(direct object pronouns)

¿Qué es un objeto directo?

• A direct object pronoun replaces the Direct Object in a sentence.

• A Direct Object answers the question:

WHAT IS GETTING “VERBED” ?

EX: She throws a snowball to the clown.

Can you find the direct object?

That’s correct! It’s the snowball! The snowball is being thrown.

Replace it with a pronoun.

• Direct Object pronouns replace D.O.’s.

• What could you replace snowball with if you didn’t want to keep saying it?

• She throws it to the clown.

• “It” replaced the snowball. That’s a D.O.P.!

• (by the way, the clown is the indirect object pronoun, that’s another lesson)

What would you use to replace the snowball?

• Choosing the D.O.P isn’t hard. But where it goes is a little trickier.

• In English we put it in the same place as the direct object, but not in Spanish.

• Ella la lanza al payaso.

• In a sentence with only one verb, the pronoun moves in front of the verb!

• This is hard for us to think about. (She it throws to the clown)

Uno más… Find the direct object and replace it with a pronoun

• Eduardo pone las alcachofas en su pizza.

• Eduardo pone las alcachofas en su pizza.

• Eduardo las pone en su pizza.

Practica. Identifica el objeto directo en la

frase. Decide en el pronombre correcto.

• Ellos venden el coche a Señor Sanchez.

“A” Personal…

• Did you notice the “a” in front of people?

• In Spanish, when people are direct objects, they require a personal “a”.

• Pets are people too! If your dog/cat has a name, they get a personal “a”!

D.O.P.’s with verb pairs

• When you have 2 verbs together in a sentence (verb pair, present progressive) you have choices where to put the pronoun.

• It can go before the first verb.

Yo los necesito comprar. (los zapatos)

• It can go on the end of the 2nd verb.

Yo necesito comprarlos.

Replace the direct object w/ a pronoun

• Yo voy a comprar un perro caliente en Home Depot.

• Quiero comer dos perros calientes.

• Necesito poner la mostaza en el perro caliente.

D.O.P’s with verb pairs• Its always ok to put the

pronoun before the first verb.

• Its also okay to smash it on the end of the 2nd verb.

• Its NEVER ok to put the pronoun between 2 verbs!

• Verbs love each other, don’t break them up!

D.O.P.’s with gerunds

• Gerunds (-ando, -iendo, -yendo) verbs work like verb pairs.

• Pronoun can go before 1st verb:

Nosotros las estamos estudiando. (palabras)

Nosotros estamos estudiándolas.

Did you notice the accent in the 2nd example?

LOS ACCENTOS!

• The accent is necessary because you added a syllable to the word.

• The accent tells the reader where to keep the stress on the original word.

• Its like marking your golf ball place with a penny on the green!

• Always go back to the original word in order to find the accent.

D.O.P’s with positive commands

• When using pronouns with a positive order, it gets attached to the end of the verb.

• Like gerunds, you may need to add an accent to the original order to preserve stress.

• If the original order was only one syllable, you won’t need an accent. (pon,di,haz,etc)

Practica con mandatos…replace the direct

object with a pronoun. Add it to the order.

D.O.P.’s with negative commands…

• Rules for pronouns with negative orders are different.

• Always put the pronoun right before the verb.

EX: No lo hagas. No me digas.

• You won’t need to add accents here, since you aren’t adding syllables.

Practica: Replace the direct object with a pronoun, put it before the verb.

• No mires la televisión.• No uses el teléfono.• No toques los vasos.• No hagas ruido.• No rompas la lámpara• No compres los tacos• No escuches el radio• No pidas la comida.

DOP’s in questions:• These can be tricky for English speakers,

bc we aren’t used to seeing pronoun start a sentence.

• Look at this question. What do you think it says?

¿Me encuentras en la biblioteca?

• Who is meeting? Who is being met?

• How would you answer it in Spanish?

• Sí, te encuentro. ( I will meet you)

Helpful hints:

• If the question uses “TE” answer with “ME”

• If the question uses “ME” answer with “TE”

• If the question uses “NOS” answer with “OS” or “LOS”

• If the question uses “LO,LA,LOS,LAS” keep it the same in your answer.

EX: ¿Me llamas? Te llamo.

EX: ¿Nos ves? Os/Los veo

EX: ¿Las compras? Las compro
