services advice for a homelessness charity.

Work/Life Balance

A&P has two main social events a year: the Christmas party and the Summer party. If you are a keen cyclist, there is also opportunity to ride with the A&P team which participates annually in the Prudential Ride London 100 miles. Last year, we raised over £7000 for the firm’s charity, Medair.

Jessica DaviesTrainee Solicitor joined 2015

With a client list that reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of the pharmaceutical industry, Arnold & Porter’s traditional strengths lie in the life sciences sector. As a former research scientist myself, this instantly caught my attention. In this respect, the firm’s expertise cover the whole spectrum of a medicinal product’s life, from; drug development, IP, regulation / compliance, competition to product liability. For people interested in this industry, there simply isn’t another law firm who could offer this breadth of exposure.

Now that I have been with the firm for over a year, I’ve come to appreciate that there is a whole lot more to Arnold & Porter than I first thought. Its international reputation attracts clients from a whole range of industries, including; financial services, aviation, retail, news providers and IT/telecoms.

Due to the London office’s modest size, trainees can work very closely with Partners and Senior Counsel, which allows responsibility to be assumed from day 1. This holistic approach to training provides valuable insights into every aspect of being a solicitor and allows important skills like pitching, networking and transaction management to be learnt at a very early stage.

Another key aspect that attracted me to Arnold & Porter was the firm’s commitment to pro-bono clients. Everyone, regardless of their position, is expected to devote a certain amount of their time to non-billable, pro-bono work. As well as allowing trainees to support causes that interest them, this expectation provides the opportunity to work with colleagues across different practice areas, which fosters the firm’s collegial office atmosphere.

For self-starters, the range of opportunities that Arnold & Porter offers is impressive. Ultimately, I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to learn from industry experts who are willing to invest their time in juniors.
