Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome

The Lotto NRFL returns to a full schedule of games this weekend after the interludes of the Division One and Two teams in the ASB Chatham Cup. The NRFL sides experienced contrasting fortunes in the cup, with some returning to league action in great spirits after keeping their hopes of glory alive and others wanting to bounce back after a weekend to forget. A clear leader has now emerged in each men’s division with defending champions Glen-field Rovers on course to retain their crown in the Premier League, North Shore United in dominant form in Division One and Manukau City continuing to make light of their freshly-promoted status in Division Two. All still have a fight on their hands, however, as there are many sides snapping at their heels. It’s even tighter in the Women’s Premier with Three Kings United and Claudelands Rovers sharing top spot, while Western Springs and Forrest Hill-Milford United are both just three points behind. This weekend’s action will therefore have great relevance as there could be some significant change at the top by Sunday evening. In the programme this week, we preview Round 10 of the Premier League, Round 9 of Divisions One and Two, and Round 8 of the Women’s Premier, as well as featuring photos from Phototek of several recent matches. In the spotlight were Central United’s 2-1 home win over Onehunga Sports in the Premier League, Manukau City’s 4-2 triumph at Onehunga-Mangere United in Division Two and Lynn-Avon United’s 1-0 success at Papatoetoe in the Women’s Premier. As always, we also have all the up-to-date league tables, graphs, golden boot charts and squads so there is a wealth of info at your fingertips!

Our Lotto NRFL social media platforms continue to be the place to go for all score updates, results, goal details and other news – be sure to tag us @LottoNRFL with you updates from the sideline!

Good luck for your game!

50 Years of Local Pride

Programme 2015

East Coast Bays vs Three Kings United

Bay City Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox, Assistant Referees: Rajesh Kumar, Tony Wall

Three Kings will be in great spirits going into this one after becoming the first team to defeat Hamilton and the league table would suggest their winning spell should extend to a third straight game here, especially with Allan Pearce leading the goal charts. Bays did well to pick up a point at Birkenhead though so also have reason to feel confident.

Central United vs Waitakere City Freyberg Field | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Cory Mills, Assistant Referees: Ravinesh Kumar, Pat Barrett

If the form book is followed then the hosts should have no problem in securing the points as Waitakere are on a horror run, the latest chapter of which was written with a 5-0 defeat to Glenfield. The home side have the worst defensive record in the top six though so there should be goals either way with Central’s Regi Murati and Vincent Pineau the most likely culprits.

Glenfield Rovers vs Birkenhead United McFetridge Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Matt Conger, Assistant Referees: Simon Lount, Tavita Makasini

This northern derby brings together the champions and runners-up from the previous campaign with both looking likely to be in title contention again. After Hamilton’s hiccup last weekend, Glenfield are now the only unbeaten team and will not be entertaining thoughts of giving that up at the hands of their local rivals, who will be seeking a return to winning ways after the draw with Bays.

Hamilton Wanderers vs Eastern Suburbs

Porritt Stadium | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Nick Waldron, Assistant Referees: Carl Watkins, Steve Bland

After Suburbs’ bright start, this is likely to be a more evenly-fought encounter than anticipated prior to season kick off. It will be interesting to see how Wanderers respond to their first loss but they have reason to be wary of a Suburbs team fresh from a 7-1 thumping of Bay Olympic and with 10-goal Nathaniel Bowen in the ranks.

Onehunga Sports vs Bay Olympic

Waikaraka Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Wolken, Assistant Referees: Glen Lochrie, Ben Hill

Both these teams have spent the week with their tails between their legs after falling to humbling defeats. Sports suffered the ignominy of becoming the first side to lose to Western Springs while something went majorly wrong for the Bay in their 7-1 defeat at Suburbs. Onehunga have a solid defence but could do with a few more goals as only Caleb Rufer has scored more than twice.

Western Springs vs Melville United

Seddon Fields | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 5pm | Referee: Martin Neale, Assistant Referees: Steve Merriman, Paul Mason

Youthful Springs will be on cloud nine after finally proving they can win at this level and are odds on to make it two victories on the trot in facing the division’s cellar dwellers. But Melville will likewise see this as a good opportunity to kick start their season. They must wish they still had former striker Steven Holloway to call on as goalscoring has been a real issue with only four notched so far.

Claudelands Rovers vs Eastern Suburbs

Galloway Park | Sunday 17 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Anna-Marie Keighley, Assistant Referees: Sarah Walker, Nadia Browning

Claudelands will be itching to get on the field again after sitting out last weekend, especially as title rivals Three Kings picked up another win while they were inactive. Those two are tied at the top of the table so every point will be crucial over the coming weeks and games like this against mid-table opposition are simply must-wins for Claudelands.

Norwest United vs Forrest Hill-Milford United Huapai Reserve | Sunday 17 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Neil Tobin, Assistant Referees: Allan Tobin, Dave Doidge

Newly-promoted Norwest were tipped to struggle with the step up in standard so it is no surprise to see them near the foot of the table. But they do have a win to their name and have competed well in most games so have reason to be proud of their efforts so far. They will be pushed to the limit by the defending champions though and have not dealt well with the leading sides in other encounters so the omens are not good.

Three Kings United vs Western Springs Keith Hay Park | Sunday 17 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: James Ashford, Assistant Referees: Kieran Withers, Reza Al Rebea

This is undoubtedly the one to watch in the women’s action as Three Kings are in pole position on the table while Springs are just three points away from catching them. With Three Kings’ lead under threat, there is therefore much on the line here, particularly as fellow contenders Forrest Hill and Claudelands are favoured to win elsewhere.

Lynn-Avon United vs Fencibles United

Ken Maunder Park | Sunday 17 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Aiden Moffatt, Assistant Referees: Salman Ali, Greg Woo

A recent injection of Football Ferns quality in Rosie White and Betsy Hassett hasn’t been enough to pull Fencibles away from danger and they go into this clash in great need of all three points. With Norwest playing reigning champions Forrest Hill, the door appears wide open for Fencibles to lift themselves off the bottom and coach Angela Wallbank will be keen to get that point across to her charges.

Papatoetoe vs Glenfield Rovers

Murdoch Park | Sunday 17 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Wendy McNeely, Assistant Referees: Hilary Osborne, Johanna O’Connor

After losing just three times last year on their way to runners-up, Glenfield will be disappointed to have reached that number of defeats already and need a lengthy run of wins to put themselves back in title contention. They will be without defensive lynchpin Bridgette Armstrong but welcome back Stephanie Skilton and Rebecca Burrows from the US college system so should have too much class for a Papatoetoe side that has posted just two wins.

Programme 2015

Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Hibiscus Coast

Becroft Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Fisher Assistant Referees: Kevin Turnock, Aiden Moffatt

These two northern clubs both have their sights firmly set on the Premier League and have backed up those ambitions by putting themselves in the promotion hunt early on. Double success is also still technically on for both after each navigated the first round of the Chatham Cup, Forrest Hill doing so in style with a 10-0 mauling of Kerikeri. That sort of scoreline won’t be repeated here against a side just one point behind them.

Ngaruawahia United vs Mt Albert-Ponsonby Centennial Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: John McCoskrie, Assistant Referees: Hubert Bakx, Dominic Hopkirk

Mt Albert will not fancy another trip to Ngaruawahia any time soon as they were forced to make the exact same journey just days ago in the cup. Then again, they recorded a 5-2 win on that occasion so if they can repeat the trick here coach Nick Snedden would happily head south each weekend. These are now desperate times for Ngaruawahia with only one point on the board so far.

Manurewa vs Mangere United Memorial Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor, Assistant Referees: Greg Woo, Mark Fleming

This southern derby will have even more bite than normal as Manurewa are facing a fight for their Division One lives and need to bring about a change of form quickly. Their early exit from the cup may be a blessing in disguise in this regard as they need to focus all their attentions on the league. Success in this match may rely on their ability to contain Mangere’s lethal pairing of Ernesto Lopez and Iwa Shaker.

Takapuna vs North Shore United

Taharoto Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Allan Wilson, Assistant Referees: Martin Huang, Chris Casey

It’s a big weekend for derbies in Division One with this northern encounter making it three. Both teams are coming off victories in the cup but anything other than a Shore win would be deemed an upset as Paul Temple’s charges are setting the benchmark at the moment. Impressively, they have conceded just five times so golden boot contender Tommy Miller will find it hard to break through.

Metro vs Tauranga City United

Phyllis Street | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 3pm | Referee: James Ashford, Assistant Referees: John Bennett, Dimitry Sabitov

Having been the early season pace-setters, Tauranga now find themselves looking to stay on the coat tails of North Shore and, given the form of the northerners, will not be able to afford many slip ups if they are to claim the title. Metro are not in great form though after going three games in the league without a win and then being turfed out of the cup.

Ellerslie vs Waiuku

Michaels Ave | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 6pm | Referee: Hayden Tutbury, Assistant Referees: Jeremy Ferguson, Chris Scott

This will be a late night for the Waiuku players and they will want to make sure it’s worth it with a good performance. Having lost only three of their eight games, there is no doubt they are capable of testing Ellerslie but Luke Chapman will need more support up front as he has scored nearly a third of his side’s goals. Ellerslie have been on the losing end just once so will expect to win this.

Lotto NRFL Division 1 Preview Round 9

Onehunga-Mangere United vs Lynn-Avon United

Mangere Domain | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andy Holdsworth,

Assistant Referees: Trevor Middleton, Eric Yu

This battle of the bottom is of huge importance to both sides but particularly for Lynn-Avon, who appear doomed to drop out of the NRFL unless they can put a great escape into action. With the season nearing the halfway point, this weekend would be an opportune time for that to begin and Onehunga-Mangere would seem the ideal opposition as they are in closest reach on the ladder.

Oratia United vs Albany United Parrs Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andrew Lamberth, Assistant Referees: Wandyk Freitas, Rene Vaughan

Both these sides kept themselves in the cup with wins last weekend and are in good goalscoring form, Albany hitting five in their triumph while Oratia stuck three. Finding the net so freely was of greater relevance to Albany as they have struggled to do so in the league, scoring just five times so far. Oratia have had no such problems but would have found the going much tougher without Mark Withers, who has accounted for half of their tally.

Fencibles United vs Papakura City

Riverhills Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens, Assistant Referees: Morgan Breuer, Kristian Klette

This is probably the most eye-catching fixture of the Division Two schedule this weekend as these sides are both in the promotion hunt and are among the top scorers in the league. Neither are in the habit of drawing – Fencibles are yet to tie while Papakura have done so just once – so there is likely to be a definitive result here. Form so far would suggest the sides are evenly matched though so a winner is difficult to pick.

Te Atatu vs North Force

Te Atatu Peninsula Park | Saturday 16 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Avnit Maharaj, Assistant Referees: Wendy McNeely, Charlie Tseng

After taking six matches to claim their first win, Te Atatu appear to have now really found their feet at this level and are unbeaten in four league games, including a 7-2 thumping of Onehunga-Mangere. They were unceremoniously dumped out of the cup last weekend with a 4-1 loss to Claudelands though so will feel the need to bounce back on Saturday.

Manukau City vs Claudelands Rovers

Walter Massey Park | Sunday 17 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Khalid El Gana, Assistant Referees: Anthony Barnes, Robin Van Niekerk

Manukau’s season continued to go from strength-to-strength with a win in the cup and the leaders now have such momentum that it will take something quite special to stop them. On league form, Claudelands would not appear capable of that but they are coming off a cup win of their own and will feel they can at least pinch a point, particularly if they can contain seven-goal Josh Karika.

AFC Fury vs Papatoetoe

Maramatanga Park | Sunday 17 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Paul Shakes, Assistant Referees: Andrew Lamberth, William White

Fury have posted some pleasing results recently, including a very impressive away win over early leaders North Force. Papatoetoe are just a point behind though so this is shaping up as a closely-fought contest. Papatoetoe suffered the embarrassment of being knocked out of the cup by non-NRFL opposition in South Auckland Rangers and will want to prove they have more quality than that suggests.
