SynopsisThenovelbeginswithagroupofBritishboysbeingairliftedfromanuclearwarinEngland.TheirplaneisshotdownoveradesertedislandinthePacificOcean.Soonalltheboysgathertogetherandrealizethatthereareno“adults”ontheisland.Confusedaboutwhattodowithoutauthority,theyelectRalphastheirleader.Jackwouldliketobetheleaderofthewholegroup,buthesettlesforbeingthechiefofthehunters.Theboysdiscoverthattheycanstartfiresbyallowingthesuntoshinethroughoneboy’sglasses.Ralphconcentratesonkeepingafiregoing,whileJackandhishunterssearchforpigsontheisland.ResentingRalph’sauthority,Jackquicklycomestodislikehim.Althoughtheystartoutasfriends,theirrelationshipdeteriorates,andtheybecomebitterenemies.Jackdeclareshimselftheleaderofhisowngroupandrecruitsmostoftheboysontheisland,promisingthattheywillhavefunandeat.Ralphstillfocusesonthefire,eventhoughhehasfewmembersleftinhisgroup.Eventually,Ralphisalone.HemustprotecthimselffromJack’sgroupofsavages.Theboysarefinallyrescuedattheendofthebook.
Manyoftheboyshavedied,andthesurvivorshaveallturnedoneachother.Lifeontheislandisamicrocosmoflifeinthelargerwar-tornworld.
HistoricalBackgroundLordoftheFliesissetinEnglandinanunnamedtimeofwar,sometimearoundthe1950s.ThenovelwaswrittenshortlyaftertheendofWorldWarII,however,whichmanyoftheeventsinthestoryseemtoecho.Englandhadbeenhitveryhardinthewar,anditscitizensworriedaboutcompletedestruction.Britainendedthesix-yearwartriumphantoverGermany,butitspeoplewerebankruptandhungry.MuchofEuropelayinruins,andyoungmenhadbeenlost.Itwasnotuncommonforparentstotrytosendtheirchildrenoutofthecountryforsafety,butmostBritishchildrenwereforcedtowitnessthebrutalityofwartime.WorldWarIIwasaprimeexampleofthehumanamoralitythatWilliamGoldingoftendiscussed.EuropewaswitnesstotheHolocaust,whichhasstayedintheheartsandmindsofitscitizenslongafterthewarwasover.MillionsofJewsandotherswerepersecuted,imprisoned,andkilledbyGermanNazisundertheleadershipofAdolfHitler.Bythetimethenovelwaswritten,thefirstatomicbombhadbeendroppedandthewholeworldfearedatotalnuclearwar,especiallyonebegunbytheSoviets.LordoftheFliesfocusesonthetenseandhorrifictimesofwarthatBritainrecentlyhadexperienced.
AbouttheAuthorWilliamGolding,bornonSeptember19,1911,inCornwall,England,wasnostrangertothethemeofwar.AftergraduatingfromOxfordUniversityinLondonwithadegreeinEnglish,hejoinedtheRoyalNavywhenEnglandenteredWorldWarII.Eventually,hebecamealieutenantandwasinvolvedinthesinkingoftheBismarckaswellasDdayoperations.Followingwartimeevents,GoldingtaughtataschoolforboysinSalisbury,England.Movedbyhismemoriesofwaranditsbrutality,hewroteLordoftheFliesduringhistimeteaching.Hewasknowntohaveaverypessimisticviewofhumanity.WhenaskedaboutthethemeofLordoftheFlies,Goldingresponded,“Humannatureisinherentlycorruptibleandwicked.”Hehadwitnessedfirsthandthehorrorshumansinflictonotherswhenplacedinanuncontrolledatmosphere,andhewrotethenovelinpart
toshowthatevenchildrenarenotexemptfromtheseevils.
