Look Before You Leap, - - - - but Leap! Hebrews 12:1-2
Not far from the Harding campus, where a stream curves throughsome farm land, there is a small hill with a short cliff overlooking aswimming hole in a stream. It is a pretty good drop from the top to thewater, but the water pools there and it is a pretty good place to swim.We called it “Bluff Hole.” My roommate and I found several occasions
to visit the bluff and jump from the top into the water. It was a great re-
fresher when the studies had weighed heavy.
Our first visit was a bit tentative. We had been directed there by
some other students, and on arrival we saw some guys in the water aswell as a few diving from a low ledge beneath the cliff. We waded intothe water and enjoyed the refreshment for a while. After a bit, one bravesoul stood at the top of the bluff and leaped. It wasn’t beautiful, but it
caught my attention. When the brave young man’s head surfaced and he
made his way to shore, I made a determination. If he could so it, socould I. My roommate and I each had the same thought. We made our way to the top of the bluff and looked down at the water. It was fairlyclear, but we couldn’t see the bottom. From below, we heard others call-ing on us to leap. Nerves can really get you at a time like that. For vitalyoung men, there was no retreat. It was a “go”. We looked at each
other and stepped into the air. There was a brief second, a splash, andquickly the bottom of the pool. In another second or two, we were on thesurface and ready to go again. It was great, and I am glad we leaped.
An elder once said to me, “I think we have the paralysis of analysis.”
It may be that we spend so much time debating the potential problemsthat we miss the best opportunities. We tend to play in the shallow water of faith when we could be diving from the highest point. Too often weare watching from the spiritual sidelines rather than knowing the thrill of the game. When it comes to faith, it is important to look and know
where it is based, but may be more vital to make the leap. Russ
