SENIOR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL (SEE STORY)

This past month, we celebrated students’ academic achievements, volleyball success, as well as shared our vision of blended math with five other Saskatchewan school divisions and thirty teachers from within Sun West School Division. It is my belief that when you walk into any business or school you should be able to see what they believe is important. As you walk through our school I am hoping that the displays and the language used shows you that our school believes reading is important as well as preparing students through the 7 habits of highly effective people to be the best that they can be after they leave our building. Our reading goal states 100% of students will increase their reading by one level or be reading at their grade level by June 2016. Our leadership goal states that we would like to reach lighthouse school status by June 2017. The staff along with the School Community Council (SCC) work together to accomplish both school goals.

What does "Lighthouse School" mean?

The Leader in Me Lighthouse School title is awarded by Franklin Covey to honor the attainment of a well-rounded leadership model. Lighthouse Schools serve as models of leadership and mentors to other schools. It is sort of like getting your black belt. Currently, there are 161 Lighthouse Schools worldwide, 9 being in Canada.

How do we become a Lighthouse School?

Every school has the potential to be a Lighthouse School. Lighthouse Schools have achieved extraordinary results by meeting the standards laid out in the Lighthouse Criteria. There are 9 criteria that have been identified as critical to the development of a leadership culture.

LCS NEWSLETTER – DECEMBER 2015

One thing I would like to stop doing is...

My biggest dream is…..

On-line Bullying Presentation – (picture – right) On Tuesday, Nov 17th our grades 5-10 students participated in alongside more than 9,000 Saskatchewan students from Grades 6 through 12 in the province’s largest ever Student First Anti-Bullying Forum. The online forum and presentation kicked off this morning with a live broadcast from Regina’s Campbell Collegiate to schools across the province where students watched in real time. Students got an opportunity to hear from Education Minister Don Morgan and University of Regina Professor, Dr. Alec Couros. Dr. Alec Couros was very entertaining and spoke about how to be safe and respectful online. Students then learned about the “I Am Stronger” website http://iamstronger.ca. This page is an initiative designed to stop the activities of bullying and cyber-bullying. This is done through awareness and education around cyber safety, the effects of bullying, and supporting youth-led initiatives. On this website is lots of bullying resources for kids, teens, families, and educators as well as links of the different ways to report online bullying. Students also learned that The Ministry of Education has partnered up with “I Am Stronger” to provide small grants of up to $1000 for youth-led initiatives to address bullying and cyber-bullying within the province of Saskatchewan. The goal is to empower youth to take their ideas and turn them into positive action that can influence social change in schools, communities and online.

Second Blended Math Leadership Day

On Tuesday, November 24th, LCS hosted educators from within the school division and the province to come see firsthand our blended math program that they hope to implement in their own environments. Quote from a former student:

On my way back from Saskatoon yesterday, I met one of the attendees when I was getting gas at the card lock. I'm terrible with names but they said everyone was raving about the content and how well LCS did hosting. Made me feel pretty proud that I graduated from there and some of the teachers that taught me are still there! Jason Wong

Loreburn/Davidson Senior Girls Volleyball

Provincial Champions! (Picture on front)

The senior girls’ volleyball team finished their season on Saturday, November 21st as the SHSAA 2A Provincial Champions in Porcupine Plain, beating a great team from Invermay in three games in the gold medal match.

Raitec started their championship run weeks ago, with the provincial tournament as the final step in a successful season. At provincials, Raitec finished second in their pool during round robin play, after victories against Langham, Porcupine Plain, and St. Walburg and a loss to Invermay. This resulted in a crossover playoff where the team recorded wins in straight sets against Kerrobert followed by a semi-final straight set win against Foam Lake.

The final match was one of the most exciting matches we played all year, with a final score of 25-22, 28-30, and 25-19. Invermay was a great offensive team, and they passed very well; both of these are also areas of strength for us, so the fans were treated to a very entertaining match. In the end, our experience at 3A provincials last year helped us to stay focused on our goal of a gold medal.

Raitec provincial champions are grade 12 players Jacey Sanden, Karissa Rendall, Kaitlyn Baldwin, Jackie Losie, and Maddy Vollmer; grade 11 players Miranda Farrell, Jessica “Killer” Matheson, and Jamie Sarich, and grade 10 players Brianna Jess, Emily Read, Tori Rendall, Lyndzey Sanden, Kaitlyn Glubis, and Gracie Allan. Raitec would like to thank the staffs at Loreburn Central School and Davidson School for their support this year, especially for helping us stay caught up at school when we had to miss for volleyball. The girls also really appreciated the fans who made the trip to Porcupine Plain. It was very cool to be playing in front of a supportive crowd, especially when we were so far from home.

Before the provincial championships, other gold medal performances for Raitec during the 2015 season were at tournaments at Davidson, Assiniboia, Porcupine Plain, Beechy, Humboldt, Kahkewistahaw, Hanley, and Outlook, the Conference championship at Davidson, and the Regional championship at Arcola. Coaches: Tony Baldwin, Sandra Baldwin and Karen McConnell

Co-ops Work Wonders Davidson School and community wishes to extend congratulations to the Senior Girls on their provincial victory. We would also like to sincerely thank the girls, their families, and your school/community for your support, commitment, and dedication during the year. The Raitec partnership has been a fantastic example of a Co-op bringing out the best in students as they pursue a common goal. We are very proud to have been on this journey with you!

Senior Boys 4A Provincials in La Loche The Senior Boys travelled to La Loche on the weekend to take part in the SHSAA 4A Provincial Playoffs. They battled hard, starting out with a game against La Loche in an exciting, electric atmosphere. During the weekend, we battled hard in every game winning two and losing three but pushing every team except SCA to three sets and ultimately finishing in 5th place. The boys proved how determined and athletic they were and were exceptional ambassadors for their schools, coaches and communities. Throughout the weekend there were displays and numerous activities for the athletes to learn about the Dené culture including dream catcher making, dancing and language lessons. Thank you boys for a great year and let’s get ready for next year.
