From OurBoard President & Executive DirectorDear Friends,

2019 was a landmark year for the Pennsylvania Innocence Project as we celebrated our ten-year anniversary. The Project was founded by a group of visionaries in 2008, to address the alarming problem of a remarkable number of people held in Pennsylvania prisons who had powerful claims of actual innocence. When we opened our doors in 2009, we were almost immediately greeted with over 300 letters from incarcerated people waiting for our help. Since then, working with many outstanding and deeply committed pro bono partners, we have freed and secured exonerations for 17 people convicted of crimes they did not commit. We have freed another 4 people who are still fighting to prove their innocence.

In 2019, we were thrilled to welcome home Willie Veasy, John Miller, Larry Trent Roberts, and Chester Hollman, all of whom were exonerated through our work. Together they served 90 years — almost a century — in prison as innocent men. Each was arrested while young and robbed of the opportunity to attend college or learn a trade, start a family, begin careers, and enjoy the prime years of their lives. Each exoneree fought many years to prove his innocence and gain his freedom.

In the fall, we had the great pleasure of celebrating our tenth anniversary with many of you at major events in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. In Philadelphia, we joined together at the fitting venue of the National Constitution Center, and in Pittsburgh we did so at the new offices of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, the law firm of our outgoing Board President, Howard Scher. We had the honor of hearing at both events from Dr. Yusef Salaam, one of “The Exonerated Five,” who was wrongly convicted in 1990 of a highly publicized rape in New York’s Central Park. We also had the opportunity to honor at these events each of our 17 exonerees, and to recognize and honor the vital work of our former Executive Director, Marissa Bluestine. The enthusiasm and support for our work was palpable at these events, making them tremendous successes.

What began as a vision a decade ago is now a powerful force for the innocent throughout the Commonwealth, with a staff of ten and offices in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. In addition to our litigation work, our Transition to Innocence program, conceived of in 2018, really took root and thrived in 2019. We are proud to be able to connect with and assist our exonerated clients through this facilitated peer group program. And we continued in 2019 to focus on important policy initiatives, including the need to obtain clemency for certain innocent inmates who, because of procedural hurdles or other issues, may have no other form of relief.

We have transitioned smoothly into our second decade, and we are poised and excited to take on the many challenges that continue to face us. Perhaps the most difficult part of our work is knowing how long an innocent person remains in prison while fighting for their freedom and knowing how many innocent people remain in prison in part because we simply cannot address every case at once. The average exoneration case takes between 7 and 13 years of complex, time consuming litigation. And we continue to receive approximately 500 letters each year from Pennsylvanians who seek our assistance.

With your support we fight for justice for the innocent in Pennsylvania, day in and day out. Your support enables us to continue to grow, and our continued growth enables us to seek justice for more and more individuals.

Prevented wrongful convictions

We work with prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, & defense attorneys to adopt the use of evidence-based investigative techniques.

We consult on wrongful convictions law & forensic science throughout the Commonwealth.

Advocated for changes in the law

We helped secure passage of two important pieces of Pennsylvania legislation, which improve the process of seeking justice for wrongly convicted.

Secured the exoneration of 17 people

Together, these men & women have spent a combined 395 "lost years" in prison.

An average case, from our initial review to exoneration, takes 7-13 years.

We've received mail from more than 6,000 inmates seeking our help. Currently, we receive over 500 requests each year.

Provided support for exonerees

We host a bi-weekly peer-to-peer support group, "Transition to Innocence," co-facilitated by an exoneree & our social worker.

We provide case management services with our social worker.

Litigated across the Commonwealth

Our work has taken us throughout the following counties: Allegheny, Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Erie, Fayette, Lehigh, Luzerne, Philadelphia, Westmoreland, & York.

In our first 10 years, we had over 20 cases in court at any given time, as well as dozens more being investigated to prepare for litigation. We completed review of over 1,000 cases.

Educated a new generation

We have worked with 1,300 law students, from every law school in the Commonwealth.
