Vandag se voertuie word deur komplekse rekenaars en geïnte- greerde elektroniese stelsels be- heer. Dis waarom programma- tuur van Volkswagen om die motors se uitlaatgasse te beheer dit kon regkry om slegs aktief te raak in amptelike toetse, terwyl hul uitlaatgasvlakke in werklik- heid baie hoër as die wetlik toe- laatbare perk is. Die werk van motorwerktuig- kundiges het die afgelope jare ’n groot klemverskuiwing onder- gaan van suiwer meganiese werk tot ’n meer tegnologiese benade- ring. Daar is ’n groot behoefte aan motorwerktuigkundiges wat gerekenariseerde toerusting kan gebruik en met elektroniese komponente kan werk, maar ook hul slag met tradisionele meganiese gereedskap behou, sê Les McMaster, voorsitter van die werkwinkelvereniging van die motorbedryf (Miwa). “Die behoefte aan werkwinkel- tegnici wat op ’n meer ingewik- kelde vlak kan werk, is nie net groot in Suid-Afrika nie, maar wêreldwyd en heelwat van ons toptegnici word deur internasio- nale maatskappye weggerokkel.” Dit is nie verbasend as ’n mens in ag neem dat Amerika se buro vir arbeidstatistieke reeds in 2012 voorspel het dat die aan- tal werkgeleenthede vir motor- werktuigkundiges in daardie land teen 2020 met 17%, of ’n bykomende 124 800 werkge- leenthede, sou styg nie. Die groeiende aanvraag na motorwerktuigkundiges word aan die groei in die aantal voer- tuie toegeskryf, asook die feit dat nuwe voertuie ’n langer leef- tyd op die pad het en die toene- mende gebruik van gevorderde tegnologie, soos hibridiese brandstofstelsels. “Omdat die behoefte aan vaar- dige werkers die aanbod begin oorskry, sal dié motortegnici met opleiding in gevorderde mo- tortegnologie, soos rekenaarstel- sels, baie goeie werkvooruitsigte in die buiteland hê,” sê McMas- ter. Maar daar is ook ’n groot be- hoefte aan vaardige en goed op- geleide motorwerktuigkundiges in Suid-Afrika. Volgens McMaster kan ’n spesialistegnikus ’n heel respektabele salaris hier verdien – afhangende van sy vlak van kundigheid en ervaring. “ ’n Goeie spesialismotor- tegnikus kan tot R35 000 of meer per maand verdien.” Die motorherstelbedryf is ook ’n bedryf wat die vorming van kleinsakeondernemings, wat ’n groot werkskepper in Suid-Afrika is, aanmoedig. Werkwinkeltegnici verrig ’n eiesoortige werk wat die vermoë vereis om daagliks teoretiese kennis met praktiese probleem- oplossing te integreer. Hoewel die werk grootliks die instand- houding en herstel van ligte mo- torvoertuie behels, hou dit nie meer net met meganiese herstel- werk verband nie, maar ook met werk aan elektroniese stelsels en rekenaars. McMaster verduidelik dat teg- nici ook heelwat moet weet van hoe komplekse dele van die voertuig saamwerk. “Motorwerktuigkundiges moet in staat wees om met elektronie- se toerusting te werk, die toerus- ting se handleidings verstaan en masjinerie wat rekenaaraange- drewe is kan herstel, terwyl hul- le ook moet weet hoe om die krag- en handgereedskap wat steeds algemeen in gebruik is te hanteer. Omdat daar soveel ver- skillende dele aan ’n voertuig is, spesialiseer sommige motor- werktuigkundiges daarin om net een onderdeel te herstel. Som- miges sal byvoorbeeld net rem- me herstel terwyl ander uitsluit- lik aan verkoelingstelsels werk. “Dit is ’n werk waar jy jou hand op die probleem kan lê en dit kan regmaak – dus is dit ’n baie bevredigende beroep,” sê McMaster. Probleemoplossing is ’n nood- saaklike vaardigheid as jy ’n loopbaan as motorwerktuigkun- dige oorweeg. Wiskunde en re- kenaarwetenskap is ook goeie vakke om te neem as jy in hier- die loopbaanrigting belang stel. Formele opleiding sowel as in- diensopleiding is noodsaaklik. “Daar is ’n hele aantal goeie kursusse wat jy kan volg om ’n gesertifiseerde motorwerktuig- kundige te word, terwyl dit hoogs aan te beveel is dat jy jou vakleerlingskap by ’n werkwin- kel doen terwyl jy nog studeer.” Die meeste motorwerktuigkun- diges sal hul loopbaan begin deur vir ’n werkwinkel te werk en eers ’n aantal jaar se praktie- se ervaring op te doen voordat hulle hul eie onderneming open. Daar is ook ’n groot aantal ge- kwalifiseerde tegnici in Suid-Afri- ka wat op hul eie na onafhank- like werkwinkels gaan, terwyl ander vir handelaars of onder- dele-verskaffers gaan werk. Daar word vooraf hieroor met die werk-nemer ooreengekom en die proeftydperk moet re-delik wees. Die werkge-wer moet dit duidelik aan die werknemer stel dat hy op proef aange-stel is asook wat die duur van die proeftyd-perk is.

Onthou die doel van ’n proeftydperkis om die werknemer se werkpeil te meet en sodoende vas te stel of hy die werk vir die spesifieke pos op ’n aan-vaarbare vlak kan doen voordat hy per-manent aangestel word. Daar is geen plig op die werkgewer om ’n werkne-mer permanent aan te stel as hy nie die werk bevredigend kan doen nie.

Die proeftydperk moet redelik en bil-lik wees sodat die werknemer se werk-peil behoorlik getoets kan word. Dit is heel waarskynlik dat jou man se werk-gewer binne ’n maand tot die gevolg-trekking gekom het dat hy nie vir die pos geskik is nie.

Vir sommige poste kan daar baie vin-nig vasgestel word of ’n werknemer die werk na behore kan doen, soos byvoor-beeld iemand wat sweis. So ’n persoon sal nie drie maande benodig om te be-wys hy is ’n goed gekwalifiseerde swei-

ser nie. Ander beroepe benodigmeer tyd om te bewys

die werknemer kan ditbaasraak, afhangendevan die ingewikkeld-heid van die werk.Die belangrike puntis net dat die proef-tydperk redelik moet

wees ongeag of diteen of drie maande is.Die werknemer moet

weet wat die standaard iswat die werkgewervan hom vereis. Diewerknemer moet ookaltyd sy beste leweren besef dat hy aandie werkgewer se

standaarde moet voldoen om daar te kan werk.

Die proeftydperk moet redelik teen-oor sowel die werkgewer as die werk-nemer wees.

Dit is belangrik dat die werknemer weet hy is net vir ’n proeftydperk aan-gestel en dit is aanbeveelbaar dat dit al-tyd op skrif gestel word om moontlike dispute te vermy. Die werkgewer moet die werknemer voortdurend gedurende die proeftydperk evalueer en terugvoe-ring gee sodat hy weet of sy werkpeil aanvaarbaar is.

As ’n werknemer nie aan die vereistesvoldoen nie, moet die werkgewer ont-slag slegs as ’n laaste opsie oorweeg.

Die werkgewer kan die proeftydperk verleng en hy moet die nodige leiding en opleiding aan die werknemer bied asook genoeg tyd om sy werkpeil te probeer verbeter.

Het die werkgewer dit met jou man gedoen? Hou in gedagte dat die werkge-wer nie die proeftydperk hoef te ver-leng nie. In sekere gevalle sal meer tyd en opleiding nie help nie en net tot na-deel van albei partye wees.

As jou man meen sy werkgewer het nie regverdig opgetree nie, kan hy die aangeleentheid na die Kommissie vir Versoening, Bemiddeling en Arbitrasie (KVBA) verwys as ’n dispuut oor sy proeftydperk.

Wat  moet  ek  doen  as  my  salaris  elke maand  laat  is?Ek werk vir ’n makelaar en my salaris en kommissie word elke maand laat be-taal. Ek weet as ek daaroor gaan kla dat ek ’n waarskuwing gaan ontvang en my werk kan verloor.

Ek kan nie bekostig om my werk te verloor nie, maar kan ook nie elke maand my salaris laat ontvang nie. Wat staan my te doen?

AntwoordJy sê nie wanneer jy jou salaris kry nie. Dit maak dit moeilik om vas te stel of jou werkgewer wel jou salaris laat be-taal, want kragtens art. 32 (3) van die Wet op Basiese Diensvoorwaardes moet ’n werkgewer salarisse betaal binne se-we dae ná die voltooiing van die tyd-perk waarvoor die werkgewer vergoed word, of die dienskontrak beëindig is.

Ek stel voor dat jy die kwessie met jou werkgewer bespreek en jou per-soonlike situasie aan hom verduidelik.

Jy moet ook met jou bank reëlings tref en byvoorbeeld reël dat jou aftrek-orders later afgaan of miskien reël vir ’n oortrokke gerief om jou deur die eerste paar dae te help.

As jou werkgewer jou egter baie laatin die volgende maand betaal, soos by-voorbeeld eers op die tiende van die maand, en nie gehoor wil gee aan jou versoek én wetgewing nie, kan jy die

saak na die departement van arbeid verwys. Jou werkgewer sal jou nie bloot as gevolg van jou versoek om betyds be-taal te word, kan ontslaan nie.

Ontslag moet substansieel en prosedu-reel regverdig wees, wat beteken jou werkgewer moet ’n goeie rede hê om jou dienste te beëindig en ook die kor-rekte prosedure volg deur ’n dissiplinê-re verhoor te hou. Dit is belangrik dat jy altyd eers probeer om ’n probleem intern op ’n professionele en respekvol-le manier op te los voordat jy van ek-sterne hulpbronne gebruik maak.

Kan  ek  geld  eerder  as  verlof  vra?Ek wil graag weet of ek my werkgewer kan versoek om my jaarlikse verlof eer-der aan my uit te betaal in plaas daar-van dat ek my verlof neem.

Ek het die ekstra geld nodig en gee nie om om nie hierdie jaar met vakan-sie te gaan.

Suid-Afrikaanse wetgewing is baie duidelik dat die werkgewer verlof aan die werknemer moet toestaan.

Art. 20(11) van die Wet op Basiese Diensvoorwaardes bepaal uitdruklik ’n werkgewer mag nie ’n werknemer be-taal in plaas van verlof toestaan nie, buiten by die beëindiging van diens waar die werkgewer verplig is om jou uitstaande verlofdae aan jou uit te betaal.
