From east to west

These days, most of the things deemed ‘cool’ seem to originate from the west. Whether it’s music, film, art or literature, we are

bombarded with countless mediums that advertise western culture. Is it because the west just has more ‘creativity’, when it comes to various art forms?

The answer to that rhetorical question is that the west not only chose to celebrate whatever art forms it had, but also saw the vast commercial possibilities in promoting and encouraging all forms of creativity. The irony of it all is that creative art forms require inspiration which is usually derived from a variety of cultures and the so called ‘west’ which leads the global popular culture movement today has the least amount of heritage and history when compared to some of the Asian civilizations. The idea behind making something ‘cool’ always involves a reincarnation of something that has long been forgotten in our history books and memories.

‘Cool’ is when someone manages to strike that pivotal balance by revamping something vintage with a current appeal. I have to give the west credit for creating an atmosphere that celebrates every possible kind of experimentation and is free from any social or cultural boundaries when it comes to expressing any of the above art forms. They have no hang-ups or insecurities about protecting their history or culture and are able to creatively fuse their modern ideologies with foreign influences.

The notion of not being insecure about your rich cultural heritage is a lesson in itself, especially one that we in Pakistan so desperately need to learn. No one can debate on how rich our land is in terms of history and ancient civilizations which means an endless amount of inspiration for all our creative art forms. In my opinion the problem is our insecurity in our identity and our constant efforts to only push a very ethnic, historical side of Pakistan to the global community. I believe that the best way to make a culture

or heritage get noticed is to make it ‘cool’ and that only happens with a creative fusion of east and the west. Consequently all our efforts are deemed just costume galas, ‘period pieces’ and history lessons to the outside world.

I still remember how the sub-continent and everything about it became ‘cool’ as soon as Madonna came out with the video for her first single ‘Frozen’ from her Ray of Light album as the millennium approached. Suddenly Gap was selling ‘kurtees’ or as they called it tunics and henna tattooing was the new thing for young girls. It was an extremely modern song with a new electronic kind of beat paired with a very ethnic kind of styling. That balance proved to hit the right note for India and they milked that cultural reference to the fullest. I leave you with fresh pictures straight off the ramp from the spring summer 2012 collections of New York Fashion Week. Behold, the Olsen twins (remember Full House in the 80s?) have just reinvented the ‘Trouser–Kameez combo’ for all of us to see and think once more; ‘Now, why didn’t I think of that’? I feel if I can actually influence and instill even an iota of positivity that will be a huge difference

Q: How much has it helped being the daughter of a famous media celebrity?A: My mother actually held me back as she wanted me to focus on education and to live a normal, healthy childhood. I was always interested in media and arts and that led me to my first appearance on television as an actress. My parents have been my backbone throughout my life.

Q: What has been the landmark in your life so far?A: My best achievement is yet to come as I feel there is a lot more to do. My first Indo-Pak movie experience was indeed magical. After doing ‘Virsa’ my life changed tenfold.

Q: Can you shed some light on your current projects?A: Drama serial ‘Mastaana Mahi’ is currently on air. I am also working on a project for Geo Television that is being filmed in Lahore and London. Shooting for a serial for ARY Network is also starting from this month.

Q: Are you frustrated that you are still not credited enough with so many projects under your belt?A: Whatever you pursue in life, you are bound to face challenges and obstacles along the way. A lot of criticism came in my way, but I have amended myself and have become content instead of letting the negativity get to me. I have decided to stay positive.

Q: Have you been able to achieve what you set out to do in the media Industry?A: I feel that my work is part of a much bigger goal which is to inspire the women of Pakistan and bring about a positive change where they feel they too can achieve what they aspire to do. It is all for a motive and I hope I do justice to it. This is also why I have recently associated myself with Capri, to take the message of achieving your dreams to more women.

Q: So are you a better actress, model or an anchor?A: For me everything has its own high and if I do something it is because I enjoy it. I wouldn’t do something if I didn’t love it myself.

Q: Recount your experience of working under an Indo-Pak banner?A: It was a magical experience and just the mention of the movie brings a smile on my face. Through ‘Virsa’ I was recognized as an international artist; it gave me an opportunity to learn. I’m proud of this movie as it was the first international Indo-Pak film.

Q: You have just been chosen as the face of ‘Capri’: how do you convey your experience?A: It feels beautiful to be able to take the message of hope and inspiration to others. Through my story, I want other women to find the confidence in themselves to remove the hurdles in the path of their dreams and Capri has given me this platform to make it happen.

Q: Any relative influences from the field?A: Audrey Hepburn.

Q: What is your responsibility towards the generation of today as a media personality?A: I feel if I can actually influence and instill even an iota of positivity that will be a huge difference. I faced many challenges in my career but I overcame them with courage and confidence and this is the spirit that I need to spread. We are living in tough times and we all need to stand up and face them by looking at the storm in the eye.

Weekly International Trend guide, spring / summer 2011

From the catwalks of Paris to the Fashion Houses of Milan, walking the streets of New York to the boutique lanes of London, Fatima Khan, fashion stylist, designer, graduate of NCA and The London School of Fashion is a self proclaimed Fashionista. Her unique aesthetic sense coupled with her experience as a fashion buyer/merchandiser for various Fashion Houses in London has helped to launch herself as a fashion connoisseur par excellence. Meet her every Sunday and learn what’s hot on the high streets in the global fashion village as well as the season’s must-haves and how to wear them.

Fashionista Fatima

RunwayThis season’s catwalks have given us plenty of material to indulge our wilder shopping urges: eye boggling patterns from Prada, Giles, comic-strip inspired graphics at Holly Fulton and lampshade shaped skirts at Mary Katrantzou. Prada, Giles, Holly Fulton, Mary Katrantzou, JC DE Castelbajac were the pioneers of this trend this season. The novelty abstract graphics, cartoonish prints and biting embellishments that form the backbone of this look becomes infinitely more wearable when paired with a simple silhouette, with slouchy knits, shift dresses and miniskirts countering the surrealism of Disney characters, cutesy animals, bold graphics and slogan motifs. Satirical accessories prove the perfect finishing touch to this unconventional look, with the much-lauded Louis Vuitton giraffe shoes and Prada’s banana earrings rating the most covetable.

For my PakistanIt’s quite a brave look, but really on trend, from citrus-decorated dresses at Stella McCartney to monkey-adorned tops at Prada. I am bringing you three stylish ways to try out these fun-loving prints. Whether you’re itching to channel a ‘60s vibe, looking for a school-girl-inspired look, or ready to go from runway to real way, I have all the trend tips and tricks you need to build an outfit from a novelty print! These prints can be worn together, in a similar style to colour blocking. The best way of layering is to layer up a subtle print on the bottom half and go bold on top. Be careful to mix it with the right pieces. I suggest neutrals, if the print is really loud or a bright solid colour, if the print has a black base. Adding in a banana earrings or monkey ring only sets the look apart even more! If it does not tickle your fancy, opt for simple bright novelty accessories.

Kaleidoscopic Abstract Prints - maxi dresses are hot for the season. Kaleidoscopic abstract prints are all over the new season’s collections, perfect to wear for the rest of summer and even better next season. Japanese street-style, ‘80s excess and British eccentricity is SS11’s novelty trend and it is the exuberant offshoot of maximalism. In these prints usually the intense vivid colour flows into itself creating inkblot shapes and have an air of spontaneity in the decorativeness of the splashy prints. The designs are so gorgeous, that any artist would be thrilled to have painted some of the fabrics used on runways. The prints are staking their claim in every woman’s capsule wardrobe. Whether it’s a pretty ditsy print, symmetrical brights or a bold graphic novelty print, make sure you check out our selection and invest in a piece for your transeasonal wardrobe.

Film

Despite Imran Khan’s tireless endeavours and Katrina Kaif’s tiring short skirts, the only bright sparks in the movie concur with Ali Zafar’s presence on screen – coincidence? Ali Zafar is criminally under-used in a film which is a mishmash of

contradictions, loopholes and predictability Gone are the days of sacrificing your love for someone dear, a la Sangam and Saajan, this is the era of swooping for your brother’s dulhan – paradoxically, whom you have hand-picked for him yourself. In Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, director Ali Abbas Zafar endeavours to recreate the typical shaadi and baaja-baaraat aura, associated with the Yash-Raj banner, under the backdrop of the contradicting ‘values’ of Generation Z. The plot is self-explanatory really. Luv (Ali Zafar) asks younger brother Kush (Imran Khan) to find him a bride, following an unceremonious breakup with his girlfriend Piali (Tara D’Souza) in London. After scores of frustration, Kush stumbles across the perfect Rishta, only to find out that the girl in question is Dimple Dixit (Katrina Kaif) – a ‘rebel gal’ with a forged rock-star persona, a poor man’s Avril Lavigne if you will. The two have had a brief acquaintance in the past. Dimple has changed, and wants to settle down. The two families bond effortlessly and Luv himself falls head-over-heels for Dimple, following a video chat. All is well till Kush and Dimple decipher the million-dollar puzzle that the two are in fact in love with each other. The ever so obvious revelation comes on the night Dimple has been engaged to Luv. The remainder of the film is spent unraveling

t h e humdrum, as the two plan to drag

themselves out of the conundrum. The film is crammed with contradictions and confusion. On one hand Kush lectures Dimple about Indian ‘values’ and ‘traditions’ in their initial rendezvous at a camping trip, on the other hand, for a couple of nights before her engagement, he takes his would be Bhabi out for drunken head partying. The amount of time the devar and bhabi manage to spend alone in the lead up to the wedding is astonishingly bizarre. Even if one were to ignore the ridiculous loopholes in the script, the fact that it centres around the very mediocre acting talents of Katrina Kaif is the mother of all cinematic suicides. Every time she toils to deliver a dialogue in Hindi, one has a flashback of Captain Russell’s legendary ‘do guna lagaan’ dialogues. But to be fair to Paul Blackthorne, he has a better chance of depicting a native Indian than Katrina Kaif will have in a million lifetimes. While the pseudo Hindi lingua franca is unfortunately a common thing, the appalling acting of the duo in lead is the inexcusable final nail in the coffin. Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan can’t act even if their lives depended on it. Amidst the over-hyped pair Ali Zafar delivers a sterling performance. Even in limited screen-time Ali reduces Katrina and Imran into toddlers of Film Acting. His comic timing is impeccable and plays his role masterfully - not enough of a fake British accent for a Londoner though. And, the fact that despite Imran’s tireless struggles and Katrina’s tiring short skirts, the only bright sparks in the movie concur with Ali’s presence on screen – coincidence?

Ali Zafar is destined to make a huge mark in Bollywood. For, not only does he have the

camera friendly looks, he can also act. Add his musical prowess into the mix and we have a striking package. The soundtrack of the film is one of its brighter aspects, which has been backed by fine picturisation. The comic moments are

entertaining, but sporadic. Clearly the comedy overshadows the abnormal romance.

Not only does the film make a mockery of the arranged marriage institution, it has the

audacity to veil it in a ridiculous shroud of the inevitability of love.

If you can bear two substandard actors portraying the blooming love affair between would be brother-in-law and sister-in-law

then go for it. I, for one, am too old school for that.

As other famous bands self decapitate in the name of ‘musical progression’, here we have Fred Durst and co giving us another smack of real McCoy Limp Bizkit. Fred’s 40 now, but the inverted cap is still there, and so is the “attitude” that it has always represented. For some, ‘evolution’ is just another word they have to look up in the dictionary – in Bizkit’s case, as showcased by the album, musical steadfastness actually does them a world of good.

Introbra is the calm before the storm, so to speak. However its darker feel supersedes the upbeat forewords of ‘Significant Other’ and ‘Chocolate Starfish’. Bring It Back is built around a shrieking riff and John Otto’s driving electronic beat. Durst’s lyrics are the usual brag-fest, and the track even manages to squeeze in a word about metal icons ‘Slayer’ and how Bizkit are “still raining blood in the club like Slayer.”Gold Cobra exhibits the Bizkit sway and how! An archetypal Borland riff, with all its funky innovations forms the spine of the rhythm. Durst rhymes, hip-hops and creates

a catchy chorus that will continue to ring in your ear for a while. Shark Attack is emblematic Limp Bizkit. It has the swagger of the 90s and is distinctively reminiscent of ‘Significant Other’ and its illustrious compositions. The track kicks off with the words, “another one of those days” (a shout out to ‘Break Stuff’) and even manages to strut around the classic’s rhythm. Get A Life keeps the momentum alive and even manages to take it up a notch. The chorus is dark and heavy with screamed vocals and some serious distortion. A trademark Borland solo is majestically entwined in the middle, such that it merges perfectly into the heavy chorus. Shotgun is another belter. Limp Bizkit go down

the conventional route in this one - Durst with his uncharacteristically inhibited vocals and Borland with his “Old School” solo. Douche Bag’s riff will remind nu-metal eggheads of Korn’s ADIDAS but Otto keeps the tempo up. Although the outro is a bit out of place, the track’s live version is destined to be a blockbuster! Walking Away is calm and tranquil, just the track you want to bring your breath back after the early onslaught. The solo work is striking, and the song works perfectly with “loser” as a bridge linking the album together. You’ll think you’ve played the wrong track, when Loser starts up - the intro is uncannily similar to the cult

hit “My Way”, and rhymes built around a patterned musical spine is comparable to another old hit “Rearranged”. The composition successfully builds upon the mellowness of the previous track. Autotunage is one of the lowlights – an intimidating drum into leads into a patched up assortment of rhythms that never actually comes together. The thrash intro of 90.2.10 will take you back into the 80s, and San Francisco’s Bay Area. The rest of the track grooves up nicely as we move into the tail-end of the album. Why Try initiates the vintage Bizkit sending-off as Borland stars in mini anthology of explosive riffs. This one’s going to be greeted by head-banging hordes at concerts, with serious satisfaction. Killer In You is another paradigm of Borland’s ingenious guitar-work. The final track is definitely one of the highlights of the album, and the magnificently woven riffs round off a smashing album in style. Every Bizkit release runs the whole gamut of reviews. Basically it depends on one’s taste for the genre that the band serve up. If you’re a fan of drop D tuning and confrontational lyrics, the album is a leaf out the good old 90s – the halcyon days of nu-metal. For others; if you have lactose intolerance, even the most scrumptious ice-cream wouldn’t tempt your taste buds.

Durst rhymes, hip-hops and creates a catchy chorus that will continue to ring in your ear for a while. Shark Attack is

Ingredients

4 leeks, washed, trimmed and finely sliceda small bunch of fresh thyme, leaves picked2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely choppedolive oila knob of buttera wineglass of white wine500g/1lb 2oz good-quality tinned or jarred butter beans, drained and rinseda small handful of freshly picked parsley leaves, finely chopped1 tablespoon crème fraîchegood-quality peppery extra virgin olive oilsea salt and freshly ground black pepper4 x 200g/7oz well-marbled fillet steaks, preferably free-range or organic, 2.5–4cm/1–1½ inches thick1 lemon

Method:

This combination of medium-rare beef, with all its lovely resting juices, alongside creamy sweet white beans is a classic and an absolute must if you’ve never tried it before.

Sweat the leeks, thyme and garlic with a splash of olive oil and the butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan on low heat for 20 minutes until they are soft and sweet. Turn up the heat and add the beans and a splash of water, so that the beans are almost covered. Allow to simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes until the beans are lovely and creamy. Add the parsley, crème fraîche and a some extra virgin olive oil and taste for seasoning.

Heat a griddle pan until white-hot, season your steaks and pat with olive oil. Grill a 4cm/1½ inch thick steak for 2 to 3 minutes on each side for medium-rare. You can keep them on there for longer, turning as you go, until cooked to your liking. Remove from the grill on to a dish and rest for 5 minutes. Squeeze over some lemon juice and drizzle over some extra virgin olive oil. Carve the steaks into thick slices. Divide the creamy beans between your plates and place the steak on top, drizzling over some of the resting juices.
