Starting from the Kumano Magaibutsu, one of Japan's largest stone carvings at 8 meters in height, you will head towards Makiodo Temple, in which 9 Buddhist images from the Heian Era are preserved. Climb the rocky mountain up to the Asahi and Yuhi Kannon Buddhist Carvings, look over the picturesque rice fields of Tashibu no Sho, which have remained unchanged since the middle ages, and then head towards Mount Saiei. The finish point lies at the ancient Kozanji Temple in the Rokugo Manzan region, which was one of western Japan's greatest temples at one time.

Nameshi Dam Greenland is famous for its handmade soba noodles, and provides a great place to rest.
The course starts at Kozanji Temple, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Kunisaki peninsula. Head down Mount Saiei towards Iwawakiji Temple. Pass by the Shitta Kannon Buddhist images on your way to Fukiji Temple, a great structure that is Kyushu's oldest wooden building. Around the temple, there are restaurants and gift shops, and the area is ideal for taking a break. Pass through an oak grove towards the finish point at Nameshi Dam, where you will see rocky peaks that are said to be inhabited by spirits of nature.
The ancient temples of of the Rokugo Manzan region are national treasures.

Start at Nameshi Dam, which is famous for viewing cherry blossoms in the spring. From the path circling the Dam's reservoir, head halfway up Mount Yayama to Choanji Temple. Then, head down from the mountain towards Tennenji Temple, site of the Shujo Onie festival emblematic of the Rokugo Manzan region, as well as the nearby Kawanaka Fudo stone carvings. The adjoining Onie no Sato facility is a good place to rest. Cross over Tennenji Yaba gorge on the famous Mumyobashi Bridge, and pass by Mudoji Temple, Tsubakido Temple, and Orekiji Temple towards the finish point at Matama Hot Spring's Sansuiso.

Starting from Matama Hot Springs Sansuiso, you will climb Mount Inomure, which is famous for its giant stone circle. Then, head down the mountain towards the region known as Nakayama Senkyo. Traverse the ridge trail and then descend towards Ebisuyaba Noso Koen Park. (The ridge trail of Nakayama Senkyo has some fascinating scenery, but the paths are narrow, and in some places chains are embedded in the rock for climbing over them, making this optional route one for advanced hikers.) Then, go on to three ancient buildings: Reisenji Temple, Jisso-in Temple, and Rokushogu Shrine.

Starting out with passing by Reisenji Temple, Jisso-in Temple, and Rokushogu Shrine, go over the pass at Ushiro no Goe (the border between Bungo Takada City and Kunisaki City), and then head down towards the settlement around Saihoji Temple. When you come down from the pass at Amida Goe, a scenic view known as Ofudo Iwaya will appear before you. Pass by the former site of Kyu-Sentoji Temple,where stone Buddhas and groups of stone pagodas can be found. Then, head to Itsutsuji Fudoson Temple. You can enjoy the view looking over Himeshima Island. The finish point is Iwatoji Temple, which has the oldest "Kunisaki-to" stone pagoda.

Start at Iwatoji Temple, famous for the Shujo Onie festival and its stately stone pagodas. The first half of the trek is along a level trail as you head towards Daijoji Temple. You can check out the groups of stone pagodas and then head to Chokeiji Temple. Once you see Yamaguchi Pond, you have reached the point where you enter more mountainous terrain. Pass through the Iwato Yaba valley, and once you ascend to the remains of the Kuzuhara settlement, the beautiful scenery of areas called Konpira no Kei and Gorota Daira await you. As you enjoy the scenery, you will pass by stone Buddhas and you will reach the finish point at Monjusenji Temple, one of Japan's three great Monju temples.

The starting point is Monjusenji Temple, which is surrounded by the Monju Yaba valley famous throughout Japan. Go along the mountain trail to Kiyotaki Kannon Temple, where pure spring water wells up out of the ground. Then proceed downwards towards Jobutuji Temple, where the Shujo Onie festival is held. Go over Yokoto Goe pass and walk by Taishakudo Temple to arrive at Jinguji Temple, which has charred wooden images of Buddha. After your visit there, head east towards Senpukuji Temple, whose spacious grounds include a hall where a gallery of nationally-important Buddhist relics are held. Follow along the Yokote River, passing by Gyonyuji Temple, towards Gyonyu Dam Park.

The area around the dam has been developed into a park, and here you can enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons.
Start at Gyonyu Dam Park, which is known for its beautiful scenery. Walk along the dam's wall, and then climb up Man no Iwa rock from where you can look over the whole dam. Pass by the area known as Akamatsu no Sato towards Hasama Furuike Pond and Hasama Shinike Pond. As you pass through, take in the sights of the World Agriculture Heritage Site with its oak groves, reservoirs, and stands of wood used to grow shiitake mushrooms. Stop by Maruonoji Temple and then head on to the finish point at Ho-onji Temple (Ho-onji Temple Park).
This area is great for experiencing a World Agricultural Heritage site firsthand.

Start from Ho-onji Temple Park, which is well-known as a place for watching fireflies in the early summer. Stop by Gakutei Jinja Shrine, the site of the traditional event known as "Yoshihiro Gaku", designated as a nationally-important intangible folk culture asset. Visit the former site of Yoshihiro Castle, and pass Saikoji Temple and Kuratani Pass on your way to Nishimusashi Valley. You will arrive at the former house (now a national historical monument) of Miura Baien, a famous thinker from the Edo Period. The finish point is Baien no Sato, which is situated next to the Tenkyukan observatory, which has Oita's largest space telescope.

Start from Baien no Sato, heading down into the Asago valley. Stop by Morotasan Jinja Shrine, where a rice-planting festival is held in March. Go by Hashirimizu Kannon pass, and from the district border you will go up a mountain trail and aim for the 721 meter-high peak of Mount Futago, the highest point of the Kunisaki peninsula. From the summit, you can look over a wide panorama of the Seto Inland Sea. On your way down you will pass by the seven mysteries of Futagoji Temple. You will arrive at Futagoji Temple, famous for its fall foliage and the finish point of the Kunisaki Peninsula Ridge Long Trail.
