Eco Schools As we have limited extra-curriculars at this point, one that is up and running is the Malaise Club. This group of student from grade 1 – 5 will be working with Mr. K and Ms. Mininni to monitor the 2 week Malaise Trap set up. The trap is set up in the No Mow Zone and will be there collecting insects for 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks, the collected insects are sent back to Bio Canada at the University of Guelph and they will be DNA barcoded. We will receive a report in December which will show the biodiversity on the property. The club will share these results with our community and will help our Growing Club determine which native species will be best for the No Mow Zone. It is some high level science and learning right here at LP! Performances Thank you to the School Council for their continued support of the arts performances for this year. We have booked 3 performances. We have a hip-hop breakdancing group coming in October, The Dufflebag theatre is here in February, and Infinitus is here in May. Kindergarten and Primary classes performed the Holiday Zoobilee on December 9th to a large crowd. The performance was a huge success and the students did an incredible job with just 3 weeks of practice. The school is planning to do a similar performance in April with the Junior Grades. It is going to be a very busy spring. Math-a-thon is coming up, skating, an outdoor education trip for all grades, movie nights, parent presentations, performances, so stay tuned for all the great activities that will be happening. School Success: Staff will once again begin working within a Triad of Schools (LP, Owenwood, and Clarkson) on school success initiatives. The focus is on numeracy. The school will continue to focus on problem solving through rich tasks, math talk, and communicating thinking. Staff at LP will also be setting their own professional growth goals in numeracy and will be working in small collaborative teams. Many are looking at problem solving, accountable talk in math, and math experiences in the outdoors. There are 4 teachers taking part in a 4 month pilot for an online math program called Dreambox. The Instructional Coach is also working in a couple of classrooms to co plan and co teach lessons in math. She is a wonderful resource that shares the board and ministry goals with teachers as they implement these into daily practice. The Instructional Technology Resource Teacher joined the staff meeting yesterday to share technology tools and apps that support collaborative work with staff and students. Teachers created a Google classroom for professional learning and will use Google Docs as a way to document their small group professional learning. The Resource Teacher will be joining the teachers each month to explore ways they can use our school technology to strengthen collaboration. School Malaise Trap Update: Results have been shared from the fall Malaise Trap program. Lorne Park ranked #2 in Canada with the number of specimens collected (3120) over the two week period. 137 different species were collected. The data will be handed over to teachers to share with students. It is amazing to see the biodiversity on the school property. Activities coming up: The school has booked March 4th for skating. They are also looking at dates for an Outdoor Education Experience as they have received $1500 in funding from the Ministry. JungleSport is booked for the last week of April and will coordinate having it open one night for our families. Parent Reaching Out: Scott Graham Presentation Date: February 10 at 6:30pm Sharon Zintel Math Night: March 30 at 6:30pm

3. Treasurer’s Report: Duncan Warren

Chocolate Sales for Playground Fundraiser raised $8k. It was a great success. Increased Allocated Funding for several Wish List Items: Jungle Sport; Field

Trips ($15 per child for teachers to use for Field Trips); Outdoor Education; Skating.

Pizza forms are coming for second round. Pizza Sales are our biggest moneymaker at the moment, up from past years. We still have 8 Pizza Days left before the second run begins. Another success.

Remaining Fundraising Initiatives: Pizza; Movie Nights; Craft Show; Math-A-Thon. Amounts shown are based on last year’s figures.

Anticipated Cash Balance for Year End: approximately $11k. We are able to meet goals and will have a surplus at the moment. If there is a surplus at the end of the year – we will need to vote about what to do with it.

We normally allocate $5-7k for startup of the new school year. Should this be adjusted or removed? The Board indicated that we do not need it, that typically schools spend and recover through fundraising initiatives.

We can use the surplus for an earmarked fundraising initiative, possibly the playground. General agreement.

Proposal made to publish Wish List items to the school community letting them know that any surplus will be allocated to Wish List funds. General agreement. Will vote on this next meeting.

4. Fundraising Activities Report: Jen Tsuji and Joni Mann Craft Show: Jen Tsuji

Craft Show will take place April 23. Will return to Fall Craft Show next school year. First meeting occurred this morning – very positive. Looking for volunteers – on the day of, and for planning if you’re interested –

let Jason or Jen know. 20 Vendors confirmed for Spring, carried over from Fall. Some new vendors – more diversity – Christmas swapped for

gardening/Spring theme in general. Big moneymakers in past were Silent Auction, Bake Sale, Vendors, Donations Community Garage Sale proposed, and general agreement upon this as a

great idea, but during the Craft Sale there is no room. General Agreement – this is a good idea to hold at another time, either before others in community such as Christchurch (April/May), or even in Fall.

BBQ with Bouncy Castle proposed. In the interest of time, suggestion was made to bring this idea to the Craft Show Committee. Given there are many regulations surrounding Bouncy Castles and liability, it is important to check into these and obtain proper approvals. See Jason.

rather deciding guidelines for if Jason was to leave - what would we want to see in his replacement? All in favour.

School Success: If you have a child in Ms. Mininni’s, Ms. Killeen’s or Ms. Clubb-Miculis’ class, you may hear your child talking about a new online program called Dreambox. LP is part of a 4-month pilot project that will begin shortly. This program is problem solving based and designed to build conceptual understanding in math. 30 schools in Peel are taking part in this and we were excited to be selected for it. Staff will also begin some Numeracy release day work in the next couple of weeks. They will be working with Clarkson and Owenwood staff to look a little more closely at problem solving, learning goals and success criteria. One area of focus is to clearly share with students what the learning goal is for students and to have them self-assess their work related to criteria that they have created with their teacher. The Instructional Coach will help facilitate these sessions and staff certainly value the collaborative work that happens on these days. Activities coming up: We are excited for skating next Friday at Clarkson Community Centre. Thanks to Council for funding this great physical activity. It is always a lot of fun. On March 30, from 6:00 – 7:30pm, all families are invited to Family Math Games Night at LP. The gym will be transformed into a math haven including games, cards, and other activities. The school wants parents to come and celebrate math with their children. Students will have a passport and when they complete a game or activity, they will get a signature from a staff member. When they complete their passports, they will receive a small prize. It is going to be a lot of fun and we are really hoping that our whole school community will show up. Please spread the word! All classes will be participating in an Outdoor Education Experience as well in the next month and a half. Kindergarten students are heading to MapleTown at Mountsberg Conservation area and the Gr 1 – 5 classes will be heading to Terra Cotta Conservation area. The cost of these excursions is covered by our Outdoor Education grant and fundraising from School Council so they will be free for students. Staff are also starting to look at field trips to take advantage of the additional enrichment funds from the School Council. Education Week is coming up in April and the school will be hosting a number of activities including a Grandparent’s Tea and the Junior Performance. JungleSport will also join us the last week of April and this enrichment activity is also going to be free for students. Thanks again to Council for using enrichment funds to cover the cost.

raised will be used for enrichment activities, and income will include funds from the second Pizza orders, as well as the Math-a-thon and Craft Show.

Still on target for $11-12k surplus at end of the year. Will wait to vote on what we’ll do with any surplus until we know actual

numbers 4. Fundraising Activities Report:

Craft Show: Jen Tsuji In planning stage April 23 date is confirmed 30 vendors are now confirmed – some old and some new. There’s a waitlist.

Our maximum is 55 vendors, but we will be fine even with 50. We will need helpers for set up and take down as well as bakers. The Bake

Sale room is a big success usually. The Silent Auction has up to $5000 in donations already, not including

experiential items. Will send home an info sheet in March. Booths are $65 with some extras for outlets, etc. New Sponsor for Lawn Signs – Oxford Learning Center Next Meeting – April 13th Craft Show is the last fundraiser of the year

Math-a-thon: Jen Tsuji Getting close to meeting our participation goal but not quite there. It is

normal that lots of pledges come in at the end. We want to get everyone involved, even if it’s just one pledge of one dollar.

Movie Night: Mark Waschkowski Elena and Jeff are willing to stay on to help, but are not able to take it over.

Mark and Kate will run it next week. Pizza supplier under discussion. Family Entry Fee and Meal that were brought up last meeting, actually add a

lot of complexity from an accounting perspective. This can be addressed on an individual basis; if there is a family in need, the school will help them out.

Water bottles are being recycled. Perhaps phase out selling bottled water next school year.

On track to meet fundraising target.

5. Other Business: Jen Tsuji Move It May Run by Joni M. and Mr. K. Includes obstacle courses, Zumba, “retro” games

like double-dutch skipping, etc. All volunteers - those who are involved in sports in any way in the

community come in at lunch. Ask those you know if they would like to volunteer

Jungle Sports will be tied in this year Any parents with any form of athletic background are encouraged to

participate Any ideas, please come forward with them – focus is FUN and FITNESS

Playground Brochures and ordering of any element will happen once we know how

urgent the situation is based on the evaluation by the Board of Education early in the Spring

Grants for Accessibility Adaptations – we would fall under this and may have the rubberized surface completely covered

Grant Applications – putting application together and getting approval from Board for Trillium

Should put up info on playground during Math Night – Committee will meet before to plan this out

Duncan proposed a model to display. Committee will enquire with company. Promote donations through Canada Helps. Tom E. proposed sending out a communication, on behalf of School Council,

to parents: “A Day for Play: Donate a day of your pay so that your kids can play.” He would start the donations. We need approval by the Board for corporate sponsors, but individual parents can donate, without needing Board approval, through Canada Helps.
