We’re Here for Our Community’s Healthcare NeedsOur community’s health is at the heart of everything we do at Saddleback Medical Center. For more than 40 years, we’ve been here to welcome new lives into the world, help older adults live healthy lifestyles and provide compassionate care for all healthcare needs. As we move forward, we do so carefully and responsibly with the safety of our patients, staff and physicians always as our top priority. For your good health, it’s vitally important that you seek medical treatment when necessary and appropriate.
Our Emergency Department team is highly trained and experienced in caring for all patients, including those who need immediate care for heart attack, severe injuries, or any other emergent medical injury or illness. We have taken extra measures to ensure the continued safety, exceptional care and well-being of all our patients and staff, with a special area to treat patients coming in with COVID-19 symptoms and a separately designated area for noninfectious disease patients.
Throughout our hospital and outpatient care areas, we have implemented additional precautions to safeguard your health and the health of our staff, including:
Observing social distancing with spaced seating in our waiting areas and properly spaced floor markings in areas where lines form
Screening individuals at all of our medical center entrances for symptoms and taking their temperatures before allowing entry into the facility
Ensuring everyone who enters our facilities wears a facial covering, and all of our clinical staff members wear face masks and abide by all personal protective equipment guidelines, in addition to stringent compliance with hand hygiene (washing hands regularly and applying hand sanitizer before entering a patient room)
Adhering to strict compliance with disinfecting and cleaning equipment and frequently touched areas across the hospital and outpatient care areas
For non-emergent medical conditions or injuries, we encourage you to take advantage of other services offered by MemorialCare, including setting up a virtual appointment with your doctor, speaking with an advice nurse over the phone, or visiting a MemorialCare urgent care location, if necessary.
We are here for your care, no matter the need. For more information, please visit memorialcare.org/WereHere.
Sincerely,
Marcia MankerMarcia Manker, CEO

The Bonding RoomPassionate about turning parenting dreams into a reality, Jane Frederick, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., has been helping couples for 30 years through her work as a specialist in infertility and reproductive endocrinology. In 2013, she funded the Bonding Room at The Women’s Hospital at Saddleback Medical Center in response to her patients who felt alienated at hospitals as intended parents using surrogacy.
“The Bonding Room at The Women’s Hospital is a really special place where intended parents can celebrate the birth of their child,” says Dr. Frederick. “I’m so happy that Saddleback Medical Center made this commitment to their community, allowing everyone to have a special birthing experience, no matter their circumstances.”
“Dr. Frederick’s generous gift for the Bonding Room has been so important for all the families who have been able to use it,” said Cecilia Belew, president of Saddleback Medical Center Foundation. “With so many years as a pioneer in the world of fertility and surrogacy, she truly understands how special those first moments are between the families and their new baby.”
Donations to Saddleback Medical Center Foundation, large or small, make a lasting impact on patients throughout the hospital. Visit memorialcare.org/smcf or call (949) 452-3724 to donate.
CareConnection | Summer 2020 When it came to choosing a hospital for the delivery, The Women’s Hospital at Saddleback Medical Center was a clear choice for the sisters. It is the only hospital in Orange County that has a Bonding
Room, a dedicated space for parents like Zulma to bond with their babies after birth. The room is just down the hall from the labor and delivery suites at The Women’s Hospital, so intended parents can be there when their children are born. Zulma and Leonel spent the night in the Bonding Room with their daughter, who they named after Zulma’s sister.
Now, a little over a year after baby Marisol was born, Marisol is carrying Zulma’s second child, who is due in early September. The sisters plan to go through with one more pregnancy in the future.
The hospital remains the safest place to deliver your baby. The Women’s Hospital at Saddleback Medical Center offers some of the most advanced care for mothers and newborns. Additionally, we have the lowest C-section delivery rates for low-risk births for first-time moms in south Orange County.* Lower C-section delivery rates means shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery and lower risk of complications for mothers and babies. Visit memorialcare.org/baby for more information and to learn about special safety protocols we have in place.

“Zulma was with me

It was a beautiful
experience for us.”
A MemorialCare Miracle: Zulma finds her way to parenthood through surrogacyZulma Vega, 42, comes from a very tight-knit family with three inseparable sisters. Like many women, she dreamt of meeting the perfect husband and starting her own family when the time was right. Zulma did meet the man of her dreams, Leonel. However, after getting married and trying to naturally conceive for years, the couple found that starting a family would be more difficult than they expected.
Through a fertility specialist, she and Leonel decided to try in vitro fertilization (IVF), a series of procedures (called cycles) in which eggs are extracted and fertilized in a lab before being transferred as embryos into the uterus. Zulma’s implantation was successful, but five months into her pregnancy, she lost her baby boy.
That’s when her sister, Marisol Loya, stepped in. Marisol, who has three children of her own, offered to act as a surrogate for Zulma using an embryo from her first cycle of IVF.
“I was devastated after losing my son – I thought I would never be a mother. It broke my heart,” says Zulma. “But when Marisol offered to do this for me, it reawakened hope in my heart that I thought I had lost.”
Zulma researched fertility specialists with experience in surrogacy and chose to consult with Jane Frederick, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., who guided her through the process. After the proper screenings and legal measures, Marisol became pregnant with Zulma’s child. Once she passed the first trimester, Marisol began seeing Rachael Lopez, M.D., OB/GYN with MemorialCare Medical Group.
“It warms my heart to help my sister have a family,” says Marisol. “Zulma was with me at every ultrasound appointment watching her little one grow. It was a beautiful experience for us.”
