A WORD FROM OUR DIRECTOR—

TAMMY ALDRIDGE

The dictionary defines a volunteer as “a person

who does something, especially helping other peo-

ple, willingly and without being forced or paid to do

it.” The Senior Center is very blessed with many

dedicated volunteers who help us each day deliver

Meals on Wheels, serve lunch, teach a class, water

plants, and do “whatever task” that is necessary to

help carry out our mission of “providing opportuni-

ties for senior adults to help maintain and enhance

quality of life.”

The Senior Center appreciates ALL of our volun-

teers! As a way to give a special “shout out” to the

volunteers who go the “extra mile” we have added

a new feature in the newsletter where we

“spotlight” them. We will include this new feature

several times throughout the year— so get ready

volunteers, you might be the next one who is in the

“spotlight!”

In conclusion, we again want to say a big THANK

YOU to ALL of our volunteers who assist us each

and every day in both big and small ways! Join me

and the entire staff in congratulating Bill Morgan as

we recognize him for all the countless ways he

gives back to our Center.

Tammy

This month we spotlight a very special volunteer

at the Senior Center— Bill Morgan. Bill began vol-

unteering at the front desk in January 2018 and

has worked countless afternoon shifts, especially

during this past year’s tax season. He also volun-

teers to serve lunch several times each week, and

helps each month with the Commodity Supple-

mental Food Program. He recently was voted onto

the Senior Center’s Advisory Committee Board.

Bill often visits senior center participants when

they are in the hospital or a nursing home. In ad-

dition, he has become the Center’s personal

“handy man” - from assembling a new sign stand

to recently putting new tips on all the billiard

sticks. Bill is an “all around good asset” to have

around! Join the Senior Center staff in congratu-

lating Bill for this honor and thanking him for all

the hours he has given to help make our Senior

Center the Center of Excellence that it is!

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SENIOR CENTER MONTH

2018 Theme is: “Senior Centers Building Momentum!”

September is Senior Center Month. This year’s theme is “Senior Centers Building Momentum!” This theme was chosen to highlight how senior centers build momentum for aging well in their communi-ties. This year, senior centers celebrate their 75th anniversary. Just as older adults build on their

experiences and lessons learned to create a rich life, senior center professionals are building on les-sons learned from 75 years of experience and wisdom. We now know the research and importance behind connecting older adults with others, and that making friends matter; that learning new lan-

guages and skills and exercising helps care for your body. That giving back at the senior center and within the community fosters purpose and a more meaningful life, and that as long as each of us lives, we want to continue growing to be the most we can be. This year, celebrate the many ways

your senior center build momentum for people’s health, economic security, and independence. The entire staff of the Rutherford County Senior Center strive to make all of these things possible for you.

It is our mission to be the best senior center professionals that we can be!

SHIIP or the Senior Health Insurance Information Program is a consumer in-

formation division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance that provides free,

unbiased counseling about Medicare not just to seniors, but also to people on Medi-

care due to disability. They assist with questions about your health insurance options,

Medicare, Medicare Part D, Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage and long

term care insurance. SHIIP also helps people recognize and prevent Medicare billing

errors and possible fraud and abuse through the NC Senior Medicare Patrol program.

For free, unbiased counseling and to answer questions you may have about

Medicare or the LIS Program, call Rutherford County Senior Center at 287-6409

and schedule an appointment with our trained SHIIP counselor – or contact SHIIP

direct at 1-855-408-1212 or www.ncshiip.com.

Prescription Drug Assistance for Low-Income

Medicare Beneficiaries

The Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) program, also known as Extra Help, assists qualified

Medicare beneficiaries with out-of-pocket expenses associated with Medicare Part D/

prescription drugs. To qualify for Extra Help, a Medicare beneficiary must meet cer-

tain income, resource and asset level requirements. The income and asset limits for

Extra Help are: $1,538/per month with assets up to $14,100 if you are single; and

$2,078/per month with assets up to $28,150 if you are a married couple living to-

gether. This includes your monthly earnings, Social Security and Veterans'

benefits, disability payments, cash contributions, retirements and pensions. Re-

sources and assets include the value of items you own, cash, stocks, bonds, retire-

ment accounts, the value of a second car, boats and any real property that is not the

primary residence and does not produce income. Depending on your income and

asset levels and the Part D plan you choose, you may have either a reduced premi-

um or no premium; your deductible may be covered or lowered; and your prescription

copayments will be very small – from $3.35 for a generic drug and up to $8.35 for a

brand-name drug. But perhaps the two biggest benefits to any amount of Extra Help/

LIS assistance will be the elimination of a Part D coverage gap, also known as the

“donut hole,” and the opportunity to change Prescription Drug Plans at any time. Call

Rutherford County Senior Center 287-6409 and schedule an appointment to speak

with our trained counselor to see if you quality for this program.
